Winston, I just want to say, I've been watching you for a year now, and I appreciate that people like you speak up about this. Our teacher gave us a serious talk about the CCP issue in class today and the students were asked to share how they feel. A lot of students from China agreed with him. It's easy to feel demoralized but the fact that people realize how tthey bully their own people and they are starting to do it to us in the west now gives us a lot of hope.

I had the same experience in Thailand, we were taken on a snorkelling trip near the Burmese border, halfway through the trip they took us to a very run-down and artificial looking 'ethnic minority' village. The whole experience was uncomfortable. My girlfriend and I (who can both speak Thai) ended up talking to a few villagers, they all had really sad stories as their nomadic way of life had been stopped due to the modern border rules between Myanmar and Thailand. They were all stateless too, neither the Burmese or the Thai government wanted to give them citizenship, so they had to make a living on a small crappy piece of land 'given' to them by the Thai government and make a living selling shitty trinkets. Awful.

In Tibet, there was a once-beautiful mountain town with a rushing river running through it, formerly called DARTSEDO. The Tibetans in that mountain region held out against the Chinese forces for a long time, until resistance was finally crushed. And then the Chinese re-named the town KANDING ~~ which means "The place where the Tibetans were defeated"! A letter or package posted to 'Dartsedo' will NOT be delivered there today. It will only be delivered if you address it to 'Kanding'. Talk about suppression and oppression. So.. Imagine living one's whole life there, shackled to that hateful name, a daily reminder of the conqueror's military power. But here’s the kicker... A Wise Old Monk through a translator, told of this deep pain: “But the people's spirit is not broken, & strength, humor & resilience run underground like a stream.. like sacred living waters.” Despite the old implacable method of a conqueror/colonizer re-naming a place, they could never break the original inhabitants' spirit.

In 1946: TIME's report on Chinese/KMT troops' being sent to the island of Taiwan to accept Japanese surrounder: "Formosans complained that the Chinese occupation army was looting stocks, letting crops, refineries, railroads and power plants go to rack & ruin." " Formosans greeted the few visiting Americans with: "You were kind to the Japanese, you dropped the atom on them. You dropped the Chinese on us!" Thoughtful Chinese on the mainland began to agree with the Formosans. Said Ta Rung Pao, China's counterpart of the New York Times: "Fundamentally speaking, China was not qualified to take over . . . she lacks the men . . . technique . . . commodities . . . capital. She governs, but is inefficient. She takes, but she does not give. This is the government's shame." Most foreign observers in Formosa agreed that if a referendum were taken today Formosans would vote for U.S. rule. Second choice-Japan." ....At the end...The Chinese government at the time took the chance to seize Taiwan. Later, KMT lost Chinese civil war and escaped to Taiwan. Taiwan suddently became another "China" without caring about Taiwanese people's own will. However, Taiwan is now democracy governed by it's own people. Even the current president has Formosan aboriginal heritage. Therefore, there is still hope in Tibet and Xinjiang... Taiwan is now almost free after more than 50 years of oppressing. (Taiwan did not go through revolution, so a lot of old time mistakes have not been corrected, such as it's country name ROC..the national flag..etc. It's changing, but slowly... Despite having visited many ethnic minority museums all over the country in my early years there, I sadly never found one that was run by the local minority group themselves. Many were then closed with the switch to building fake ethnic villages or crappy theme parks popping up all over the place - always with Han-managed tourist trips and nearby shops and restaurants. To be fair, they have to do something to make money. In Sa-Pa, Vietnam, there is a Hmong tour agency and they dress up, take you to their villages and sell you traditional crafts and garbs. But the agency is also a school and board for these girls and they are better off because of it. At night they'd change into western garb and you'd find them in restaurants and pubs throughout the village and you'd have a chance to talk to them outside of the "show" put on during the day and are very happy with the arrangement. I met the owner of this agency and she's a wonderful, hardworking women that's fighting for a better future for these girls. We can't throw all of these on one pile and say it's bad, rather judge on a case-by-case basis.

In many ways China is copying ex URSS: glamourising & stereotyping minorities, while pushing linguistic assimilation on other side. If you think about that, it's a stupid policy because on the long run they cut off chances to use these minorities as cultural ambassadors of China. Think about how Uyghurs or other Turkic minorities could be an excellent asset to spread Chinese soft & economic power to Turkic speaking countries. Instead, they try to cancel Uyghur language and downgrading Uyghurs role to wannabe dancers in BBQ restaurants.

I am a Chinese living in North America, and I appreciate what Winston is doing here. It's so sad that the truth of China was told by an American citizen. Nowadays less and less Chinese is bold enough to say things like this, people are too scared to say anything to get themselves in trouble. I am so sure that if this is explained by the Chinese officials, they would say "this is the Chinese culture, don't interfere Chinese domestic issues you damn Americans!" Thank God there are still brave people out there who would speak up. Critical thinking is missing in China, and you can tell from the local citizen's facial expression and behaviors that they are not living a happy life, but still, no one in China cares about them anymore. I have to say there used to be a lot of Chinese Journalists seeking the truth of China, but most of them got silenced or got arrested, and some of the rest got immigrated to other countries. It is a truly sad situation, and the whole world just been more and more censored by the Chinese officials. Again, thanks Winston for speaking up for Chinese people! It should be noted that a number of ethnic groups and cultures once distinct from the Han were conquered and assimilated over the centuries, such as the Viet - (related to their remnant, the Vietnamese) and Miao people of southern China, who retain ancestral customs and remain ditinguishable from northern Han Chinese. Ergo, many now considered Han were once of another stripe, and the monoculture of 2021 is something of an artificial construct. When a Chinese troll points a stained, accusatory finger at the West for its adventures in colonialism, kindly remind him of his historical penchant for not only colonizing but forcefully assimilating his immediate neighbors; most recently in Tibet, Outer Mongolia, Manchuria and the Turkik regions of western China.

I am Hmong, and back in the 1600 we were called the Miao (not sure to spell it) we owned a land that is now called China, and the story how we become to be is really sad. The Hmong and Han people at first were at peace, the Hmong taught the Han people their way of life, and the Han also did too. Just so you guys know, we Hmong people don’t even know our own history, so this is based off of theories and from China’s history records. After a few years of peace, the Han people decided they wanted our land, so they started a huge war with us. We Hmong people were scared because we had way less people than the Chinese. And at the time we didn’t know that the Hans were plotting against us. So when the war started, many Hmong people were slaughtered and our Hmong King was killed during a battle. The Chinese ordered for all Hmong people to be captured, or killed. And they could easily recognize us because apparently we had blonde hair and blue eyes (but our face looked Chinese. I do kind of believe the blonde hair because my aunt had blonde hair when she was young, but her hair started turning black. And there are other Hmong people who actually have natural blonde hair, but it’s a small percentage.) Basically, this was not a war anymore, but a genocide. The Hmong people who were captured were raped (that’s probably why we lost our blonde hair and blue eyes trait, because woman’s and children’s would get raped a lot during those times.) And if the Chinese people found out the Hmong were writing in their written language, they would get executed and their writings were burned. It was believed that the Chinese did not want any trace of us, so they burned our history records. After hunting down most of the Hmong people, the remaining ones, (I think this is years later) escaped China and ran to Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and etc. Since they had no king or leader, the Hmong people didn’t have someone to reunite them, so they all scattered, leaving survival as top priority. They ran into the mountains of Laos, Thailand and Vietnam, and lived their for thousands of years. The Hmong who were still stuck at China would hide themselves. (Now the Hmong children’s has black hair because of the blood mixing.) And if the blonde hair or blue eyes trait survived and the mother gave birth to a blonde baby, they would kill it, scared that they would get recognize as a Hmong person. Skip years later during Vietnam War. The Hmong people were living at peace again, and they made trades with the native people. They made a living and were healing from the genocide. But sadly, that would not be the end. As we all know, America was involved in the Vietnam War. What you don’t know, is that the Hmong people were involved too. Schools don’t teach us about the secret war so that is why people don’t know this. But the American CSI knew that there was freedom loving people living in the mountains of Laos. (Which I believe was a communist country.) And so they sent a team of American soldiers to recruit us for war. Because the Hmong people knew our ways around the jungle, we were needed by the Americans. And the Americans promised the Hmong people freedom, by letting them in their country. The Hmong people agreed, believing that the Americans would win them freedom. So the Americans trained the Hmong people to save injured Americans pilots who fell from their planes. They were also trained how to use guns and knives. And as the war ended, America lost. They retreated leaving the Hmong people behind, and vulnerable. When the Laos Communist found out that the Hmong people were helping the Americans, they began a genocide. Again, Hmong people were victims of genocides. Thousands of Hmong villages were bombed and put a blaze. Hmong woman and children’s were raped, while the men’s were murdered. And the Hmong people, again, had no choice but to run. (If you ask the elder Hmong people of their opinion of Americans, they absolutely hate Americans for abandoning them 😬) So Hmong people left everything behind and took their families to run to the Mekong River. And as they were fleeing, they were being hunted down. Many Hmong people became orphans as mothers and father sacrifice for them. And I would hear sad stories of babies getting shot because in our culture we carry the babies on our back, and they would shoot them from behind. My Step-Grandma actually told me that when she was fleeing, two of her siblings died. One died from hunger and another got shot and bled out. The Hmong people crossed the Mekong River to Thailand where they were put into refugee camps. Finally, the Americans realized that they had left the Hmong people, and opened their country to let them in. There were two waves of Hmong refugees coming in America. One in the 1970’s and I believe in the 2000’s as well. My grandparents despised the Americans so much, that they ran away from the refugee camps, refusing to immigrate to America. So my family did not immigrate to America until 2005. There are still some Hmong people who live in China who are just alive for entertainment purposes. Most of them completely lost their culture and is living as Chinese. My culture and traditions are dying because my people are constantly surrounded with different cultures. I’m actually scared that our language will die out, and our written language is endangered, only a few Hmong elder still remembers how to write in our written language this day. Sorry this was so long lol. If you have more information fellow Hmong people, please drop down in reply cuz it’s a very confusing history with a lot of mysteries. Edit: I just learned that it wasn’t actually the Han people who killed the Hmong (genocide) it was actually the Manchu who started a war with the Hmong because of the different colored hair.

The tribe that I am speaking about also owned a firearms store and my husband had a man come in to teach trapping and tracking so many in younger generations could learn how they used to live off the land and they decided to close the store but of course they had a half off sale when they were closing and only tribal members could come in the first day and buy what they wanted before the rest of the tribe. It’s so sickening the amount of corruption that it’s almost worse than what goes on in Washington. It’s sad because they are driving people away who want to live and care about their people and almost encouraging hopelessness.

Hat's off to you Winston for not teaching that uncle a lesson. Your more of a man than I could ever be... I'm so sad to see and to know that this type of stuff goes on in China, You've opened my eye's to so many atrocities that I cry for the citizen's of China. I pray the CCP get what they deserve and the people of China get some justice.

Thanks again for an informative video. Before actually retiring my plans were to travel through rural China just you & C-Milk have done. I even went back to school & studied & trained in Traditional Chinese Medicine & Acupuncture. Times have changed & there is no way in Hell that I would venture into China. Your videos opened up my mind. Most of my Professor's followed the CCP Guidelines. Majority were Han & Party members. All your vlogs are interesting & educational. I do miss the most are the 2 of you Ranting on open microphone as you rode your bikes through the country. Glad you guys got out before it was too late.

As much as I like Winston and Laowhy, I must say I don't think you should crush your dream of visiting rural China. It's still a cool place, and you can still find lots of hidden gems and authentic people. C-milk and Serpentza often makes it sound like all of China is shite (or at least is now). Yes, it's getting "worse" (in whatever parameter that may be measured in) but it's still China, and it's still worth seeing. Anyway...

@@citizenofterra I think Winston is just pointing out how much the CCP has cracked down on foreigners lately. He never talks ill of the people, he thinks they're all great.

@@lainiwakura1776 I know, he keeps saying that. But he still paints the overall picture that China is "over" for foreigners and we can't go there anymore. I mean, I get what he's saying (and it IS really hard to go there today because of Covid, if not impossible). I was there in the end of 2019, just before Corona truly erupted. I lived in Chongqing and had a blast. Visited the surrounding countryside and went further north to Gansu, Qinghai etc. You can still do this and ignore the Beijing propaganda, is what I am trying to say. So again, for the OP, don't let a bit of propaganda deter you from your dream trip!
