Actually, 6 mp is plenty for many things. Most people forget that many of the top photographers out there, including on KZitem, made their names in photography using cameras that had 6-8-10 megapixels. It was their skill in crafting good images that made them stand out. More megapixels do give you more cropping and editing options, but the picture has to be good to start out with in the first place…🙂

At my son's recent graduation I found it interesting that the official photographers- with a top name among professional portrait companies- were using the Nikon D300, which came out in 2007. With its massive 12.3 mp and superior image quality, why change? I could only ever afford a D200, but its 10.2 mp sensor still fills a 4k set with room to spare; nice colours, too!

Before I switched to M43 I used a Canon 5D2 and a 1Ds3, both 20Mp and both old for all of my pro shoots the colours and contrast were awesome. I had ‘upgraded’ previously to newer cameras but they didn’t give a noticeable difference in the quality presented to my customers so I sold them and saved my money. The 1Ds3 had around 1/2 a million actuations when I finally sold it and was beaten up visually but it’s still going strong for its current owner. These Nikons are of a similar quality so expect it to still be going in another 17 years…..as long as you can still get batteries and memory cards

NIKON D40 was my first DSLR. Only 6 megapixels. But even shooting through the LCD screen and in Raw format, there was almost no lag. I missed that when I jumped up to higher megapixel NIKONs and the lag really caused a lot of missed shots.

@repmidwest

@@robinwong I dont think its anything mechanical. Only when shooting through the live feed. On the relatively low megapixel D40 there was only a momentary lag between press and shutter, and you got the shot pretty much at the same time as the press. But with higher megapixel Nikons, (I upgraded to the D3200 and then D5100) there is like a 1/2 second lag between the press and the shutter. Now that I think about it, I think its more to do with the camera switching back to viewfinder mode (because the live view goes black) to actually engage the shutter than it has to do with processing higher megapixels images..

Ah, that D50 is built well like a tank. I'll have to read up the specs later. But this video brings up a happy memory. My first serious camera is my Dad's Nikon D200. It was a huge jump from using a second hand Canon S2 bridge camera to a full blown semi-pro DSLR. Thick. Heavy. A literal tank. I love it and I slowly made it my camera over time by growing my small arsenal of lenses, batteries, and a third party handgrip. I still have the D200 and it's one of my two heirloom cameras (the other one is a Fujifilm XT20). Who knows? Maybe I'll play with the old girl again soon.

Build like a tank with a beefy grip. Put this thing on a neck strap and swing it and you could brain someone. The D50 comes with a Sony CCD ICX-453-AQ sensor. Only 4 Nikon camera's used this specific sensor D50, D40, D70 amd D70s. The D5 is the only one with this specific CCD and AF motor. CCD vs CMOS? You be the judge.

Talking about old Nikon legendary cameras, I still have my D200 sitting in my dehumidifier and I use it once in a while pairing it with my Sigma 35mm f1.4 Art. Just love the color coming out of its CCD sensor. If you have a chance, try it. BTW, I use both Nikon and Oly systems.

I use a lot of systems other than Olympus. I'd love to try as many cameras as possible, but this is also a venture that brings no return, other than just for fun. Unless I can find the D200 selling for the price just a few cups of coffee, I'd pass!

Robin , I concur . This was a fantastic camera and I almost bought , but it was sold out when I went to the store and settled on the Pentax K110D. The other great thing with the D50 was that it could take standard manual Nikon lenses . Fantastic way to use my old primes I had thought . 6mp is way good enough for most situations and I keep my old Pentax for when it is too wet or cold to risk my EM10 Mkii . In reality, most of us need nothing more than 12 mp and having 16, 20 or 26, more than enough and no real need for more , unless you have special requirements . Thanks Robin for the review . Sadly , I have more affinity with old film cameras and the nostalgia those old camera mag adverts had on me as a student back in the seventies . Digital cameras have largely left me cold on that regards . However , Fuji and Olympus break that with the series xt range and the em10’s. Those models may not be the most high ranking cameras about, but they inspire like a Leica and no doubt a few other brands . Does anybody have any special digital camera models to match the nostalgia of the old film cameras

Thanks for sharing Carmen, appreciate that. Yeah some magic from the film days are lost in the digital advancement, that much I have to agree. All chasing technical perfection and many modern digital cameras they don't have "soul".

@@robinwong Regarding soul ha ha; I have returned from doing a photo shoot with my youngest grandchild and her mother and just finished editing on my phone . I went through a few rolls of film in digital terms and have a few really good ones that could be considered suitable for a wall mounted picture . The camera , lens and the idea are easy to get you lost in the creative process and at the end of it you look at the images and smile . I always learn something from looking over the shoot and use those observations to inform and influence my next shoot . Since this is for personal pleasure these days , it does not eliminate the emotion one bit.

The Nikon D700 would have to be the top of my list. Firstly for the build and the same ergonomics and handling as an SLR from Nikon. Secondly, the image taken is very reminiscent of 35mm film. It's more film grain than digital noise.

@@badger67 It is a fabulous camera and I say that based on the results I have seen from it. I have struggled to maintain a light camera and flexibility of interchangeable lenses , but I find I am on occasions using my 29mm 1.8 lens on my phone more . I prime lenses are 15, 30, & 60 in MFT speak . I avoid zooms and happy to shoot 2.8 . The balance between the lens and the body needs to be just right - which will be different to each photographer . Some of the most delicious of images are from cameras I find too big or too restricted by having a fixed lens. Thinking of iconic cameras in the digital world is more difficult in many ways over the their counterparts in the film era . You suggestion would certainly make an iconic camera I think . Others may have a suggestion of their own and I would love to hear those choices . Thank you for sharing ,

Hi Robin, I'm awaiting delivery of a Lumix GF1 with 20mm F1.7, I wanted to test out M43 before I get in too deep. I looked at a number of shots online from this camera from enthusiasts using one over the past 13 years. I must say that I was quite impressed with the image quality. My daughter is arriving today with my old Canon 50D with a Sigma 10-20mm F3.5 which I am dusting off to do some landscape photography. The kit that I use today is the Canon 5D Mk iv with some great glass, but I'm really intrigued to consider moving from FF to M43. For me, it's not so much about weight, but about being able to carry more gear in a compact bag. With my current system I can carry the camera body, two zooms and 2 primes. The M43 12-100mm F4 would be an excellent lens choice for me. It would eliminate the need for two lenses. Then I could add five or six primes to the mix for a formidable setup.

Glad you are exploring Micro Four Thirds. The GF1 uses an older Micro Four Thirds sensor, I'd suggest getting the Olympus E-M5 or newer to have at least somewhat on par image quality with modern cameras! Trust me the difference is huge.

@@robinwong thanks Robin, I completely understand that. That is my ultimate plan. Actually I'm thinking more of a used E-M1 ii or Lumix G9 with a 12-100 lens. But the GF1 was given to me and that means I now have the 20mm F1.7 lens to start with. That can't be bad. I'm very open minded about the challenges of the older sensor, I have limited the ISO to 400 and will shoot in good light with that camera initially. In instances where I may need more dynamic range I'll bracket the shots. Honestly, I think the images that I've seen from the GF-1 when used in the right conditions are quite beautiful, even by today's standards. You got me thinking when I viewed your video on the E-1. BTW, I missed getting and E-1 on keh, it was listed at around $45 USD. It got snapped up in less than a day, even faster than some GF-1s and Oly Pens on that site.

@@robinwong I have an opportunity to buy an Olympus OM D EM1 mk1 body only for $290 Canadian. Since the GF1 was $0 and I now have the 20mm f1.7 do you feel that would be a better option. I’m enjoying using the GF1 for stills except in bright light.

Hi @@robinwong I had the E-M1 sold out from under me, but I managed to find another one which included an SD Card, spare battery, small carrying bag and the 14-42 Kit Zoom lens. for $420 CDN. I have to say that I enjoyed the GF-1 so much, while using it on my morning walks with the dog that I was compelled to follow your advice to upgrade a little. I've only had it for one day, but the flippy screen is a real benefit for me over my 5D Mk iv. Just now getting accustomed to the menus and camera set up. I'm sure that I won't be disappointed. If the 5D Mk iv starts to gather dust, I may just have to sell it and the lenses of to get an E-M1 Mk ii or iii and a pro lens or two.

I love these reviews of older DSLR's. I picked up a D80 for next to nothing and I love it. In fact it has the exact same ccd sensor as my other older DSLR. That being a Pentax K10D. Just love the colours and character these cameras produce.
