I'd rather have a solid, un-moving joint there. When it in the right place, it never needs to move again. So I put screw holes in the base 9mm (half of 18mm plywood) and countersunk them ready to take screws, and clamped the inner back fence to the outer back fence till in position, and then screwed the inner back fence to the base from underneath. You can remove the outer back fence to make it tidy after that.

Hullo young man. Simple but very effective jig, the only thing about over here (UK) is that to my knowledge there is only ne company that makes a saw that can take a dado blade charges £2800.00. A bit to heavy a cost for the DIY man as well as some small companies.
@retiredrookie7146

Let me make sure I read this right,,,,,,,,,, you guys only have one option for a saw that will take a dado set up?
@wwscott7595
4 жыл бұрын
RetiredRookie7. The majority of home Diy saws over here have the saw blade fixed direct to the motor (Brush) and do not have a soft start. All the arbors on all table saws in the U/K are 30mm diameter while the dado heads are 5/8 inch. The other thing is that the arbors are not long enough to fit dado's even if they are 30mm hole. The only company in the U/K are called Axminster Tools and they manufacture the first saw's (2) that can take a set of dado's with 30mm holes as they manufacture them as well. There are lots of legal reason's as well. I hope this answers your question.
@retiredrookie7146
4 жыл бұрын
@@wwscott7595 it answer my initial question, but brings up a few more. Like, why would there be laws against it? And what laws are they? And not trying to be insulting here, but its 2020. You would think this simple tool of the craft would be available, and accepted, all over the world? I guess as an American, I take a lot of things for granted I suppose.
@wwscott7595
4 жыл бұрын
They are not accepted in Europe as it was the EU that brought the ban in as there were to many accidents in the work place and the law (again) states that a circular saw of any kind must have a blade guard. As it has only been recently the an overhead guard is now available industry can now use these blades. As yet it has not been going long enough to call for a demand but it still also means that the saws, table or bench an arbor long enough to take them.

I'd really like to make this jig, however, it appears your using a dado blade in your table saw. My table saw does not afford me the ability to use dado blades. Is there any other way that I can do this? Does anyone have any suggestions for me? I'd greatly appreciate it 😀
@davidobrian5415
4 жыл бұрын
Great jig Katz, but here in England we are not allowed to use dado blades in our table saws, in fact our table saws can not take the. as the spindles are deliberately too short, so how about a mod to this jig for us Brits with just an access to a single, standard blade on our saws?
@katzmosestools
4 жыл бұрын
Just make the key the width of your blade. You can use this jig for any size blade.
@michaelwilwand8036
4 жыл бұрын
What’s the reasoning behind the “no dado stack” laws? Can you import a saw that takes the stack? (assuming cost is within your budget)
@davidobrian5415
4 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael. UK law determines that when the ‘Off’ switch it hit there is a minimum time in which the blade must stop rotating. A dado stack adds weight to the blade and so extra inertia that makes the stop time longer than the regulation allows. To ensure the law is complied with UK table saws do not have a long enough spindle to take the width of a dado stack.
@kauerpc
4 жыл бұрын
@@davidobrian5415 Thanks for the explanation, always wondered the reason and this makes perfect sense. I think this is actually an Europe thing, not only for UK. Multiple passes on the standard blade can work and also a similar jig with the router in a router table. Make Something has a video for that, hope that helps.

I recently made two boxes using box joints and the same type of jig. One used 1/8" fingers and the other used 1/4". I used my relatively inexpensive stacked dado for this (single blade for the smaller fingers since it's the only one I have with a square grind). In spite of the double fence, I still got a lot of tearout at the top of the cut. What could cause this? Maybe the wood, which was big box store aspen? Maybe the inexpensive blade, which hasn't been used very much? Just not sure and hoping somebody could help me out so I don't have the same problem next time. Thanks for the informational vid.
