Strats and American amps don't need "Treble Boosting", but Les Pauls and British amps do. Plug a Les Paul, SG, or ES semi-hollow into a Laney, Friedman, Orange or Hiwatt, and then add the Treble Booster to the circuit. It works like a charm.

Yes. The treble booster was a often a norm for those British players when they were playing through the darker British amps and those without a bona fide bright channel.

My TS9 has been severely neglected ever since i built my Brian May style treble booster. I swear that TB into my Marshall DSL100HR is damn near as good as it get. It just "feels" so good and sounds excellent, not to mention how much better my guitar sounds in a mix now. Everyone always says a Marshall with a Tube Screamer is the tone to get which i wont deny is a great sound but a treble booster and a Marshall is light years better. So if im playing modern metal/rock i use the TS9 (I also modded my TS9 so i can be stock, bass boosted which is good when using it with single coils, and bass and gain boosted which is good when using it as a stand alone overdrive into a cleaner amp. I use a three way switch to select the stock or boost positions) and if im playing more classic style rock and even some early 90s stuff i use my treble booster. Im honestly so happy to have built a pedal from scratch that i love so much. I never thought it would become one of my favorite pedals but it certainly has. The TB has a 3 way switch also which is kinda a tone control, using different value caps i have it where it can be treble booster, mid boosted or bass boosted. Its a really really really common design but i also added some extra features like interchangable transistors that are inside the pedal each with their own character. And i added a level control along with the gain control which isnt necessary but treble boosters can be loud as hell and the level allows me more gain shaping options if i need the level a little lower but again theres a reason why this circuit is always built with just a gain control but i like adding features to make the pedal more versatile.

In the 1980’s before I knew of treble boosters, I found the only way to get great tone was to use a graphic eq pedal with the last three sliders angled towards the sky. I thought my amp was bum - a Carvin X-100B, used by Zappa, etc., so it had to be good, right? Turns out the amp was fine. It was the *principle* I had to discover.

Hi mate, Excellent Video, you are spot on,Tony Iommi, Brian May, GlenTipton among many other Rock Guitarist's use T Boosters, some call them their Secret Weapon, not a well kept Secret, nevertheless the Germanium Transistor TB seem more Organic than the Silicon counterpart. I was literally on a Quest to find a high quality TB, bought a Keeley Germanium Ecstasy from the Rock Shop in N/Zealand, a Laney Tony Iommi TB which is awesome, but an Australian Manufacturer, sensational, thank you Leon for your recommendation! See you Fridat for Q&A.

"old school"....."pre historic era"? Well anyway I'm 54 and after trying every pedal and combination possible, I have come to discover that my ears prefer the sound of a treble boost pedal over and overdrive/distortion pedal. Give me a boost and a treble booster (BSM or Analogman or other) and I have a huge variety of tones, especially of my guitars have a slew of choices. There are a lot of affordable treble boosters out there also. I think the key is learning how to youse your volume and your tone knobs. Then you have the placement of the boost before or after or both! This alone will keep you busy for days. Just keep experimenting. But just for the record, I am done with overdrive and distortion pedals! Peace out!

Agree all the way im 30 and nothing beats a treble boosted Marshall. My TS9 has been severely neglected ever since i built a brian may style treble booster on vero board. It was my first pedal build that i did completely from "scratch". Its such an excellent tone with a warmer Marshall tone ( DSL100HR in my case).

Well he just meant in the mid to late 60's, the amps by themselves were not very good, but what made them sound good was the Dallas Rangemaster, personally I agree, forget these Drive/Fuzz whatever ya wanna call 'em, the treble boosters are pretty much the "do it all for ya" pedal.

A very nice demonstration - an a great fat Strat-Rocksound - also without the Trebleboost (Tune down on Eb?) But it depends if you use a Carpacitor at your volumepoti, which usually receives the highs when you rollback the volume. In this case there are to much highs in your sound, very icypicky.

Hey Leon! Late to the treble booster party! These lil stomps got my interest cause they really give some kick and bite in the upper mids, and apparently can be proficiently used to cut the mix, which is essentially what I need, a pedal to cut a very dense mix during solos. My problem is: I've seen TBs always associated with old non-MV amps, how do they work with hot rodded higain Marshall amps? Do they still give the bite and cut or better looking elsewhere?

Nothing near the same thing. Treble boosters boost the upper mid range and give a very unique sound. Ritchie Blackmore used one all the time, Brian May always used one, Judas, Rory Gallagher, Judas Priest etc.. They sound like no other guitar effect. They have to be used on an amp that is already breaking up or very close though or they sound bad.

@@LeonTodd Great tip. Someone also encouraged me to roll the tone off the guitar a little. Between these two adjustments (volume and tone) really gets that sweet spot EQ when using a treble boost. It's ironic because without the boost, folk want to crank the volume and tone on guitar; whereas with treble boost its a matter of balancing all controls to get that magic mix.
