But singing your heart out with perfect intonation, powerful, clean, supported voice, all of this while simultaneously displaying a consistent relentless expressive stage presence… man, THAT’S something.

Your reaction is right on! I'm glad to see people listen to Elvis that have never heard him and I'm glad to see how his music resonates. I'm 57 and a huge Elvis fan, and while I love all his songs, this one is my all time favorite. It's words were relevant then and relevant now!! The writer of the song wrote it specifically for Elvis to sing, it was in response to MLK and RFK both being assassinated. Elvis had tears in his eyes in that video. I barely remember being 3 years old when this was shown on tv on his '68 Comeback Special!! This song gets me in the feels every time!!

Elvis never asked for anyone to call him the King of anything. Disc Jockeys and teenagers began calling him the King of Rock and Roll in 1957. In a press conference in 1969 someone referred to him as "the King of Rock" and he pointed to the back of the room where a great 50s entertainer, Fats Domino, was sitting and he said "Hey theres the real King of Rock" He was the first international superstar. Elvis was the largest selling artist of the 1950s, the 2nd largest selling artist of the 60s and even though he died in 1977-he was the 15th largest selling artist of the 1970s. He is in the top 3 physical album sellers of all time. (it was much harder to sell in those days-you had to leave your house, find a record store and buy your music-it was not a click away from your bedroom) In the US alone his "certified" album sales are 146.5 million. This does not count a couple hundred albums that have not reached certified RIAA levels. This also does not count his single sales in the US. Until the late 1970s the purpose of recording was to sell single 45s rpm records-not albums. Worldwide Elvis has sold over 1 billion units since 1954 including all forms of media.... 78rpms, 45 rpm singles, 45 rpm EPs, 33 1/3 albums, reel to reel tapes, 8 tracks, cassettes, and now CDs. He has more gold, platinum and multiplatinum records than any other artist. Little Richard another Goat from the 50s called Elvis: "A great integrator. He helped bring all of us black artists in the front door of white homes"

Elvis broke down barriers and opened the doors for a lot of black artists. It shouldn't have been that way, but given the atmosphere of the time... he took the music he loved and grew up singing/listening to, put his own spin on it and brought blues and rock to the masses; that is was makes him the King of Rock 'n Roll... not that he was the best or the only one, but that he was able to break barriers and spread the music. That's the same way I feel about Michael Jackson as the King of Pop. MJ never said that Elvis was an influence, but he loved James Brown, whom considered Elvis Presley his brother.

The world needs Elvis. We can share his love and passion for his fellow man, for peace for this message. Let's share his message and stand against racism. Keep sharing this song and go see the movie which shares this message too. Elvis can still impact this world by all of us joining together to share this message. I love this song. It is my favorite. Sad that people are saying Elvis was racist. He was the most NOT Racist person and wanted to unite all his brothers and sisters. Let's all join in unity and SHARE his message. God bless all people and America.

He was ostracized by the white community but continued to sing his style. Watch “Elvis and the Black Community” to see his influence in both cultures. Speaking of MJ, Elvis actually met MJ and his brothers backstage at a show in Lake Tahoe in May 1974. Michael was introduced to Elvis' daughter, Lisa Marie, then 9 yrs old, who, of course, he ended up marrying later on!! The Jackson 5 were performing the next evening at the same hotel and went to see Elvis perform.

People and fans called him The King of Rock n Roll, which he opposed to it. He said only one King.. The Man in heaven. As for Michael him n his publicity people called him the king of Pop. Huge difference. Over 40 years later he is still remembered by the world over, because his music wasn't limited to just one age group. It catered the world over for little, young and old generation...Beside the music he did a lot to break down white man's view of black music. He was the man, which made all the musicians like Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin's, Michael Jackson etc to break through with their own type of music later...Respect always to Elvis Presley. Intelligent people will learn more about this man if they research him. A one in a billion.

The face of Elvis at the end tells it all. The nation was CRYING OUT for answers. Elvis used his platform to make a DIFFERENCE. Everyone was asking WHY. WHY was MLK shot just 2 months before this taping? WHY was RFK killed DURING the production of this TV Special? Elvis lands a MONSTROUS message of hope here. THIS is what the 1960s needed upon leaving that decade of assassinations and race riots. Elvis had an amazing way to connect to every kind of person because of his PASSION. You KNOW he meant every word. Elvis was different in every good way possible. A man who tried really hard to break down walls of racism. This song is the closest he ever got to that dream. This was his personal tribute to MLK. Its no wonder James Brown, Muhammad Ali, BB King, Jackie Wilson, Sam Cooke, Sammy Davis, Medgar Evers and so many movers and shakers in the black community were either strong supporters and/or personal friends with this man. And they were friends with Elvis BEFORE HE CAME OUT SO STRONG for equality with "In the Ghetto" and this song. THEY KNEW he was real from day one when he was taught by black and white Baptist churches in the very poorest neighborhoods of his generation.

Before he was a megastar, he was dirt poor, he grew up in the ghetto, his still born twin brother was buried in a shoebox because his family could not afford a coffin... He loved rhythm and blues, because that's what he grew up with, and at a time of segregation he was looked down upon because of it because it wasn't 'white' music... Elvis was inspired by the African American community and he had no problem showing his love and appreciation
