A friend of mine was a helicopter repairman on an Aircraft Carrier in the 70's and told me that a nuclear sub that was in their fleet on an exercise came up from the depths reporting an engagement with a sea creature that left visible suction marks around the hull of the sub that were visible on its deck. The marks were in a 3 pattern triangulated configuration similar to Octopus and each suction cup mark was the size of a 55 gallon barrels diameter. Imagine that and then the size of the tentacles that would have room for that pattern to fit and then the creature they were connected to.

The men on the U boat were frantic to get on board the Brits ship and to safety and when the Caption of the U boat and many of the crew were interrogated they said the uboat had been attacked by some large squid or octums and it did physically damage the boat leaving them unable to dive and it even ripped off there deck gun and the handrails were all mangled as well.

@Picolas Cage National Geographic claims a documented 59 ft one. Scientists generally accept that they can grow much larger though, based on sucker ring scar size found on sperm whale skin. Humboltd squid are a better "sea monster" even. They are much smaller (maybe 6-10ft at most), but they hunt in packs of up to 200 individuals, can swim 20km/h, glow bright red when agitated (actually glow - luminescence), hunt near the surface at night, and if you fall off your boat they will grab you and drag you down to the depths ... and maybe eat you after you die .. .who knows. Scary tho ... especially if you are fishing at night in a small boat ...

My brother built a home & retired in Baja Sur, Mexico right on the shore of the Sea of Cortez. I spent a few months there every year. In Santa Rosalia north of Mulege there was a fleet of squid boats. During the Humbolt Squid run many of the local were employed by the fleet as deck hands. Every season at least a couple of guys would fall overboard. The boats didn't even attempt rescue because there was not enough left of the poor flucker after only a minute or two. Once while I was there they did bring in a shoe with the deck hands foot still in it. Humbolt Squid can grow to be the size of a man. When a hundred of these suckers attack at the same time, ya might as well throw yourself into a meat grinder.

I used to love wildlife documentaries and never missed them-especially the David Attenborough ones but there was always the message that the creatures shown were in mortal danger because of habitat destruction and pollution, etc. and I found them immensely depressing. I can't watch them at all now which is sad but I did become a Vegetarian and do contribute to wildlife preservation bodies whenever I can.

The Galante guy gets most of the general information he mentions right, but every so often, he misses like at 7:35 in the video. The squid & octopus won't be waving their arms around b/c they can't lift their arms vertically out of the water like we can since they lack a structure of cartilage or bone to do so. They can advance their arms by rolling them along like tank treads though and up surfaces with the suction.

The worst fact is that every of those squids that humans caught we're not even adults, just some weeks old, so imagine how big an adult is, the longer it is the weirder it looks, we don't even know how they mate so we basically could only believe this mystery will be soon found after some decades considering most of them live 1900m under the water...

Open water is my biggest fear and it’s for this exact reason. You have no idea what’s around you and whatever is around you, is way more equipped to be in there than you. I think it was Bill Burr who equated going into the ocean to walking into the Amazon rainforest with a bag on your head to obscure your vision and that’s exactly how I view the ocean.

In medieval days and afterwords, they drew sea monsters based off stories from the sailors. These sea monsters undoubtedly attacked ships and even sank some of them. I could see a giant squid grappling a ship and using its beak to gnaw through wooden planks.
