I feel like so much of being considered "pretty without makeup" is about just having "good" skin. This realization really messed with my mind as someone with acne, I had felt, for significant portions of my life, that I'd never be pretty as long as I still had acne.

We need to talk about how male celebrities can go out frumpy and are considered "down to earth" and "not letting fame affect their fashion sense" but if a female celebrity dares to step out in comfy clothes with a bare face they're "unrecognizable". It gets very frustrating to see the double standard. When can we exist without having to be put together all the time. It is exhausting. I will say that male celebrities might be shamed too but I personally have not seen it.

I used to tell myself “you’re allowed to look ugly” until I stopped worrying about whether or not I looked ugly. I don’t think I ever looked ugly, or that ugly is a real thing when it comes to people, but it was helpful to give myself permission to just exist as I naturally am. The fear was that someone else would see me and think I’m ugly. But I gradually realised that’s not my problem and does not impact my life in any way.

I love that girl ❤ That is why I rarely wear makeup. The majority of my photos are naturally me and when people see me they see my natural face all the time. And when I do wear make up it's so light that most people can't even tell I'm wearing it. I just got to the point where I wanted to always be able to recognize myself in my photos and in the mirror. It's been fun seeing how much I've naturally changed over the years. Some pictures I have really bad acne from having a baby some photos I'm glowing from pregnancy and some photos my skin is darker for no reason at all then changes a year later to where it's much lighter. Some there's more fat in my face as I've gained weight and then there is less of it when I lost weight. I absolutely love the changes of life I've seen in myself. Even if at the time I struggled with insecurities I'm glad I never hid it. I'm 34 and I can honestly say I love my looks more than I did at 21.

I *never* wear any makeup, don't own any, and have never felt ugly or insecure about how I look because it's just not expected by anybody and everybody is used to seeing people going completely barefaced most of the time. Instagram models and photo studios only choose the best photos. Not one with your eyes half closed. Plus specific lighting can enhance makeup or if it’s too heavy be unflattering. But that doesn’t make the person ugly. Photos are different from seeing a person in real life. There are so many factors that contribute to having that perfect photo. Not saying I think you are wrong but…men in ads and movies do 10000% have makeup & are photoshopped. Also men in general do have more distinctive facial/body features like thicker skin, thicker hair, more sculptured faces (that are in fashion for a while), darker lashes etc etc so that’s why we see them as “beautiful without makeup”. Women who do fit into these standards are seen as beautiful without makeup as well. I genuinely believe that female beauty standards are male oriented at their core not only In obvious things like being lean and fit and having strong jawline with defined cheekbones, but also in trying to look more “coloured” (that for many women can only be achieved with makeup). Because otherwise more soft bodies and soft, sublime beauty would be the “ideal”. Which is not.

Some ppl just lucky with genetics but trust me most of the things u mention cost a LOT of money. Clear skin without hyperpigmentation? Could be good diet + good skincare product + good genes. Good figure? They prob workout very hard and stay on a strict diet and again…lucky. Most of these are from good genetics + healthy lifestyle. So don’t blame urself for not looking like them. Prescription Retin A. I had HORRENDOUS hormonal acne in my late teens. I couldn't leave the house without a huge amount of make-up and my self-confidence was non-existent. Now I'm in your 40s and haven't worn make-up for 20 years. No scars, no wrinkles - just a big ol' hat for sun protection! Things like micro needling are also great, but Retin A literally causes acne scars to progressively peel away over time. It was a god-send for me, but I still have an aversion to make-up after having to hide my acne behind it. I don't wear make-up to work, and girls in their 20s will ask me about my skin. Retin-A initially itches like hell, makes you look like a burn victim, and causes flakiness etc. That all goes - be patient - and you are left with clear baby skin.

A few years ago I decided to take the money I would otherwise spend on makeup and spend it on skincare instead. I went from not walking out the door without full makeup on to makeup being like dessert - I use it when I feel like it but it’s few and far between and only bc I like it. I understand how hard it is to get out of a depression slump but afer experiencing what you went through, dont let it beat you. Life is fleeting. You are a strong, beautiful, courageous woman. Look in the mirror and remind yourself of how amazing you are! Look how far you've come! You dont need makeup to be beautiful but if you feel you've lost all motivation, try baby steps. Put mascara on today.. maybe do your nails on the weekend. One day at a time. You'll never be the person you were before... you're stronger now. You've faced loss and you kicked cancers ass. You're a warrior queen! Own it. Sending you love and strength 🩷💜🩷

You don't have to wear makeup now. Try to make yourself feel better - listen to the music you like, maybe find a new hobby (drawing, reading, and journaling can help !!), eat food you like, and do some self- care, like nice bath with candles. This is why I'm really grateful for being Dutch and for my mom raising me with old fashioned values. In the Netherlands, our climate isn't the most make-up friendliest so being bare faced is pretty normal in our culture, well it used to be. Being a 97 liner, I can see that Gen Z kids are way more prone to wearing make-up, especially the Instagram kind in the big cities. The countryside is still a bit more sober in regards of following the trend. I thank the universe of my mom being like, "You cannot wear make-up until you're sixteen and a young lady! Make-up has no place on a child's face." I've remained very sober in regards of make-up as I rarely wear it and when I do it's usually just me doing eyeshadow, eye-pencil and/or eyeliner with mascara because the eyes are the nipples of the face, after all (I hope anyone gets that reference)

I’m allergic to so much, I had to give up makeup a few years ago. Even lipstick. It was challenging to get used to seeing my bare face without cringing, but man, the feeling of freedom has been incredible. Truly a joy! My free time increased; no makeup to put on or take off. A big money saver too. No more managing skin reactions. I know I could look attractive with makeup, but it’s just not worth the resulting problems. Literally it would make my skin hurt or my eyelids swell. A neighbor who’s only seen me “as is”, recently saw an old social media photo with full makeup. She couldn’t stop exclaiming over how pretty I was, genuinely surprised that it was possible for me. That hurt, but it’s still worth it to me to stay natural. I’m finally comfortable in my own skin. The bonus has been my skin has never looked better. My eyelashes grew longer. The lesson has been, the contrast of makeup and no-makeup days creates dissatisfaction. Eventually a natural face looks normal, and that is a wonderful feeling. 😊

I have been thinking this for years. Ever since I was a kid I had this epiphany that the vast majority of women are wearing makeup in their day to day lives. And it’s seen as a bold political statement to just exist as yourself. We need to change this, first by accepting ourselves in all our states, then one another. I found that the less insecure I am and the more I love myself, the more I love other women❤️

So many facts dropped here. Thanks for making videos like this. We know it deep down but this is a great reminder. These days I intentionally go out without makeup, hair up etc so people will leave me alone. I’d rather be unapproachable sometimes, but not the “unapproachable makeup” kind. The attention from strangers when I’m dressed and glammed up actually annoys me- like, I’m out here because I have sh*t to do, not because I want compliments.

I remember I would always see a certain group of people with my hair up and no make up because I’d see them after the gym and I’d showered etc. I invited them to my birthday party, and when they arrived I greeted them happily and they asked where “i” was…then when I proceeded to tell them it was me, they said they couldn’t believe it and I looked like a different person 🙃 after that I really struggled with my natural face more than previously. I also suffer with red, easy to blush. oily skin. 🎉🎉

I use to wear makeup a good bit and i just kinda stopped, i wear it every once and a while but not very often. Now when i wear it i CANT stand the feeling of having stuff on my face, it makes my nose pour and sometimes my eyes! For everyone in the comments just know you are beautiful WITH and WITHOUT makeup. Hope everyone is having a great day!

AGREED 💯. I feel totally guilt-free when going into public nowadays without my makeup face on becuz I owe it to my skin to give it a damn break AND I owe it to other ppl to know I don't actually look perfect 24/7!

OMG thank you for sharing these thoughts. It's so refreshing to find this video after bingeing for half an hour on 'before and after' makeup videos and starting to wonder if I should wear makeup more often. I rarely wear it and I don't feel ugly without it but I do feel like I'm a slacker for not being more glamorous all the time. Thanks for pointing out the importance of remembering that natural is beautiful too.

I don't like make-up, i don't wear it and i feel uncomfortable with it, i am tired of people calling me "i am not like the other girls" and i still don't understand why people are so triggered when someone doesn't like make-up.

I feel like the purpose of makeup is to enhance your favorite features/ self expression🥹 It breaks my heart that one of my friends has the pressure to wear makeup to even store😢💔

I can’t remember the exact phrasing, but I heard a while back and it stuck with me for a long time: You do not owe the world beauty in trade for existence. You are not a decoration, and you have no obligation to be attractive to be valuable or exist in a beautiful and fulfilled life.

I was a paramedical makeup artist and Aesthetician for 30 yrs. I got very sick with Lyme , housebound for several yrs. I stopped putting my makeup on, stopped getting dressed for the day even. I met someone online and started putting makeup on again, it does make you feel better. Its about enhancing beauty not changing your appearance to not be recognized.

@@DeirdreMFox yes! I try, but with all the symptoms, it’s basically like putting it on and then it’s a mess 5 mins later because I’m laying down, runny nose, etc. 😂🤦♀️I also don’t know much about makeup so I don’t really know if there’s a way to avoid that. I basically just got back into it and have learned a lot (esp from Stephanie) but I wish someone would do like… a ‘chronic illness makeup’ or something 🤣

I agree the pressure for looking your best and wearing makeup all the time is crazy. From when I started wearing makeup (12ish) until after college I would not leave the house without a full face of makeup on because I was worried I would run into someone that I knew and they would see me without makeup on. It wasn't until I moved to a small mountain town in Colorado that I stopped worrying about leaving the house without makeup. Everyone up here isn't big on lots of makeup especially for going out everyday. I don't know if I would have changed my mindset if my environment wasn't so accepting about wearing no makeup

Whether or not you wear makeup...love yourself. There are constant expectations to wear makeup in society. I even feel pressure to wear concealer because of my under eye circles. If you don't, you get told you look bad, tired, or "different." Thank you for this!

I was so sick of being asked whether I'm sick or tired on the days that I wasn't wearing make-up, that I stopped wearing make-up altogether. Now when I do wear make-up I get so many compliments that it makes me uncomfortable. I don't know what to do.

I once worked with a woman who wore a lot of makeup. One day she came in late and was barefaced, it was quite a shock because she looked like a very different person. I didn’t realise how much contouring she did. She looked absolutely fine, just like a different person altogether. When everyday makeup is beyond enhancing features but becomes a mask, I imagine it’s such a viscous cycle

I agree with getting in the water on the first date or first time hanging out. Especially at the beach. It’s just so causal when the waves crash it’s just such a causal organic time! :)

When I was living in the south of the US, I had SO many people come up to me and say “What’s wrong with your face?!” Or “you’d be so pretty if only you put some makeup on over that bad skin!” Uh, I was wearing makeup, it was just nearly impossible to neutralize the redness of my rosacea with an amount of makeup I felt ok wearing. The comments from strangers got so bad I dreaded leaving the house….

Honestly I’ve always thought rosacia looks cute. I have a friend who has redness on her face and she was telling me the other day that she didn’t like it and I was appalled. She’s so beautiful and I would’ve never assumed that it was an insecurity. I assumed people only covered it to provide a “clear” base for more precise makeup application. The redness gives a “live”, “flushed”look to the face that I genuinely think is so cute and nothing to think twice about 🥰

I love wearing makeup. I also love not wearing makeup. One thing I will say the pandemic did for me was getting used to stepping outside without any makeup. And now I will go do a full day out with either minimal or no makeup regularly. And then other days I get more glammed up bc I feel like it. Whether I wear makeup or not, I'm still me

I never wore make up as a teen, which was confusing to some of my peers. I just explained that I was choosing to sleep in a bit later instead of getting up to do make up and if they didn't think I was pretty without make up then you just don't think I'm pretty. I can handle that if you can. Now I am many years later with older skin and I appreciate being able to use make up when I want, but I still don't every day. I'm honestly not that good with makeup, so it's not like I'm getting to celebrity levels of glam or anything. I'd be curious to see what a professional make up artist could do, but I would not want to go through the rigor of that every day!
