So Ribble must be the reason why gravel bikes are the best. Who knew?

So I'm pretty sure the correct answer is if you can only have one bike a gravel bike is best if you have a nice mix of pavement and gravel roads, a mountain bike is best if you have lots of trails, a road bike is best if you have mainly nice rideable roads. It's cool you did an 10 minute ad for Ribble though

I'm not a one-bike kind of guy, but my interest in such a bike has been growing, especially for overnight bivouacking. I converted a hybrid bike into a drop-bar gravel bike, but it can't accept tires over 33mm, and not even that without some issues. That bike is fun to ride, but as a "graveler traveler" it's not a great success. I'm in the US, but Ribble has great, very customizable options, and I'm tempted.

I disagree, I had a Topstone carbon for 8 months then a Diverge carbon for 14 months, the bike I owned before these was a Sl5 Tarmac, whilst yes I enjoyed going off road as a MTB rider who rode through the 80's and 90's 100% off road and raced I know the down side of riding off road and you guys never ever mention! Wear and tear! Grit sand mud clay water etc etc dramatically wears out parts way way faster than road riding, I cleaned my bikes and often stripped parts down after every ride, but you can't avoid premature wear due to the environmental impacts of off road riding. Then there is the fact that even with road wheels and 28/30c tyres fitted to my Topstone or Diverge on the roads in the Spring summer and Autumn they both felt boring! Slow stable composed steering just feels boring! I jumped back on a TCR and it was so much more fun on the roads! And let's be honest we don't have many true gravel roads In the UK! I found riding a light weight 29er xc with rigid carbon forks way more fun and suitable for most UK trails. Get the right bike for the right conditions, not a bike that's a compromise in all conditions 🤷♂️
@Hintonbro.

I mean sure… you are saying 3/4/5 specific purpose bikes are better than one compromise bike. Not a surprise there.
@lovecycling193
Жыл бұрын
@@Hintonbro. no I'm saying gravel bikes can't do it all as well as these style vids make out, I know I tried it out for over a year, if you decide like I did to try selling say a MTB and Road bike to buy one ultimate do it all machine there's a good chance your end up disappointed, but also whilst riding off road is good fun it's also bloody expensive as parts wear out fast. And they honestly don't feel very exciting on the road. If I lived in Marin county Vs Dorset UK and had 1000's of kilometres of fast flowing hard pack gravel roads with some nice well established hard single track then I'm sure my Topstone or Diverge would of been fantastic bike's, but in the UK most off road rides suit mtb's far better, unless of course you have say the New forest or similar on your door step, with a good amount of fire roads, but even then having ridden that area and lots of places like the Purbecks quantocks and Dartmoor etc the size of the flint and poorly maintained trails are still a long way off the gravel trails these bikes and tyres are made for. So I now take my old 26er Stump jumper out on trails and have a road bike for roads so 2 bikes yes, but 3/4/5 bikes not needed by me, but lots of bikers l know have loads of bikes so winter bike, TT bike, Tri bike, road bike, CX bike, MTB xc, MTB Enduro, MTB downhill etc, the reason being even in MTB if you try and create a true all-round bike you just end up with a bike that limits what you can do in each situation. For me my gravel bike was a comfy good endurance and winter bike, that could handle mild off-road ok but lacked any fun on the road as its feed back was bland and dull. I feel that these vids just mislead people into a product that's not versatile as they make out.

They are. Some marketing guy somewhere had a eureka light bulb over the head moment and his restless mind had finally found a way to make more money from his product portfolio or range by selling the public another product they don't need. Its so obvious. And racing around off road on a road bike with fat tyres is not the done thing. If a modern mountain bike is too hard-core for mild off roading , tracks and bridleways etc then there are plenty of old generation hard tails for sale on ebay the will do the job far better for far less cost.

Interesting to see options here. I own the Gravel ALe (which is a 1 by) and have done quite a few miles on the bike now. However, I had to modify the gearing as I found the GRX gear ratio completely inadequate for off-road and hills with panniers. It just didn't go anywhere near low enough. I replaced the front cog with 36 tooth (wolf), and a rear cassette 11-48. This is in the right ball-park. The Ribble bike itself is great and feels really comfortable, I have even tackled very rough dartmoor tracks with the new gearing and all-said-and-done, this works really well.

I'm no fan of gravel / off-road riding, but I love gravel bikes, specifically the beautiful, versatile, fast and comfortable ones. My personal favourite is the Salsa Warbird (it ticks all the boxes), but I'd be interested to test the likes of Orbea Terra M -series 2021 and newer, the Merida Silex x000, the YT Industries Szepter, the Niner RLT 9 RDO and a few others, too. With slicks on tarmac, as I prefer do most of my riding. "Why then a gravel bike?", - since might ponder. Because of versatility and comfort that the regular road bike doesn't boast. Compatibility with proper mudguards, racks, more mounts, including a top tube one, compatibility with wider tyres; a higher stack, more comfort... as road bikes for non-competitive riders ought to be. And for touring-in-style aficionados.
