For me Ketil's character is a great way to analyze those who've been even loosely exposed to the concepts brought forth by thinkers like Carl Jung or Friedrich Nietzsche. For anyone that even has a loose understanding of these two or things they wrote about, Ketil's character is so so so easy to read. He never did the work to "conquer" his shadow self or to become who he truly is at heart so he could control all the base impulses and instincts caked into our very being. Instead he is the inverse of this where he has ignored this battle, which every human ever has had to do for themselves and the result is that those base impulses and instincts rule him. I came to this realization back in episode 7, it was reinforced when Ketil was hit with the Canute issue to start and he started hiding in a barrel and it was 100% cemented here in this episode. He is now nothing but his raw destructive and morally corrupt impulses and instincts, which will likely not be all that useful and has already started making the situation worse than it already was.

Yes, we talk about shadow work a lot in reactions and stuff cause it’s often the main theme in a lot of anime. But usually there’s something like a nine-tailed-fox or some sort of literal manifestation of the shadow. And usually the characters that are being used to explore the integration of the shadow SUCCEED. This is an interesting case where they not only fail to integrate the shadow, but we also see the effects of failing to do so. You’re consumed by bitterness and resentment. A tyrant. And what’s more, there also isn’t some fantastical spiritual reflection of the shadow. Instead we have a realistic interpretation Canute is another good example of this, but we have the representation of the shadow in his father’s head, haunting him. His shadow is literally disintegrated, as he talks to it like it’s a separate thing.

As well he should have. Ketil treated Arnheid like a doll that has to listen to all his problems and that can't say 'no' when he wants to have sex with her. Ketil beats Arnheid because he views her as one more possession he's about to lose, not as an actual person. He says he trusted her but he's delusional if he thinks that their relationship was anything other than one between a slaver and his slave. She was forced to please him (which includes having to listen to him tell her all his problems) or else she might get punished. He saw her as his escape from everything bad in his life and she resigned herself to the idea that she might never be free again...until her husband came along and she was hopeful for a second that her life might change. Ketil deserves no sympathy. His situation now sucks, true, but that's no excuse for what he did.

Hes got that farmers strength tho. Hes a man who would thrive and be respectable in a peaceful world but thats not the world hes in. No person is a vilian in vinland. Its the culture of violence and slavery that is the villian. After being targeted and losing the only thing keeping him sane in an insane world, ketil is now acting the way Viking culture dictates he should act. Even "a good guy" like snake approved of ketils actions, he just wanted to make sure he knew what hes doing. But now ketil is treating slaves like property, using violence to satisfy pride, self destructively dragging his farm into a battle he cant possibly win. The only reason this is even happening is because canute needs to steal land so he can fund/supply his expansive military. I know a lot of people want to just boil it down to "ketil evil" and this is surley him at his worst, but hes still just a regular man. Most people are weak and not strong enough to stand up to viking society. This is just him finally acting the way hes been encouraged to the whole time. Decent people can get wrapped up in wicked things. I like chicken nuggets but do you know the level of suffering involved in factory meat production? Soceity is more powerful than any one man.

Beating up a woman, even if she's his slave, seems to make any man a villain, it's something that makes everything "black or white" very easy. I see few talk about the manipulative wife, who used the right words to convince the weakened husband, in a panic attack, to attack his slave, which she, the wife, hates so much. It seems clear to me that she intended for Ketil to overdo the beating and kill the poor slave. To put Ketil on the bad team only after this episode is to deny that he was already on the bad team from the beginning, and gained attention for being the least bit kind and avoiding the stereotyped villainous figure. Ketil is proud of himself treating his slaves much more generously and fairly than other masters, like Gardar’s, at that time. It's natural that he feels betrayed. His slaves are his property as Snake said. Arnheid would not have been treated the same way if she had not been purchased by Ketil and if she had been "lucky", if Gardar’s plan about obtaining iron had been successful, she might have been on the side of using slaves. Plus, there's no room in his mind for being "kind" anymore because he knows Canute is coming to take over his whole property.

It does not look like a situation where slaves can retaliate. In fact, the escape plan was put down by the guests. Snake seems very royal to his employer and he's a proud man so he won't betray Ketil. His attitude toward his “work” has been very consistent. Ketil used diplomacy and it worked well but there's no Harald anymore. Things have changed. Ketil needs to be "stubborn" to protect his property, to maintain order and discipline, not to cause chaos in his farm. His retainers and guests want it that way, too. Once the dignity of the master is lost, rebellion will occur. He's a soft man but he does what he is supposed to do to maintain peace anyway. You can do whatever you want to do to them and no one will condemn you for what you have done. It was the way it was. It doesn't matter if a master is kind, cruel or indifferent to his slaves. It's just lucky or unlucky as Sverkel said in the previous episode. Ketil may also become a slave in the future. I wanted to like Ketil with the way he was presented at the beginning as a kind master and I know he was losing it after finding out Canute was planning to send his armies after his farm, but the change in his character was almost too drastic to believe, I guess the takeaway is that he's just a piece of crap.

This started as a cathartic response to some comments. I feel this was necessary for me to write for all those who may be conflicted about their feelings on the situation, Ketil, Arnheid, etc. But I'll start with those few who genuinely believe Arnheid deserves what happened to her. Some believe she's responsible for "playing with a man's heart" Firstly, _what an absolute shittake to put on the shitcake that you then proceed to feast on, you complete and utter_ *gobshites* . Take a step back and take in the fact that he bought her because she most likely reminded him of the girl he lost. He then projects that same woman onto Arnheid for years while she has no right to refuse anything Ketil wants from her - the best that she could do was not having to pretend. The fact that she could be openly detached and distant just shows how delusional and self-obsessed he is. All this while he would rape her or air out all his baggage. She would then have to experience being openly abused by his wife (and probably insanely overworked because the bitch felt spiteful) and sexually harassed by Snake's men on the farm which he didn't do shit about. The only thing he did was to get Snake to tell his men that she was off-limits because of course he wouldn't want his 'darling' to be touched by another man - and I'd bet that even if one of them was somehow stupid enough to put a hand on her in the past, he probably wouldn't have had the balls to confront that man himself. He'd come crying to Snake instead and there's even a sad chance she would have been abused anyway because his delusion would be compromised by her "infidelity". I think it's even hinted in the first two episodes that Snake's men and the farmhands were sexually assaulting her anyway - either threatening her into silence after or testing the limits to see how much they could push Ketil before he'd do something about it. But there's no doubt he 100% saw and treated her as a slave while he was out with other people on the farm, giving her escorts on a cart, then probably caving in to his wife's demands for Arnheid with how little spine he had - remember, he can't risk afford to look weak! He's supposed to be the wealthy Norse man who's the patriarch of a big family. and a female bed slave is only supposed to be his fleshlight because otherwise it looks really bad on his marriage and honour. Reminder again that he RAPED her consistently and eventually got her pregnant, something she had no choice in if she didn't want to risk multiple beatings or death. Also, he didn't "trust" her with the truth about him. Naturally he sees himself as gifting her a fabulous rich life as his mistress because he's so "kind", but it's not trust in the slightest, it's still delusion. The only reason she's not violently raped like how your average Viking would do is because she's forced to play his old lover. She's either not made aware of his unresolved trauma or she is which is worse (if you think being treated as less than human is bad, I can tell you how mindfucked you become because of an identity forced on you). That and he needs her to be his enabler for all the self-pitying victimisation every night about how the whole world was against him, and how great he was to have built himself up. Again, classic narcissistic behaviour of keeping up a greater fake identity to control others as much as possible - that's literally why he's made the fake origin story and why he kissed ass to the kings of his land. He masks his insecurity as false kindness and makes Arnheid maintain that lie for his gratification. Now, people seem to have this wrong idea that he's a coward because as Lindsay said - he doesn't have anything going for him. Again, it's hard to see it if you don't know how a person with a personality disorder thinks - we see Ketil being frustrated and intimidated by Thorgil who became the equivalent of a Viking celebrity, but not because his son is crazy or sees fatally striking children as an honourable test, but because Thorgil is a potential threat to his stability and image, who doesn't care about anything but himself. I'd imagine he reminds him of the man who killed his first love, and he's afraid a man like Thorgil could decide to take his stuff again. Ketil wasn't afraid of what he could do to the kids, he feared what he'd do to him. And notice how Thorgil was the one propping up the myth about his dad? We've seen how perceptive Thorgil is, he surely knows Ketil is a fraud but he doesn't call it out because he uses his dad's reputation and money. Like father, like son. Others have also suggested that he's repulsed by violence/Norse culture. Ketil being against violence is also another lie he uses to mask his internalised anger - with the situation with the boy Sture, there were men and Thorgil watching and he tried to escape the responsibility of administering the punishment before needing to be bailed out by Pater. Pater had to enforce some measure of corporal punishment and Ketil like the pathetic person he is, overcompensates (he literally beats the kid half to death and on the face) because he was too scared of people, especially Thorgil, thinking he's weak. A weak man hiding behind the illusion of a strong, masculine figure. Sure, Ketil doesn't like to be violent to people on a good day, he doesn't like hitting kids. Is it because he thinks it's wrong? Nah! It's because it makes his servants unable to work for him and grow indebted to him. He wants to be on good terms with everyone - that said, not a bad thing for the people involved. If you think I'm wrong, let me remind you of what he said to himself before Pater stepped in to bail him out: _"Why did you have to steal from me? I have no choice but to punish you."_ Stop reading and think about that line - in case it isn't clear, he just went from seemingly empathising earlier with the kids because they had to take care of their sick mother alone, to shaming and blaming them for bothering him with something unpleasant that tests his image. Did he develop sudden amnesia when Snake spoke to him, or is it that he's more afraid of what his men may think than what will happen to these kids (when Snake or Thorgil get to them)? Would he have let Thorgil finish the beating if he didn't hit Sture as hard as a truck? Better yet, I wonder what punishment he would have given if Pater wasn't there to find the best option (I respect Pater, he made the best of his situation and takes the abuse of working under Ketil to bring some fairness and justice on the farm.). *There's nothing intricate/complicated at all about this situation.* Ketil has always felt *off* . I'm not sure how it wouldn't be proof enough here at the barn, without Thorgil encouraging him or Pater trying to stop him, his instinct is to beat a bound pregnant slave woman to death for attempting escape, and he would have killed her if Snake didn't intervene. But I also hear people saying that a lot happened to him, and he suffered a mental breakdown that anyone would have. Firstly, everything is directly or indirectly a consequence of his actions. Sverkel made this very clear. Ketil had chances to change and work on leveraging his wealth and power for ethical good, least of all with his dad trying to take responsibility for the death of Ketil's first love. He had every resource. Sure, he blames himself in part for not being strong enough to fight against the stronger clan in his past. But I'd also guess he unconsciously resented her and Arnheid for leaving him when he gave them everything. Someone this entitled, this unable to let go of people, with this amount of insecurity/pride can never truly love someone. And they'll always see themselves as victims, and the people they abuse as ungrateful monsters. _Breakdown my ass_ - this is exactly how covert narcissists operate. They fool you into thinking they're pleasant/charming people but they hide a cold ruthlessness and a void of empathy. Canute is similar in this regard. Even the family dynamics match - you have a covert narc dad with two narcissistic sons, one grandiose and treated like the golden child while the other...scapegoated for failing to meet expectations both as a Viking and his dad's heir. No wonder Ketil wanted another child more like him to take over the farm. I was also raised by someone like Ketil who treated me like an animal when I did something that didn't make her happy for whatever reason. But everyone in public thought she was the kindest and most attentive mother ever. Except only I knew how she talked about manoeuvring and controlling people in her life, and how much of a martyr she wanted to be. That and a whole lot more besides is why I got so triggered seeing people victim-blaming. How many husbands have to be killed, kids hanged and pregnant women beaten to death before people realise that maybe the people who deserve suffering aren't the slaves who lost their entire families and have no place to go or home to come back to?

The scene with Arnheid and Ketil. Like I forget when was the last time some scene in any anime made me this angry (my blood was legit boiling) and uncomfortable. This was hard to watch. The way it was directed, the sound design, the music and the voice acting by Arnheid and Ketil's voice actors made this scene tough to witness. And this was pretty realistic (as much I hate to say it) because actual slave owners in our world would in fact do horrible stuff like this. Poor Arnheid 😢. I feel absolutely horrible for her (specially after she lost Gardar in the previous episode). And Ketil (I do see why he turned out like this fragile man like him who can lose their minds when loads of bad stuff happen to them), he turned out to be one of the most horrible characters to ever exist. I hate him more then Mr Tucker from Fullmetal Alchemist BH and King Fritz from Attack on Titan (and we all know how horrible those two guys were so Ketil coming on this list is quite an achievement).

As someone with a similar profile you can analize shows better, understand author's intentions and deconstruct character's motivations and map out all the main plot and subplots going on. But for getting the little subtleties its the best. other reactors that i've seen they miserably fail to do so and they're always just confused or misunderstanding shit going on, especially the more nuanced and morally gray stuff.

Poor Ketil and Arnheid. . Arnheid's life is punished because of two bad decisions. 1. Gardar decides to fight for prosperity. 2. Arnheid decides to take the chance to escape with Gardar. If she had chosen Ketil and told him about the pregnancy, he probably would have fled with her to start over and she could have had a fresh start with her second child. . Ketil's life is completely turned upside down because of Canute's goal to create a utopia. He comes home, is haunted by death and is almost on the verge of a mental breakdown and seeks attention from the only person he trusts. His family is a mess. His first son a cold-blooded warrior, his second son a hopeless case and a cold wife (probably a political/arranged marriage) who could not give him any warmth in all these years. He then learns that his second love is trying to abandon him to flee with another man. This was the final stroke to turn him from a lifelong pacifist into the true "Iron Fist Ketil". After all these events, he makes the terrible decision to take out his anger on Arnheid. . What I would like to know is how this relationship started in the first place. Was it love at first sight for Ketil or did he slowly fall in love with her over time because she played the perfect obedient slave wife for him.
@solenstyle
Жыл бұрын
It's a one sided relationship. Ketil is really dumb if he thinks Arnheid would not do anything to be in the good graces of him. He has all the power, so anybody in Arnheid's position would do the same as her. If he doesn't realize the lack of choice in Arnheid's position, then he really is a deluded idiot. BTW, I also think your 2nd question is already answered. He had to have fallen in love with her at first sight because it's no coincidence that she being the pretty one is in that position in the first place.

Ketil is a good guy. You gotta understand those were different times. By no means is he pathetic. Of course, what he did is not morally right, but you gotta understand that this man was pushed to the brink of mental collapse. He care about 3 things: his family, his farm and his Arnheid. He is about to lose his farm because of Canute, his family might die in the fight for his farm and the fact that Arnheid tried to escape was the final straw. If you look at this objectivelly, nobody is right or wrong. The real piece of shit is Canute here. There is also a saying "beware of the wrath of the kind man".
