The 1st photo is a man named private lindsay rogers, he was a part of the 25th Canadian battalion. The story goes that he was talking to his Sargent when he was hit by a sniper killer the Sargent next to him instantly and the bullet hit Lindsay in the neck. They told him that they needed to wait till night fall to send him to a field hospital, when he was rescued, someone took a photo of him and all he was doing was smiling for the camera as that is what many ww1 soldiers did when injured. He had light eyes and the film did not capture them. And on august 16th 1917 he was killed after pushing an enemy position

World War I was one of the first large scale "modern wars" with planes, tanks, machine guns, and chemical weapons like mustard gas, which was later banned once people saw how horrific it was. Since it was the first large war with all of these new technologies, many soldiers saw things that folks had never seen before in battle which contributed to the shell shock. By the time World War II came around 21 years later, the military was SLIGHTLY more well equipped to handle shell shock and helping soldiers, but events such as D-Day, Guadalcanal, and liberating the concentration camps were still so horrific that many "weren't okay" after that.

World War I became the basis for the study of PTSD more commonly known during that era as Shell Shock. The name stemmed from the result of having to live through the artillery shells consistently bombarding the earth around an individual. During the First World War and the Second, shell shock was viewed as an act of cowardice, and any soldier displaying symptoms of wartime trauma was subsequently shot. Imagine being forced to fight in the dark, wet, and cold muddy hellscape of France all because some Serb was a little butthurt about Bosnia watching your friends die by your side either by, poisonous gas, being torched to death, gunned down, drowing in mud, disease, being lacerated to death, stabbed by a bayonet, beaten with a club, smacked to death by a shovel, crushed by an impenetrable metal box on tracks, having their legs blown off in an artillery barrage, and then being called a coward cause you can't hack seeing another one of your comrades dying in a similar fashion or because you're so dead inside you've come to terms that this is your fate, that No Man's Land will be your cold muddy tomb. And shot for it.

His eyes show obvious she’ll shock, and viewing someone as “creepy” for trauma is just cruel and sad. On an interesting historical note it’s also important to note that part of what makes his eyes look like that is just that film at the time often washed out pale eyes, he likely had blue or grey eyes which come off as fully white on film, his eyes would have looked more typical in person.

I actually researched the backstory of that photograph. Turns out that soldier (I completely forgot what his name was but his identity is known) was just smiling for the cameras like anyone today would do for taking a selfie or whatnot. The weird lighting that makes it look creepy was simply caused by the infant state of photographic technology at that time combined with that the device that was used to take the photo itself might not have been in great condition.

The first picture is of private Lindsay Rogers a Canadian soldier. It’s a common misconception that he has shell shock / ptsd. He was actually shot in the neck. The film did not capture his light coloured eyes properly. He was probably just smiling having his photo taken as that was quite normal to do, and possibly because he survived getting shot through his neck.

The saddest part about WW1 was the aftermath. Traumatized soldiers who survived the whole hell and returned home have been outcasted by the very civilians they fought for, and "doctors" have been using them as lab rats for their barbaric treatments. All because they were speaking about their trauma. The issue of PTSD wasn't taken seriously up until 1970s with Vietnam War, showing you how truly fvcked previous generations were when it comes to understanding of mental health.

For any wondering, the person in the photo is private Lindsay rogers, part of one of the Canadian battalions. (I don’t remember which battalion) So basically, rogers was talking to a commander when a sniper took a shot which passed through rogers commander and hit roger directly in the neck. The commander he was talking to was killed by the shot but rogers miraculously survived. Rogers unfortunately had to wait in the trenches for the day so that he could be carried out under the cover of night. Rogers unfortunately, some time later, died on the front lines while charging an enemy line. (Btw if I said anything wrong please tell me so I can correct it!)

A little note to add, if you guys know about the SCP Foundation, then you probably have seen this photo in different ways or shots. This is because this photo was used for the origin of SCP-106 as a young man instead of the Old Man. And we all know that SCP 106 is a sadistic monster, so the person who saw this photo thought of it creepy and used it as the origin of SCP-106, but that’s my theory of it.

The worst part is that the veterans didn't get the care they needed once returned home. The broken and dejected were only helped by charities, while states told their heroes: "Behave yourself".

*SOMETHING EVEN MORE INTERESTING* In WW1 we did not have any real concept of "mental health" and shell shock - which is PTSD - manifested as physical symptoms, like grinning By WW2 we had a good understanding of mental illness and psychotherapy and PTSD manifested in EMOTIONAL and PSYCHOLOGICAL ways and not in physical ways. Showing that we manifest symptoms in the way we believe they should be manifest. As painful as pain is - its not REAL - it in your head not your hurt hand...

Shell shock that was so prevalent in WW1 is sometimes considered a distinct condition from typical PTSD that we see today. PTSD is primarily a psychiatric condition that results from witnessing or experiencing traumatic events or sustained abuse. Shell shocked soldiers in WW1 presented additional neurological injuries from constant extreme sensory shock from shelling.

I have mild PTSD from childhood sexual trauma from witnessing things on tv, the internet and in school that I shouldn’t have as an 8 year old child (my parents were unaware but refuse to accept my diagnosis) but I don’t get that creepy look. My best friend however gets this look all the time. She’s bipolar and borderline. It’s very sad 😢

It is believed to be Private Robert Lindsay Rogers of the 25th Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force. It is likely not a picture of shell shock but joy at being alive. There were two photographs, one outside the trench and one closer up.

I knew an ex soldier that had been shell shocked, in Viet Nam. A shell exploded near him. He couldn’t hear a thing, completely deaf.

Most tragic....what's more tragic is that this guy did not make it home, as I understand it...KIA...😢
I remember seeing the cropped picture from an SCP picture and assumed it was fake or out of context, making it creepy. I assume many people had their own reasons for whatever they know, but knowing this, now, I agree that the photo's origin is from a horrible place. It is a little relieving to have an ending to this forgotten mystery, I mean.

That explains why every time something doesn’t go my way, instead of showing a sad face, I have a laughing face. 😂
