I understand some of the excitement I can feel for stuff like lego especially can be more easily understood and related to by kids and I love to talk to them about my special interests and I understand how difficult boundaries can be. It is heartbreaking to see someone with a level of developmental disability try to hard in an honest way to make friends and know exactly what she’s doing wrong but she’s so excited and happy to have a friend and spend time with him. She has no bad intentions just poor boundaries. If someone like her caretaker had instructed her better this would have never happened. Seeing this, it makes sense why her sister wont see her. It's likely down to a combination of factors: She already had a complicated relationship with "Crazy Eyes" from their childhood, their parents doted on her more, she was constantly overworked taking care of her, and the first time she took some time off, her sister unwittingly kidnapped a child which led to his death. I suspect there was quite a media circus, and likely lawsuits from the boy's grieving family. In tragedies like this, everyone around the killer gets blasted as well, friends, family, associates. She was likely blasted on the news and online, and that type of abuse leaves scars. All of those various factors: the guilt of the boy's death, being blamed by some for it, her name being dragged through the mud, the trial, her parents continuing to support Susan, had to take their toll. It makes sense that she'd want to cut off her sister completely. In her mind, Crazy Eyes likely symbolizes all the misery and suffering in her life.

I believe the fast transition from happy to scared was unbelievable but the fact he didnt notice her illness was completely realistic. Still the falling off thing was a bit over the top, no kid his age would not have an understanding of heights and their danger nor would they simply forget that danger in a moment of fear. Still this is a great take on mental illness.

When someone has the mentality of a child they shouldn't be held accountable for acting as such. She had no ill intent. And it seems people are familiar with her mental disabilities. So why would she be put in PRISON? I know it's a show, but this has always bothered me. If anything, she should have been placed with a more sufficient guardian that doesn't up and leave her by herself. Sure, she still needs to be independent but still. And then, she should have been put in a program that teaches her how to act responsibly and outline the things she just shouldn't do but may not realize.

America has a serious mental health crisis and an overpopulated prison system...
@dominicidejig

That's the entire point behind characters like Suzanne "Crazy Eyes" and Lolly. Their mental illnesses which may or may not have ended in someone else being hurt, has thrown them into a system that won't help them in any way. It's what happens everyday in the world. Rather than realizing the mental limits of sick people, they get thrown into general population prison rather than a good(!) mental health clinic.

Actually, people who are recognized with mental disabilities get leeway when it comes to minor crimes such as theft or causing minor injuries to pedestrians but murder (intentional or not) is punishable by prison time. But, unlike what happened in the series, Suzzane and Lolly should have been placed in a special cell or area where they can seek help by counsel or psychologists

To the people asking why she is in jail and not a mental asylum, I believe it’s because a child died. If it was just the kidnapping, they would understand that it’s not jail that she needs, but when a child dies because she technically kidnapped him, it’s a whole other situation. It’s usually a done deal when you are responsible for a child’s death.

I don't think that's the main reason the directors were going for this show. Whenever a crime like this happens in real life and the person who did the crime was white, there is always an immediate response from the media along the lines of: this person is suffering from mental illness, they were a loner, etc. They paint a backstory to help excuse the person to an extent. But when the person is black, regardless of how obvious it is that the person has mental disabilities, it doesn't matter. They are guilty, there is no backstory or excuse given. So more often than not, the black individual is jailed when they really needed help.

This was the saddest backstory to me; she wasn’t a criminal that deserved prison in any way. She was failed by some unfortunate set of circumstances. If the sister was going to leave her for a weekend, it was totally irresponsible of her to plant the idea of finding a friend in her head right before leaving, *knowing* she doesn’t have the mental skills to properly navigate that on her own!

Little random. But she played her part so good. This part makes me cry because she tried to help him, she also just wanted a friend. It also makes me sad because her sister says it'll be fine. Imagine coming home and being told that your sister brought home a little boy. Held him hostage. And then he ended up falling out the window. The parents too... that would be so hard. Honestly the sister and her fiancé are the main ppl to blame for this whole event. They knew her mental capacity and should have had someone regularly checking in on her when they left. After the court saw how mentally delayed she truly was something should have been done to lesson her sentence. It’s a terrible tragedy what happened to the boy and yes some justice needed to be served but I believe this whole thing was went about the wrong way and the book was just thrown at her and the key thrown away without a real look at the entire situation....Very sad.

That's so sad 😞 she misunderstood making friends. The poor child misunderstood her anger of him leaving, which was actually her fear of being alone. 💔

paola mercedes is she her sisters keeper???? If you watched the show you’d know that her family was very supportive and always tried to get help for her. The therapists thought it was best to let her grow up and do things on her own which is why she had a job.

Uzo is one of those actresses that is the epitome of storytelling. Through her facial expressions, gestures, tone of voice, the environmental space that I bet she’s aware of. This is beyond brilliant of an actor. And of course the writing to make it come alive as well.
