There is another important “mod” all GM/Chrysler owners must do: *DISABLE* Active Fuel Management/Displacement On Demand/Dynamic Fuel Management.

Good recommendation, bro. The catch can has become ESSENTIAL for any engine with GDI. If you’re running without one, all the blow-by that’s ventilated back to your intake by the PCV valve will carb up the backside of your intake valves. If you have port fuel injection (PFI), this is not an issue because the fuel injectors are located in the intake manifold just behind the intake valves. Thus, gasoline sprayed from port injectors act as a solvent which prevents the PCV gases (oil, fuel, and water vapours) from building up on the valve stems. Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engines don’t have this benefit because the injectors are placed directly inside the combustion chamber, so no gasoline touches the backside of the intake valves to wash them. Now, you might be asking yourself why manufacturers changed from port to direct injection if GDI carbs up your cylinder heads? Well, there are three reasons. First, PFI wasn’t terribly efficient and couldn’t meet ever stricter emission standards. GDI was not only more efficient with a more complete fuel burn, but it also led to increased power output as well. A win-win you might say. But problems with this fuel delivery system began to rear its ugly head early on, once a GDI equipped engine reaches about 30,000 miles. Sluggish performance, poor gas mileage, hard starting and rough idle are all symptoms of carbed up heads. To answer your question about what the white stuff is in the bottom of the catch can, that’s water. Gasoline has a considerable amount of water in it. Also, humidity in the very air that the engine breathes also has water vapour in it. The catch can traps this heavy particulate. And when water mixes with oil vapours, you get whip cream (the white stuff you see). That’s all whip cream is - just water, oil, and flavouring (vanilla, coconut, etc) whipped at high speed. Don’t believe me? Go to the supermarket dairy or freezer section. Read the ingredients on a can or tub of Cool Whip, Reddi-Whip, or Dream Whip and it will list water, kelp oil (seaweed), and flavour extracts as their core ingredients. Your engine makes whip cream all the time, especially if you do a lot of start and stop city driving because the engine never really gets hot enough to burn off all the water vapour trapped in the engine. That’s why it’s very common to see this whip cream underneath your oil filler cap (hot water vapour rises to the top of your engine). It’ll have a frothy, chocolatey colour and consistency, kinda like pudding. A catch can will help reduce this condensation as well. Keep up the good work! All the best!

GDI really didn’t lead to much more power and they’re actually less efficient from a mpg standpoint. Just checking epa ratings of c6 vs c7 corvettes, 2011 mustang 5.0 vs 2018+ 5.0, or the 2009-2015 Camaro LS3/L99 (99 is the automatic with 395-400 hp), vs the 2016+… These mpg’s on DI engines from Germany and Korea have only gained a whopping 1 mpg improvement. Worthless. Same for the gearing increase with 8 spd, 9 spds and 10 spds,

Yes. Any mod to your engine after about 2016 will cause red flags. Tunes, CAI, etc unless it’s a manufacturer upgrade. Cracking the ECU for a tune is actually a violation of federal law and manufacturer law. Big no-no and now with hey Brandon let’s go, the kid sniffer/toucher in charge in the east, gas/diesel engines are gone by 2025.

The latest DI LT1 engines do not need a catch can as long as you run the recommended Dexos2 oil and change it frequently. Plenty of pictures on the internet of disassembled LT1s with clean intake valves. Now if you have a BMW, yea those are a mess.
@ericoconnell7581
3 жыл бұрын
That’s simply GM blowing smoke up your ass. If anything, the VERY thin DEXOS2 oils (0W20-40) are actually contributing to the problem. Tests are showing that the thinner the oil at operating temperature, the more blow-by gases that are created and MUST be mitigated by a catch can before they reach the intake. GM just doesn’t want to go the expensive route of retooling the relatively new Gen V LT1 for a dual delivery system (PFI and GDI) like Ford’s Coyote engine.

This echoes exactly what I've been told by a very experienced service manager at a respected dealership here in SoCal. I had a 2017 SS and had a Mishimoto installed early on. The damn lines bled oil and the line in and out plastic connectors also leaked. I substituted quality aluminum connectors I got thru McMaster-Carr. Mishimoto sent me new lines and after a time even those bled. Did it help? Not so sure. As Paul points out, there are numerous pics showing no long term degradation of the valves from gunk buildup out there. Does it void the warranty? Never had to find out and Chevrolet won't give specifics on the question. I sold that car and bought a 2021 LT1 this past October. I do not plan to put a catch can on the new car. I put few miles on my cars so I think I'll be OK. When I sold my 2017 SS it had 9600 miles on it. Don't ask why I sold it... it was an unwise decision on my part. If you plan to drive your Camaro LT1 engined vehicle a lot, a catch can may be a wise choice. If you're unlikely to put a lot of miles on it, it may be a waste of money. I believe that the LT4 supercharged motors in the ZL1 cannot accept a catch can and seem to do just fine. If you're convinced it's worthwhile, do it but look at all the available catch cans out there. Cheers!

@diontay2720

They all have the V8 6.2L DI engine... the LT1 gives you the engine of the 1SS/2SS but without the amenities as them such as the sunroof, leather seats, upgraded sound system (bose), and the upgraded 8in’ screen compared to the 7in’ screen in the LT1, the heads up display, cluster gauge style... Now unless you purchase the RS Package option, you will get all those but the leather seats, heads up display, and the SS cluster gauge style.
