No! Need to break anything to shut the brain down. Not even a bit. Just shake that head bottle nicely. Instant brain juice. The same goes for hearts electricity. Or it's straight position inside the chest. You can dislodge it. But that needs more force than humanly possible, trafic etc.... Shutting it down is very humanly possible though.

Since a number of people have complained about the use of a simple fencing mask, me hitting too hard, and the cantaloupe as an inadequate substitute for a head... 1.) Yes, there are sturdier HEMA masks with extra padding. But they can't absorb all of the force, so concussions or neck injuries are still a significant risk. So if I had struck a more heavy-duty mask it might not have shown much damage despite a possible brain injury or whiplash in case of a real person wearing it. 2.) Yes, you wouldn't intentionally hit that hard in sparring. But long heavy weapons generate a LOT of force even if you're not putting much effort into it. And when doing deflectional parries you're often powering your counter blow with the energy from your opponent's swing, which happens almost instantaneously and is difficult to limit. It's true that advanced practitioners have good control over the power of their strikes, but even with synthetic swords people do sometimes get knocked out in sparring or competitions, and the risk is significantly higher with staves or polearms. 3.) Yes, of course a cantaloupe is not comparable to a human head. But it still gives you an idea of the force that is transmitted through the fencing mask and padding. It doesn't have to be a broken skull; repeatedly getting knocked out during practice can be very dangerous, especially when the swelling of the brain from a previous concussion is not healed yet.

well, to be honnest i just think its because staff arn't popular enough, everything is in a way, fashion related. Take airsoft or paintball, and compare the model. in large scale skirmish 2 of 3 people has an m4 or an ak47. Even if martial art is kinda different, since some people practice it as self defence, other for passion, or any other reason. i believe that staff is just not (cool). From a custumer or retailer point of view. I mean, who in the world collect staff.. XD way less cooler then entering a house with 10 sword hanging on the wall. Since i do believe that people that practise this kind of martial art (sword fight)are just passionnate of the sport, and not really doing it for self-defense, after all, it would mainly require you too carry a sword 24\7 to be at full battle potential. So bassically making a staff sparing session with 2 people that are passionnate, and want to fight, on a regular basis is a bit hard to achieve. Btw sorry for grammar errors (i'm french Canadian and learning) but even if i watch your video daily, i do disagree that staff sparing is not a thing because it hit too hard.. (boxing and MMA wouldn't be a thing in that case for sure). and i wanted to let you know that point of view

The Archchancellor polished his staff as he walked along. It was a particularly good one, six feet long and quite magical. Not that he used magic very much. It is absolutely a practical thing to have, both as a weapon and as a tool. You can have one and say "It's a walking stick" and unless it has spikes or steel banding no one will give you a second look. Put enough weight on it and it'll work against armor, ending up as a tetsubo, by by that point you've put enough effort into making it that you might as well just use a more typical polearm.

Simple machines- The lever By taking a long object one can multiply the force exerted the greater the length the greater the force the only upper limit is the durability of the material the lever is made of. With a long enough lever a 90 pound person could theoretically lift a house. Quarter staves use this concept to multiply the force exerted on one side causing the business end to accelerate rapidly. When this force comes to a halt on say a persons skull that energy keeps moving into their skull and brain, and when the skull can’t move fast enough to disperse that energy the brain will keep moving resulting in the brain squishing itself against the cranial wall causing what is known as a concussion. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
@MrKenpokarate

Everyone wants to argue about armor and absorption, but as science has taught us we can reduce force by diverting it, padding it, etc. However, eliminating that force entirely is next to impossible without perfect geometry and tech (in the way that scale armor is tech). In other words Anything heavy thats made out of a very rigid and hard material is going to do some damage. That damage depends on ridigity, hardness, and weight. There are also factors such as "grip" like metal domes or pyramid spikes that help concentrate force, therefore increasing damage. To say that it would ignore the armor or somehow the armor would completely absorb it is ridiculous. It all depends on the materials a stave made of oak is not the same as a maple stave. The same way a fencing helmet is not an iron helmet.
@ismata3274
3 жыл бұрын
Agreed. If it were, people working in high-rise places would not be donning a flexible harness and security nets. They would have been donning almighty armours of however many tech possible with many many paddings, in case they fall.

I definitely wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of a quarterstaff strike (let alone a good stab!) wearing only padded armor. And people get caught up with the breaking of the skull or the gashes in the head, they don't even realize that just the speed and mass of it making contact can break your neck or even drive the spine into the brain, it can even cause an "internal decapitation" where the neck is intact but the spine is completely severed inside. This is also why whenever i go in the woods i have a sturdy shoulder height walking stick i made from an ash sapling that is not only good for hiking and walking across streams but in a pinch would do a number on anything on four legs or two.

@Mr Bones me, trying to mentally compare the relative hardness/mass of the spine, and head compared to that of a branch with undetermined surface area at 4 in the morning, after a long programming session. I mean whos asking? as far as mouth bleeding is concerned it would greatly depends on the shape/size/dullness of the knife blade/fingernail. If you are comparing texture the knife is obviously going to be extremely different than a fingernail. As far as stick, vs spine. The vectors of the forces is going to be generally the same, the only difference is going to be the absorption of the force. Which is measured by the distance of deceleration. How much vertical play does a neck actually have before it snaps? not that much. therefore a strong vertical blow to the head is going to be comparable between that of a head mounted on a spine, vs a head mounted on a stick. now I don't know the surface area of the stick, it could have been pointy, or flat however if it was pointy it would have penetrated the base of the cantaloupe, and the damage he displayed was clearly a fissure on the crown of the cantaloupe, so for the purpose of this demonstration a branch sticking out of a log is just fine.

If anyone thinks Che Guevara was a hero, either they are pure evil, or they have insuficient and wrong accounts on his life. He was killed off by the communists themselves, because he was too bloodthirsty. If that doesn't make you want to research a bit more, maybe the fact that he raped a maid while his friends were watching, when he was a teenager, could do so. Let alone all the people he had killed, which were in the thousands. Or, perhaps, the fact that he created a homossexual concentration camp. You know, like one of those the bad evil nazis had for jews? Yeah, for homossexuals.

As a carpenter I can say they the ring was to prevent the grain from splaying in the end. Not really a major problem though, especially with the right wood, and proper routing/sanding on the ends.

actually i still have a question: why is it called quarter staff?
@Skallagrim
8 жыл бұрын
There are different interpretations, but the one that makes the most sense to me is that it's called quarterstaff because you're holding the bottom quarter of the staff. Which also makes it different from the way a Bo staff is traditionally gripped (from what I've seen so far).
