I started watching Indian films during the early 2000s and I fell in love with them. They are quite different from Western cinema. The majority of the films I have watched are in Hindi language but have seen Telegu, Tamil, and Punjabi films. Like any film in a language, not American-made, I find I gain a window into the world in one part...Italian, German, Chinese, Japanese, Indian, and even British, Australian, and Canadian films have slight differences. I love that. I love trying to see and understand how other cultures tell stories and how we can learn from them. In the case of RRR...by far, it was the best film I saw last year...and as a huge fan of Top Gun: Maverick, that is saying something! There are some amazing videos of the audiences in the States reacting to the song, getting up next to the big screen, and trying to dance to it. During the production of a song...the actors and crew will take direction mainly from the choreographer, even the director of the film takes a bit of a backseat to the choreographer. The vocals are almost never done by the actors and the singers (called playback singers) are usually huge stars themselves...so the actors lip-sync while dancing, even if they can sing (like Priyanka Chopra Jonas...she can sing and has released music, but never sang any songs in the films she starred in). I hope you watch RRR soon...I feel it has something for everyone and is just amazing! Comedy, romance, music, drama, and some amazing (and sometimes outrageous) action scenes!

Yep this wasn't sped up. The actors confirmed they worked their ass off to get it right. The director is sweetest guy when he's not directing, but he takes his job too seriously. Also the actors are professional dancers and the choreographer made this dance based on their strengths.

What is 'Naatu'? Well, the English subtitles nor dubbed versions do any justice to the essence of the song. It's about Indian village nativity. Made a video to explain the cultural nuances as a native Telugu speaker. Here is the explanation for RRR's Oscar winning original song 'Naatu Naatu' in all the three languages I know: 1. In English: kzitem.info/news/bejne/r3iuzZOGqWWnano 2. In Hindi: kzitem.info/news/bejne/rntmz6aBrHqYgoI 3. In Telugu: kzitem.info/news/bejne/z56IqKltfWuWn6g

Just fantastic. I've watched the original video many times, this is my first time watching the Oscars performance because of you. It's really good to watch it having seen the movie clip first because it gives you a great context, and you can recognize and appreciate certain details better that they did at the Oscars because you've seen the movie clip. My goodness those dance moves are so hard! The song is a lot of fun, and it's just nice to see something foreign when a big Oscar award like that. And to hear the audience cheering and appreciating it on stage!

Thank you. It’s sharing culture, I never understand criticisms like cultural appropriation. It’s sharing culture. There are few things more beautiful than to be sharing/be inspired by/appreciate a culture that’s not your own. Maybe Deepika Padukone, but nothing else springs to mind. We used to call it, proudly call it being open minded to new things, not stealing someone’s culture or cultural appropriation.

@@demonbab I agree. As a musician (this is my personal account, I have a separate music channel) Reactions have gotten me fans from New Zealand, Brazil, etc. because of a Kiwi brother reacting to my music. I hope people learn eventually that we can actually learn from other cultures. And the fear is unnecessary I feel, If people are going to insult you or degrade you, then they probably have 19 more people they have to go criticise. They will forget why they hate you by the end, they won’t stop hating though. But I won’t lie the random anger and trolling initially crushed me, I was heart broken. I couldn’t understand why they were being so mean. It’s ok to not like someones music. But people will insult your parents, tell you yo kill yourself, etc. For no reason. Then you slowly realise that’s what they do. Some people just need an excuse to be angry. That’s the only advice I give to younger musicians. If someone hates you , it probably has nothing to do with you. And forget the fantasy that they’ll change. They love hating as much as you love your art/hobby/opinions, etc.
