@@rpc717 yes I agree. There are models of knives for that specific reason. I feel like the glass breaker should be exclusive to those. Lanyard holes made a lot of sense in fixed blades, especially before kydex. They’re super useful and sometimes even necessary in getting your knife safely out of a deep leather sheath with a lot positive retention when most of the handle is in the sheath. On a folder, I think that the tradition just persisted out of inertia.
@chimchu3232

Idk, I think it's very useful on a folder, especially with deep carry. I carry a lot on my belt at work, and it's a pain to fish my knife out of my pocket without a small lanyard, especially if I have gloves on. I put 1-2" of paracord on all my folders that I use at work. I get that they are not necessary for everybody, but they are convenient for people that need them. I really don't want to have to drill holes in my knives because some people don't like how it looks. Just my 2 cents

LOL 😂 😂 , thanks for the laugh MC! If I like / want to attach a lanyard to a knife depends upon the indented usage scenarios, how deep it carries and if it improves the ergonomics or a more secure grip. As a first responder it makes sense for most knives I use to attach a lanyard because it's easier to deploy and hold the knife while wearing gloves (Nitrile medical gloves or cut/puncture resistant 'tactical' gloves). For those knives I don't mind a glass breaker and if done well it can be a nice extra. Because of the worst lanyard hole pocket clip combo on the otherwise perfect Para 3, I carry them with a Lynch clip and a small lanyard, more a simple paracord knot, so it's easier to take them out of my pocket.

Yes, there is a real “tactical” reason for people who actually use their knife (not just carry display queens). When deployed, absolutely required a lanyard (no bead, just Para cord) to be able get the knife from my pocket when wearing gloves, loaded with gear on my chest rig preventing easy access, and covered in crap from war. Beads, scales, and all that other sh*t isn’t tactical. The “pig sticker” fixed blade carried on the front of my chest rig was not used for cutting, it was used for prying & poking.

The reason I use a lanyard on my knives is to prevent them from being lost. My lanyards are the length of my extended arm, allowing me to use the knife without ever having to detach it from the belt. The lanyards get attached to the belt/pants with a small carabiner, allowing me to hand the knife over to some one else in case of need. However, with such a long lanyard, the belly part tends to rest on my knee when I'm standing/walking. A little weird in urban environments. Thus, no lanyard in town.

I used to make lanyards for most of my knives, but now, not so much. I still utilize a lanyard on my dive knife (Spyderco Pacific Salt 2) and my Spyderco Paramilitary 2, but only because of where I carry them. I also use a lanyard on my Ontario Rat1. On this one I made a bright orange lanyard so I can find it if I drop it in the brush or snow. Nothing is for aesthetics. Everything needs to have a purpose. Doesn't have to be true for everyone. I think that's a great point about how many people use pocket clips vs. how many use lanyard holes. That means that the clip placement should always take precedence when it comes to design. I put lanyards on my boat knives since they won't be in my pockets, they'll be hanging from something on the boat where I can get to them if I need them. I'm kinda in the same boat as far as lanyards are concerned. I've never cared about the "tactical advantage" (I mean realistically the ninja fighting makes up 5, maybe 10% of the knife's daily usage?) but I do like how some of them look. I tried them on a few knives and stopped using them despite how cool they looked... they kept visually alerting the ninjas to where the attack was coming from and tritium beads just all out ruin nighttime maneuvers around the ninja camp every second Tuesday... In all seriousness, I just lost interest and didn't care about them because it was something else to keep up with and they get NASTY if you actually use the knife. Sweat, grime, grit, and every other fluid or matter (bodily or not, organic or not, ninja blood and viscera) gets in that synthetic fabric-like material and no amount of washing will get it completely clean. And I am not spending the time or money on fancy paracord to remake lanyards for my favorite knives every week or two. I just wish people would drop the whole tactical advantage thing and realize if they end up in a situation where a knife is needed to defend themselves, they probably made some VERY poor decisions in how to go about their day or at the very least they are more likely to be struck by a meteor and would benefit more from a helmet than anything giving any sort of theoretical tactical advantage.

Main purpose of a lanyard never was knife deployment, but security in different uses of the knife, f.e. when cutting wood to extend the force by wrapping the cord around the hand to establish a far back hold while guaranteeing to not throw it accidentally. Or when trying to thrust the knife into something to split it, it prevents from slipping into the blade, in case there is no proper guard like with puukko knifes, when splitting a carcass. So first off, it's original intent - for most cases - makes no sense at all on folding knives and the lanyards are way to short for that usage anyways to properly wrap them around your hand. But I get why people might like these short deployment lanyards to get the knives out more easily in some cases. With slippery hands it can be useful, but for hard work usage where you have stained, slippery hands so often that you can't first clean your hands, a fixed would as well be more suitable, probably.

But the worst case has been with the pm3, my pocket clip is actually lowered and moved slightly to the left because of the existence of the lanyard hole which changes the whole carry profile of the knife. It's a problem because it causes a larger portion of the handle to stick out of the pocket and most of us want as little exposure as possible. It's not just about being discreet but it's also much more practical in that the handle will not bang into other objects, it also makes the entire carrying experience rather uncomfortable. The problem couldn't even be fixed with a lynch pocket clip like it did with my pm2.

getting a lanyard hole right is almost as hard as using irregardless in a sentence!

What’s the point of glass breakers if you rotate knives on a daily basis? I’d rather have zero glass breakers on my knives and just have one in the glove box always.

I personally don't like deep carry pocket clips. I like to have a little something to grab on to.

I love owning my knives, so I prefer lanyard holes. I am in a wheelchair, and I live in rural Philippines. The style of my lanyards tho, is a bit different. Mine are about 2 feet long, and keep the knives attached to my belt or my messanger bag.

There are two times I think lanyard holes are actually important. Bigass chopper fixed blades, and folders that are small enough that they benefit from a little fob to extend the handle. Otherwise I agree they're pretty unnecessary.

On the Para 3, lanyard holes are screwing the design twice. First there's the giant lanyard barrel pushing the clip down. But also the clip itself has this huge unnecessary flat just below the screws. Why? So that a hole can be drilled there so the same clip can be used to accommodate the lanyard hole on other designs like the Delica. I love Spyderco but they drive me crazy with that stuff.

Just a tip for everyone who might have a tactical argument for a folding knife, a folding knife is a terrible idea for a tactical scenario. Get a good fixed blade that was designed fot self defense

Amen about the Para 3. Great knife. Terrible clip. Ridiculous lanyard hole. Want one? Plan on spending another $20 for a lynch clip or MXG clip. Same with shaman. Same with AD20.5. A knife that Carrie’s that shallow snags on things and gets ripped out of my pocket. Been there, done that. Many times. I often have to roll around on the ground or crawl in excavations or lean/rub up against things. Deep carry is necessary if I want it to stand a chance of staying in my pocket.

Why have a seatbelt cutter on a knife when you have a knife that would do the same thing?

Okay so… let me clarify this because I feel as though everyone thinks most people are tying 12 foot long, helix braided, mountain climbing grade lanyards on their knives. What I do on *some* of my knives is tie a 2 inch loop on it, and throw a bead on it with knot at the end. And that’s what 99 percent of other lanyards I see look like as well. I’ve seen one guy on IG who had like a foot long braided lanyard that he could have literally swung around with a knife on each end like a Hinderer XM-18 nunchuck. I only tie lanyards on smaller knives if I can make it look good with a matching bead and appropriate leather or paracord. My lanyards aren’t even as long as what CRK out of on their knives, and when I buy a CRK I’ll be taking the lanyard off because they don’t need one imo. Lol… so I guess today I’m the “aCtUaLlY” guy in the comments. Of all the useless crap that makers put on knives…*bilboarding all over the blade, glass breakers, proprietary hardware* (we all know who I’m talking about here… I’m not gonna say it, but you know) I don’t understand why a lanyard hole would bother anyone that much unless it’s a para 3 type of scenario *just buy a lynch clip or MXG clip they’re better anyway* The vast majority of my knives don’t have lanyards. But some of them do. And yeah, I buy beads, and pocket trash, and pouches, and RE patches too. Idc man, it’s fun. Sometimes you don’t have enough scratch for a sick knife but you can get in on a RE patch drop or a knuck drop and get something else that’s cool that you can look forward to coming in the mail. That’s half the excitement of collecting knives anyway. The hunt, and the anticipation of waiting for something cool in the mail. Okay, rant over. Thanks for the video MC 🤘
