A while back I raised goats , and the coyotes would take my goats whenever they wanted one. One day a mule showed in my garden eating my okra plants. I put him in my pasture with the goats and located his owner. While he was visiting I noticed the coyotes and any other K9 that happened to come along would not stay around and my missing goat issue completely went away. That old mule would work those coyotes over ,I mean he would beat them like they owed him money. I located his owner and he let the old feller stay with me for a while and eventually told me if I wanted him I could have him . The owner had used him to plow his garden with. Like I said this was long ago . I had a couple of horses but never realized how smart a mule was . He could open gates ,but would not close them , and pretty much managed my pasture like he saw best . He never bothered my dogs or anything else that was there when he came . He stayed with me for about 8 or 9 years before he died of old age . I had gotten rid of all the goats and horses but let him stay around as long as he wanted .

A landowner behind us had a herd of goats and an old donkey that would follow the herd as they grazed. One evening, a pregnant goat gave birth right behind our house and even though the rest of the goats headed home, the donkey stood guard over the mama goat and her kid, until the baby goat was finally able to get up and walk home. My dad grew up in Jordan on a farm, as his family were farmers. Calling someone a donkey in Arabic is an insult, implying you're stupid, as it is in English. He always hated the insult and would always tell me how donkeys were smart, hard working, and protectors, and how everyone loves the majestic horses, but donkeys were more important to his farm than the horses even though they were cheaper, and if trained properly did everything horses did and more on the farm. He also told me about the time thieves came to steal their live stock while he was shepherding them alone as a young teen, and if it wasn't for his three donkeys he may have lost the live stock and maybe his life. He's now a civil engineer that can speak 13 languages. Taught me that when ignorant people insult you to simply ignore it, and maybe even take it as a compliment if they liken you to a donkey.

Every donkey owner knows donkeys are WAYYYYY smarter then horses. That’s why they’re so stubborn. You can work a horse to death but not a donkey. That’s why mules are stubborn. They’re smarter then horses and get their intelligence from their donkey parent. I grew up on a horse/donkey farm. My grandpa raised race horses and he raised donkeys for protecting livestock. He always like the donkeys more. He said to me the other day how all his donkeys are smarter then any old horse he ever owned and that horses were dumb and hard to train. He bragged how he didn’t even need to train his donkeys they were so smart they just KNEW right away what you wanted from them. He’s right too. My grandma and me have a donkey that we kept when he retired and sold his farm. (I’m the donkeys god mother lmao) He kept two little mini donkeys. A mother and son. Unfortunately the mom passed away at the age of 35 a few years ago and were looking to get the remaining donkey a mini mule friend soon.

Even a lion would be careful around a pack of hyenas. In a different video a lion just sat down with concrete block behind him and hyenas kept their distance since his back was protected. Bit of a standstill until another lion chased off the hyenas.

This is why my Papaw always kept a donkey or 2 with his cattle & horses. If you raise them from babies, they will do most anything you ask. One year we had a baby born in Spring & by late summer, I had him very tame. He'd follow me everywhere, even if I was just peacefully sitting by the pond. We were shucking some corn, as a family, in the back yard & he kept coming to the fence crying, so I asked to let him out to be with me. He ended up impressing everyone there as he'd just go person to person getting ear scratches. My Granny said, 'well, look at that, he's just like a lil dog or something' I, personally, LOVE donkeys & mules. I've grown up with them, so I had the great honor as a child for them to teach ME who they are...sweet, loving babies.

Breeds like Maremmas, Kangals, Sarplaninac, Great Pyrenees, and the like. Herding dogs do one job. They "guide and herd". They keep the animals together in a group.... Big difference. Donkeys even kill pesky pit bulls. We all hear them howling in pain as they die in our area. A neighbor keeps some animals on her small farm like chickens, guineas, rabbits, geese, 2 cats (which are mostly indoors), goats, 3 small dogs, and a bunch of donkeys. Another neighbor keeps (and sometimes breeds) pit bulls and lets them run free at all hours, day and night. Those pits have killed so many neighbors’ animals, even other dogs, regardless of how much they reinforce fences and try to keep them safe. These pits have even tried to chase down people and killed animals right in front of their owners. But on the property with the donkeys, they get stomped to hell and their throats bitten through. The pit bull guy doesn’t care. He just keeps buying more pits and let’s them break through peoples’ fences to kill their animals. We can hear the pits screaming loudly in pain when they tread on the donkeys’ turf, and no one tries to save them. The pit guy knows he can’t threaten anyone over his dead pit bulls because he knows half the property owners and farmers around would begin suing him, and he’d lose everything.

A few years ago we had 5 horses and would get coyotes in the field. One day someone offered us a donkey for free so i took it and put her with the horses. She was the sweetest thing and would bray whenever i came out of the house. I would also take her for walks down the road like a dog. Amongst the horses, she was kind of picked on but whenever coyotes came around, the horses ran away but she went after the coyotes and chased them away. One day a huge German Shepherd ran towards her barking and growling expecting her to run away but she just lowered her head, put her ears back and looked the big dog in the eyes and the dog literally turned tail and ran away. We also had to keep cats away from her

I had a lady with horses, there was a trailer park about a quarter mile down the road. Two pits came over and attacked her horses, seriously injuring two of them before she heard and ran them off. After going with animal control to get the dogs, and then writing the owner a particularly nasty ticket (that would make sure they had to pay the vet bill on the horses), I told the rancher that she should get a couple of donkeys as companion animals for her horses. Reason: Her most injured horse was bitten on the chest and shoulders pretty badly when he tried to intervene against the dogs attacking the mare. My cousin raises donkeys, and I told her that they had walloped the whole pack of coyotes (around here coyote packs get up to around 20) when the coyotes came through their pasture after a colt. She got a couple of donkeys......and we haven't been called out there for dog problems since.

I will agree with many of your points except on three points.... 1 - $200/yr for feeding and care? Unless you have great grass pastures that are green year round.... Try more like $150 avg per month per animal depending on location, health, etc. When we had 5, it ran us about $550 a month JUST IN FEED. Then add in farrier to trim hooves, Regular vet visits for shots and the occasional would cleanup and stitch. 2 - Donkeys & Mules don't need training to be guardians. If treated and cared for properly, their bond with their humans and "heard mates" is what will get a mule to protect. We had 1 mule that was with a small herd oif horses. Even though not under attack, she would go after Coyotes. She killed 2 that we saw ourselves. She even chased a squirrel out of the pasture. They just dont like strangers. A donkey or mule (half hosrse, half donkey), are the only Predatory Herbivores. They have a different way of thinking. Horses look at danger and think flight first, then fight if cornered. Donkeys and mules look at the situation and work out the options. Most of the time they will go on the offense before running. If they think they can win, they will pick the fight. But one area that they always come out on top... Just can't beat the cuteness of those long ears.

Was working 2nd shift at the Saturn plant in Spring Hill, TN a few years back. Always rode home in the dark. I was a bicycle commuter and my regular route went through a semi-rural area. One night I turned a corner on a twisting road that ran between 2 fields smack into a herd of donkeys. It was completely dark and there they were. About 40 of them. My headlight was really bright(1000 lumens). As I rode through the herd they quietly just moved out of my way. As I exited there was a sizeable hill I had to climb. They followed me for a good ways up the hill. The grass on either side of the road was pretty thick. One by one they broke off and started to munch on it. Not once did I feel any sense of menace. They were very calm and I got a feeling of curiosity and acceptance. Obviously, they heard me coming from a long way off. It was in late October, clear and about 40F. Amazing experience. Yeah the guy who wrote this is clearly not a farmer xD Not that donkeys aren't great guards for fixed pastures but a donkey doesn't work well for high altitude pasture for example, while a guard dog can do both. You aren't getting past the Patou, Great Pyrenees dogs, even as a human on a bike.... Which is great to keep the herds together and not lost / hurt / killed... And donkeys can't herd for shit especially when compared to herding dogs... Comparing them generally like that is just.... What I expect from a clickbait video on a shitty channel.

The difference between herding dogs and guardian dogs is obvious; but that doesn't take away from the fact that donkeys and mules are great at protecting herds in a pasture. There's no "herding" or "guardian" donkey/mule, that's just the way they are. They're naturally protective.

Donkeys are not stubborn, they self preserving. They dont do things that may harm them. Please only use mammoth or large standard donkeys to protect your herd. Mini donkeys used for protection are often injured or killed trying to protect the herd.

My cousin and his neighbors , purchased a donkey to watch their rescue horses . It worked like a charm . 😘 She had free range of both pastures . Such a love bug , too . Once a couple blue jays were harassing , a new mom and her foal . That donkey was whooping and hollering , like Satan himself was outside . The horses loved their donkey .

Our neighbor had 2 Great Pyrenees with his goats and a pack of coyote killed them. He got 1 donkey a day later and had 4 dead coyote the day after that and 3 more within the next 2 weeks. All had snapped necks and where pretty well stomped. Goat prices have been way up the last few years so the loss of just 3 goats will pay for a donkey.

@@badgimp4577 Great pyrinees are not good to protect lifestock. They scare only away. But attacks from wolves, bears...NO. Anatolian shepherts are better. But you need 3 of them at least. They heard allone sheeps for a few months totally left allone to their own devices with no humans around. They cut their ears away, when puppy, so wolves can not grasp the ears. They have broad neck collars with pins on it, to protect their throats from bites of wolves. They scare away bears too. This dogs are wonderfull, but they protect very good their homes and cattle, but are not accepting well strangers or other dogs in their territory, when they are not grown up with. No dogs for pets. Cities, or houses/appartments, without big gardens and lots of neighbours, people around. Better indeed a donkey.

Donkey's have been used as flock guardian animals for centuries. Look into Goliath Donkeys too. Another trick is to put one goose (ONLY ONE!) in with your chickens. Any more than one goose and they'll go off by themselves, but if it's only one, they are awesome.

This is hilarious! I've always said to everyone when donkeys get brought, "when do ever see a donkey being messed with?" Now we know why. Instead of calling them a Jack Ass, we should call them a Jack Yo Ass.
