Justin, the tune you're whistling and can't figure out is "I can't see me loving nobody but you for all my life". The Libertines took inspiration from the Turtles. Hey, can't make it more British than a 1967 California band, ask Paul McCartney about it ! Immediately, feel happy... together. But you're not gonna read this anyway because you're on tour.

To me, as a young lad, Pete Doherty was the embodiment of romanticism. He oozed this poetic sense of wonder and awe - somehow managing to persuade a generation that the ugly was beautiful if you looked hard enough. He represented something bigger than himself; the tortured and misunderstood artist. Which was ironic in a sense, because from any outsiders’ perspective, the torment he was experiencing with addiction was the opposite of poetic and romantic. I’ll always be thankful for Pete, The Libs and Babyshambles, because it initiated a real transformative stage in my life of growth, exploration and identity.

Years ago I was with some mates in a bar in Kentish Town and randomly Pete turned up, everyone was excited and he did a few impromptu songs. Afterwards my mate was in the bathroom at the urinal & Pete entered and stood at the urinal next to him. My friend muttered ‘sh*t’ and Pete asked him ‘you ok mate’ to which my friend said ‘yeah it’s just I get stage fright and y’know, you’re Pete Doherty’. Pete then replied ‘Don’t worry mate, it’s a really common problem’ and he proceeded to offer him something which I can’t put down here. Immediately afterwards my mate said he seemed like a really nice fella

I've met a lot of musicians over the years, Pete was the most polite, personable and 'in the moment' of the lot. He was generous with his time and took a lot of time to speak to me and maintain eye contact, it was very different an experience to the hurried, hectic 10 second meet and greet vibe of meeting other people. I find it difficult talking to just about anyone as I'm a bit socially awkward (ADHD related), but I felt absolutely at ease. He was very invested in the moment, calm and centred and I'll always be grateful. I gave him an old poetry book my mum found at the op shop and he appreciated it so hugely, started reading it on the spot.

I adore the Libertines and especially Pete. I'm a failed musician & recovering addict as well. A story I heard about Pete after he'd been kicked out of the band, he was broke, had pawned his gear, was just lost... and he was going around to his friends just trying to find a guitar to borrow. Not so he could perform, not to busk & make money, but just for himself. Like a child finds comfort in holding a teddy bear. The artists I respect the most are the ones that would be making music even if they weren't successful, because it's the only thing they can do. It's so engrained in them that there's no way they could just put it down. Kind of like Anton from the Brian Jamestown Massacre. Anyway, I just love the sincerity of the Libertines. Their music is not contrived and they don't seem to chase trends. The Libertines make me wish I was English..

an understated part of the Libertines is that there is sincerity in the posturing, its not like they're upper class guys with no issues, they really did live that way, I've always read it less about pretending to be punk and more about embracing, exaggerating that image of themselves and sort of representing that demographic, giving the underclass some much needed cool guy representation rather than glorify something they're not

Saw Pete solo very recently. I'm just glad to see him in what seems to be genuine recovery. He was great onstage. The audience were awful, sad that his music brings out the worst in people. It was quite fascinating to experience. It flowed between people being totally uninterested as he played new material, then eruption in elation as he played the hits, and then swiftly back to boredom when more new material was played, to which picking fights and getting thrown out was their idea of a good time. You could cut the tension on the floor with your teeth.

As someone who is 20 now and found the libertines and babyshambles after their 'height of popularity' i was drawn to pete's lyricism. I love songs by bands where lyricis dont always make sense or have a specific meaning like the hives for example, but sonically just make you feel something with no explanation. But Pete wasn't that, his lyrics to me just sounded beautiful. The libs somehow found beauty in places where you wouldn't expect it. Back in uni I was That Girl, who had a collection of all their unreleased stuff on dodgy bootleg CDs (there was _so much_ of it). Legs 11, an unreleased album, was way up there with their official releases and even surpassed a lot of it. When they split up and Pete started Babyshambles, Fuck Forever was my anthem.

The first libertines album really is a great punky pop album, it's up there with some of the great punky albums.

I ❤ The Libertines. And the hotel is The Albion Rooms in Margate. They have a recording studio in there that they recorded this album in.

Justin, I think it’s “Sun Hits the Sky” by Supergrass that you were thinking of??

Don't know anybody else feels the same: you just jump into the jolly mood mode whenever JH does his (sometimes hilarious) claps!

Being a rocker I was a late comer to the Libertines but grew to like their stuff a lot. I actually don’t mind the major to minor thing, which they do quite often. Saw the Babyshambles once, which was more of a circus than a gig.

totally agree about the IV to iv thing, it's to be used sparingly if at all. To me it's a dead giveaway for someone who's not been writing songs for that long.

3:29 OR he was drugged out of his mind lol. I really enjoyed babyshambles and the libertines back in the day, then I forgot about them for some time, now it all feels super nostalgic. He had some very naïve lyrics, and he had some really nice, poetic ones, but overall I really like how he ended up today, few years clean and still singing. He reminds me of Steve-o from jackass...

The idea of the darkness dismissing the libertines 20 years ago blows my mind. They were relevant in a way the darkness were to middle aged mums.

It's funny for me hearing them called posers... by The Darkness. At least he realises the irony these days.

Timelessly British, early 00’s sound. Pete and Carl, when they are truly in sync in life, make a great sound. Definitely one for the festival circuit.
