Up to now so much of what we understand about Zuko is tied to his struggle to regain his honor. One of the many things I love about this episode is that it offers further insight into what Zuko values and seeks, and it boils down to: "Never forget who you are." He has become a banished prince, the Blue Spirit, a Fire Nation fugitive, and in this episode a nameless penniless wanderer. But inside Zuko can never let go of what he KNOWS to be true and to be his: his name, his country, and his right to the throne. Of course, a second (or rather, an extended) interpretation of Ursa's last words is: never forget who you are -- Fire Nation prince and heir, someone who never gives up without a fight, and someone who keeps trying even when he fails. This show has masterfully developed the various plotlines and characters that have influenced Zuko in such a way that cause his inner moral and identity crisis: Ozai and Azula on one end, his mother and Iroh on the other. Speaking of Azula, there is so much good Azula content in this episode too. Everyone has their favorite relationship (platonic or otherwise) on this show, and mine is Zuko and Azula. Their shared upbringing yet their different child/parent dynamics (i.e Ozai/Azula vs Ozai/Zuko and Ursa/Azula vs Ursa/Zuko and even Iroh/Zuko vs Iroh/Azula) , their personalities, and their sibling dynamic make them the most fascinating and compelling pair to me.

@@gigo518 Zuko's arc is easily the most carefully and lovingly crafted of any character I have ever seen in an animated show, and tbh I'm hard pressed to name a better one in live action either. Part of what makes it work so well is that they characterized him both personally and through his relationships with the people closest to him. And the people around him are ALSO carefully crafted and characterized in relationship to each other. The Zuko/Azula relationship isn't just a simple contrast either. They are both self-determined and shaped by their life and the world around them. It's straight up masterful - no other word for it. Also you clearly spend as much time thinking about this show as I do and I am here for it :)

My favorite part of this episode is that it shows that fire bending did not come naturally to Zuko. I would argue that his comfort with swordsmanship indicates that he is much more naturally talented with the blade. There are no points at which we see him training with swords, and there very clearly is no real training with them within the Fire Nation military, considering how much Zuko shits on them anytime they face him with his swords. There is no emphasis on his struggle to learn swordsmanship, only fire bending because that's the only kind of combat that matters to his father. Zuko is a great fire bender because he *worked his ass* off to be great at something that did not come naturally to him. I think that is an important lesson for kids that often gets skipped over a little. Just because you aren't uniquely talented at something naturally, doesn't mean you can't one day be amazing at it with hard work. Obviously, Zuko did it out of a misguided desperation to please his father, but it applies to things kids simply *want* to be good at as well.

I wonder sometimes about whether Azula has more compassionate impulses she hides under the cruelty her father cultivated. Take mocking Zuzu about what she heard. If she kept her mouth shut, Ozai might have killed Zuko as Azulon ordered, but instead she runs to Zuko and ENCOURAGES HIM TO RUN AWAY under the mask of being cruel. Azula didn’t have to turn out like she did. But she had her sociopathic tendencies cultivated by her father while she was emotionally rejected by her mother who saw too much of her husband in her daughter.

Wicker 2 no evidence that the psychopathic abusive dad would try to turn his prodigy daughter into another psychopath? Wow, who could have thought that would happen? Also if azula hadn’t told Zuko, he would have just been taken out in the middle of the night with no warning. And telling Zuko would only create complications for Ozai. She knew this, yet she told Zuko. Every single bit of development we see from her depicts her childhood of abuse and neglect, and you wonder how she turned out to be the way she is.

Why IS Azula like this? A lot of people say it's because she was just born evil, but... kids say what they hear, and they learn from their parents. From how proud Ozai is of Azula, they clearly spend a lot of time together, and Azula is clearly used to listening in on things she's not supposed to. I think we're meant to imply a lot about Ozai from how Azula speaks, and I think she gets her attitude from him, too.
@singingwolf8997
2 жыл бұрын
To be fair, there have been plenty of people raised lovingly who later turned out to be sociopaths, psychopaths, sadists, etc. And there have been literal children who have done purely evil things. For example, if I recall correctly, one of the youngest serial killers in history was a mere 8 years old, and acted of his own accord. So it's not entirely impossible that Azula was just born this way. Sure, her father's influence didn't help. But I don't think Ozai was the only reason she was the way she was.

We also get to see something here regarding Zuko's skillset. He was never naturally talented with Firebending like Azula, so he put more focus into martial arts and swordplay to offset his weakness. This comes back into play during one of the bigger fights later in the series that I won't dare spoil for you.

My head canon has always been that Ozai wasn't an evil guy, just ambitious, but this pushed him over the edge, the loss of his wife bc his dad was evil and his son dun goofd. so with that it makes sense Ozai goes to his wife like omg my dad is going to execute our son, shellshocked, and Ursa plots with him to assassinate Azulon. That's why Ozai then sounds bitter saying "your mother did terrible things" (kind of implying Ursa might have seduced Azulon to get close enough)

I think you were assuming Azula was joking (at least at first, you kinda wondered later on in the discussion if she was lying) which is interesting, because I assumed she was telling the truth when I first watched. I won’t say what happened or if she was lying or not, because they make it clearer later, and I don’t want to confirm if any of your theories are true before the show. When I first watched it, because I assumed she was truthful, I was very confused, though on something completely different than you. Because, if Azula was telling the truth... why the fuck was she telling the truth? That’s something that really stumped me when I watched. If this is true... Why would she tell Zuko? Why not just... not? You could say to mock him about it, to rub it in, but like... Is that worth potentially warning him? What if Zuko really DID believe her and managed to hide or run? I really didn’t get it. Is taunting really worth that? It almost made me think she used to care about Zuko (in her own fucked up way), and this really WAS her way of warning him, but even just saying that made me sound insane, because if she’s hunting him down, and smiling at his scarring, she clearly stopped caring at the very least, if she ever even did. Maybe she was just young and didn’t think about the risk, maybe she knew he wouldn’t believe her... or maybe she really was making a fucked up joke. It’s something that stumped me. There’s a lot of stuff to chew on, this ep, when you first watch and with context you get later. I really don’t get Azula here, though. Gosh, this was hard to write without spoiling. If I showed too much of my hand, mods, tell me and I’ll edit it. Also! I thought it was interesting you theorized about Ty Lee getting bullied, but here we see MAI getting bullied. It actually makes a lot of sense, though. Ty Lee said NO to Azula at first, which most wouldn’t do with their bully. She knew Azula would mess with her once Azula said that she would come to her show, or at least she feared it, given her gasp, but the fact that she had hope that Azula would leave before then shows that she considered them friends at least somewhat. In the end, Ty Lee only said yes when she realized Azula would keep messing with her until she did. Mai, on the other hand, has NEVER argued against Azula, even when it meant giving up her brother. Almost like she knew the consequences of such a thing, or showing emotional vulnerability in general. We see Azula use Zuko against her the moment she shows attachments him, is she really above using Tom-Tom against her? Mai doesn’t argue, and she doesn’t give indication of her affection, which really makes sense with what we see in this ep.

He used it as his fake name when traveling with Iroh before this episode - they went by Lee and Mushi with the family that treated Iroh for making tea from a poisonous plant (although Iroh said they should call Lee Junior). If anything, the significance here is that it would have seemed unusual if Zuko used his usual fake name when it's the same as the kid's, so he was caught off guard and ends up not telling them his name at all until the big "remember who you are" scene.

There no "Azula alone" episode but if you want, I can give you my analysis about "what's wrong with this child". Be careful it will be a essay write in English by a A2 level French girl. In my comment on the episode 3 of the season 2, I already speak about how favoritism make appear in the "better" child a complex of superiority, abusive comportements on the "wrong" child and the fear to lose this privileged place to the "rival" and be in the abused position so as this comment will be long enough, I will pass. First, if Zuko is the son of his mom despite all he try to be, Azula is the daughter of her father. And we can see there, the parents have radically opposite values for the education. For Ozai, it's all "power and loyalty to the power (and to him) " and for Ursa it's more "love and kindness". Zuko and Azula are stuck between them and have to choose. And yes, to us the choice is very easy but if we pose the problem in different words? You're a little kid and you have to choose not between two ideology but between your mom and your dad, which one you will make proud of you and which one you will disappoint because you will not be able to satisfy both of them. Add to that, if Azula did something "wrong" to our perception, Ursa will call her to order, but for this same thing, Ozai will congratulate her and it the same for Zuko: where one parent is happy, the other isn't. It's very confusing for a child because after, he don't know what is "good" and what is "bad", because the possessors of the Absolute Verity and models of morality aka the parents, don't agree on the question. So what doing the child? He choses what is least limiting for him and listen the parent who support the child the most, don't really listening anymore the other parent. And for Azula, it's her father. Azula has fragility in her mind who are accented by her environment. First, she is a princess. Not THE princess but still a member of the royal family of the nation who crush the world and who is a absolute monarchy. There almost nobody who can be beyond her in the authority level. She's on the top of the pyramid and she know it. Next, the history of her country. They doing a fucking genocide, and the children learn in school than this horror and the war mean greatness, that they are superior to everybody else, the national Hero is basically Hitler and Azula is his great-granddaughter. Next, the education in a more intimate sphere: children have to learn empathy because isn't innate and Azula didn't. Why? Because to Ozai, empathy = weakness, because when your country conquer the world, empathy isn't a trendy value (burn a city to the ground haha so fun) and because Ursa, the model who could teach this to Azula, is constantly strict to her and seems to favorite Zuko, her rival. Maybe Ursa doesn't. Maybe she did. After all, Ozai did. Why Ursa should be different? Why Azula should trying again and again to gain the approbation to her mother when she easily have the one of her father? When Zuko who is weaker seems to have it even when he mess up? When Azula don't have it when she doing thing perfectly? This all will push Azula in Ozai control. And Ozai don't want a daughter or a son. He want weapons. Tools. Like he says, "Father, I'm your humble servant, *USE* me" that say a lot about his vision of family. And Azula is a very effective tool, where Zuko isn't. What Azula see from her father as love for her is just love for her capacity. So to keep this "love", she has to be always perfect, to be the best, to be the one who dominate. Ty Lee can't doing amazing acrobatics when Azula fall when she doing a cartwheel, when Azula doing a amazing performance before all the royal family and the Fire Lord himself, Zuko has to fail to everybody see that Azula is the best child and the one who deserve love. She's the one who's born lucky, and Zuko is the one who's lucky to be born. But in the royal hierarchy, Zuko is beyond Azula because he's older. And she can't accept that. Why a accident of birth make her under him even she's better? Why does he have the unconditional support of thir mom dispite to be the wrong child when she has only reprimand from her dispite to be the better child? Why does he have from uncle Iroh, the Dragon of West, a noble knife when she have only a silly doll? Azula should be the older, Azula should be the one that Ursa support and Azula should have this knife. But no. And it's unfair. Zuko has to paid for that. He has to learn his place. Azula. Is. On. The. Top. To understand the Azula's issue, there are to focus on her models. Ozai and Azulon. Ursa loves Zuko more, Iroh is in disgrace (and daddy Ozai, he's the greatest!), we don't know her relationship with her cousin but there are a hight probability that she see him like just "on her way" or a rival. So the model are Ozai and this one have for model Azulon. Azulon was the son of Sozin (the guy who started the war) so big pressure on shoulder. He was also a war leader who was going on the front. As Iroh was. As Ozai isn't. Ozai only see the war on maps and reports, it's really dehumanizing. He don't know the price for the war, the sacrifice for the power. Contrary to Iroh who make his own life experience on the battlefield, Ozai only see the result of a life on the top of the power (didn't really know how translate my idea, I hope it's clear), and not what it has to sacrifice to obtain this ultimate power and authority. When he has obtained the crown, Ozai didn't go out to fight but order the war remotely from his palace in the shadow, increasing like that his power. And it's this model that Azula (and Zuko) has, the sparkle and inborn power who belong to you. There not good or bad, except what you decide. The side you choose deserve it because you make this choice. You're the Fire Lord, what you choose is, by definition, is right. After than Ursa left, Ozai was in charge and the only model for his child. There were no higher authority than him and he has already choose a heir, a favorite. Azula was better than any other, better than Zuko. Her only duty was to please her father. Her superiority complex was growing and nobody stop it. She finally was the better child for everybody who count, as the woman who was once call her mother, this treator who chose the family failure on her and try to make growing weakness in Azula is away, nobody call Azula when she doing something wrong. They don't have the power to doing this. Azula is a prodigy and have see the admiration in the eye of her father, this great man who dispite to be the second born, put himself on the top, on the throne. She is a warrior and a strategy by nature and don't want lose this admiration so adopt the Ozai's values so she can please him always more. Azula as teenager still herself: a true prodigy of firebending, able to generate flame of a *unmatchable* purety, flame able to slice rock, using only her finger when other firebender have to use the palm or the fist, she want the throne like her father doing before, but contrary to Ozai, this crown is already promised to her because Zuko is in disgrace. She doesn't fight to gain something but to not lose what she has. Azula know than if the Avatar brings back the peace, she will never have this crown to every nations obey. The power is was is the most precious, if she can't have it, what would remain? Is this light of admiration would be stay in her father's eye if her power turn out... *useless* ? She follows the path of Ozai who himself follows the one of Azulon. Azulon? Azula? She has to support the comparison until her own name. Azula is crazy. Azula is mean. But Azula was as mistreat as Zuko, but in a different way.

This is an amazing analysis is Azula. I totally agree with what you said, and you clearly thought deeply about it. Azula will be messed up for the rest of her life because of Ozai. Also, you have an incredibly vast English vocabulary.

@@dawn8293 Thank you, I working with wordreference when I don't know. ^^ *SPOILER ALERT* Two of my favorite moments of Azula are during The comet of Sozin. The first is when Ozai is on the point to start going burn the Earth Kingdom to the ground. He's smiling as he walks to the balloon but just when he's realising that Azula is just at his side and she can shadow him, he's stop smiling and order to her to staying in the Fire Nation without even looking her. And it's the only time we can see 3 things: the only time that Azula will be agains her father and her fear to be just another Zuko ("You can't treat me like this. You can't treat me like Zuko!"), the only time of thee girl who has manipulate everyone around her be manipulated ("You're the only one I can trust with this. _Really?"_Of course my dear.), and the fact that Azula has sacrifice everyone who could have a little of affection for her to a father she never have. And she is smart. When she realizes that the crown that she want the most don't make her happy, that nobody look at her with admiration, that her beloved father left her like a old sock, that she can't trust anybody, that on the top on the pyramid of power we are alone, that it's her own choices who sentence her to this, that all what she believes in is false or unimportant... She can't accepting that and so has breaking. This what symbolize her mother in the mirror. Her mom has always saying the truth that Azula don't want hear.

Wow, great analysis like Dawn said, and your English is pretty good :) One thing I want to question, is empathy not innate? I thought empathy was one of those things most people were naturally born with to some degree
@marieguillou8808

@@lostotter1956 Thanks! ^^ It's true that everybody empathize at some degree. Even Azula does (Ember Island "Let's go, this place is depressing"). But we still have to learn it at young age. When we wanting something or doing something and don't think about other, I'm sure that sentences like "Look at him, seem he happy/fun to you?", "Why do you doing that to him?" or "Do you like that somebody doing that to you" sound familiar. Everybody hear it when we was toodlers and in the majority of case, the answer to this questions was "No, he isn't happy/pleased", "I don't know, I just do it" or "Because I want this" , "No, I wouldn't like if he does that to me". As social animal, we have empathy capacity, but as human beings, we still have to learn it.

Azula is a psychopath. It’s a mental condition where the victim can’t really experience empathy. They usually seem very charming and fun, but are very manipulative. Usually they are very good at scheming and planning. Azula showed signs of this in the flashbacks of this episode.

i think with azula, its like her mom saw that her father favorited her so her mom in turn favored zuko and somewhat neglected azula. (like how fucked up would it be to hear your mom say "what is wrong with that child" about you, just because you're acting out) then azula is only getting attention from her father who only gives her his approval when she is perfect and like him. shes so fucked up because she never got the love that zuko got from his mom.
