I visited Nachi Falls in the Kii Mountains of Wakayama Prefecture, Japan. Nachi is Japan's highest single-drop waterfall, and was especially gushing today due to snow melt and recent heavy rains.
I took a bus from Nachi station on the coast up to the waterfall and hiked up to it. The misty spray hits you before you even get close. I burned a prayer stick and paid extra for the closer viewing platform access.
After that I hiked way up the steep stone steps to Kumano Nachi Shrine, where I walked through a gigantic live prayer tree trunk, and visited Seigantoji, an attached Buddhist temple with a classic view of an orange pagoda and the falls.
It's said that when you visit this area, your soul dies and is reborn, and when you re-enter society afterwards, you're a new and better person. There may be something to that; this was a great trip to a classic piece of mystical Japanese history.
