Actual supply shortages and consumer demand drove prices through the roof. This gave manufacturers a thirst for higher profits that came along with it. They are trying to "OPEC" the auto market by artificially slowing supply so the demand, thus the price, stays the same. Unfortunatly for them, trucks aren't oil, and they will eventually see the market disturbed because of competition. Additionally, they are passing their company's failures in terms of cost (recalls and poor build quality) on to the consumer instead of fixing the root of the problem. Shutting down factories and laying off folks is certainly a sure fire way to kill productivity and motivation to provide top notch build quality.

My f-150 supercrew has the short 5.5' or whatever it is bed and basically that is the longest truck I could get and still be able to put it in my garage since I have about 2 inches front and back with the garage door down. While I would love a longer bed so I could pick up lumber and stuff without it hanging over the tailgate I have actually just gotten used to bringing my horse trailer when I am picking up bigger items. Not only is it a little over a foot of the ground in the back but it has 13 feet of flat floor and I can just throw whatever back there and unless the thing is tall and I am afraid it could tip over I just close the door and drive off. I also agree with Worst #3 as we fell victim to premature DFM lifter failure in our '21 Silverado 5.3 at 585 miles. I bought a nice car in which to travel with my family so I don't need that in my truck*. I needed a truck to - well - - BE A TRUCK! I needed a long bed, standard cab, 4 wheel drive pickup truck. I did not need heated leather seats and surround sound. (I will admit a camera would have been nice but I bought an after-market unit that suffices for my needs). Trucks like I wanted have proved to be scarcer than hen's teeth. I ended up buying a (very well used) 2013 Chevy work truck. It's low enough that I can reach over the bed sides, easily climb in and out, and the 4.3 liter six cylinder engine yields pretty good fuel economy and all the torque I need. I do not tow much or often but I haul a lot of lumber in the bed (and mulch, and manure, and rocks, etc...). I have crank-up windows and a really terrible radio but who cares? I just want a nice two door Ford F150 Lightning, or Colorado ZR2, or Ram 2500 Rebel. I understand why going all 4 door is a thing, it creates more consistency in manufacturing, fewer parts variety, and those things reduce costs overall, but it clearly reduces variety in options available for buyers who don't need all 4 doors. I shouldn't have to buy a Ram 3500 just to get a two door truck (don't argue semantics like 'well technically you can get such n such 2 door that's cheaper' smartass).

GM has had reliability issues with teh 5.3 since 2007 at least. I had a 2007 Yukon XL and at 36k it started burning a qt of oil every 1000 miles then at 96k I though the cam broke. My mechanic flushed the engine and told me the cylinder deactivation was a known issue causing sludging. I was religious with changing the oil with Mobil1 every 5k. I loved the truck I looked into buying a crate engine and it was so bad GM didn't offer the 5.3 for the 2007-2009 models. From what I have read it's better now but still happens but not as often. When I had a head gasket start to leak I traded it in for a 2014 Ram 1500 Bighorn that I still have and love! It's been the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned so far breaking 112k last week.

Some early commercial diesel engines from 100 years ago had cylinder deactivation. This makes me think there was a simple mechanical solution to making cylinder deactivation. I'll be much more interested if modern car cylinder deactivation engines can have the same reliability as non-cylinder deactivation engines.

@@dr.x4050 Back in 1980, Cadillac offered the HT4100, 4.1L V8 that featured 4-6-8 cylinder deactivation. It was one of the least reliable GM engines in history and the only way to make it somewhat reliable was to dig into the engine and replace the cylinder heads to get rid of that crap. Thankfully they only offered it in the 1981 model year and then discontinued it.

I am concerned with so much electronics being in work trucks and off-road vehicles. More things to go wrong and leave you stranded. I’ve driven old Jeeps through fender deep water with very few modifications with no problems. I’ve heard too many stories of issues with newer vehicles not surviving much lower fording depths. Also, love my 2011 Xterra but, electronic x-fer case shifting is a horrible idea. I’ve had several sensor issues that shut down the 4wd system. Not safe when deep off-road in the winter. My old Willy’s was all manual. Not an issue, ever, engaging 4wd. Had to manually hold in 4hi once due to shifter out of adjustment but try that with electric engagement!

The current truck prices are ridiculous. For comparison, in 1983 F150 cost $8000 which would be about $23 000 in todays money. Now new one is twice that and for $23k you get 10 year old F-150 with 100 000 miles. That's just absurd.

My big questions is how does a truck that is largely the same for 2023 cost that much more when there is no more value in the truck than what was delivered in 2016. What do I get for an $18k price increase other than worse reliability than I previously had because of all the supplier changes due to Covid?

I think the cooling excuse for tall hoods is nonsense and tall hoods are really just a styling exercise. Modern radiators are cross flow, just reduce the need to make tall front ends by making radiators wider and by tilting them like was done in C3-C7 corvettes. The tow rating on new trucks are ridiculously high with almost no obvious caveats from the dealers. While these products CAN tow the rated weight, unless the trailer, hitch and trailer brakes are matched well to the truck, your trip may not turn out well. I think that many of us have seen this mismatch swaying down the road and avoid it for no other reason than that you don't want to be the 1st responder to this potential disaster. Because you know that behind the wheel sits a guy that thinks that all is well in spite of the fact that the rruck can hardly be held within 1 lane. Afterall, the dealer said that the truck will tow that weight with "no problem".

Everyone arguing over pricing needs to check out the CPI calculator and compare the REAL price increase. Today’s base model trucks aren’t that much more today than 10+ years ago. But you get a hell of a lot more with it. More power, more capable, way safer, better MPG, better technology, better ride. You have the choice of optioning out the truck north of $80k if you so desire. The half ton class trucks are just as capable as 3/4 ton trucks of 20 years ago. All the truck classes have basically moved up a tick. The new ranger is nearly the same as an older F-150.

All that is why I'm keeping my 03 silverado. It's not a 4x4 unfortunately though so far I've managed to not get stuck on ranches. Clearance is my only issue since Texas hill county ranches have a lot of rocks that like to hit things under the truck, I wish I could lift it a couple inches but can't with this truck. Only other thing I'd like is a Camara for hooking up trailers, my rear tag is bent in all directions from having to do it alone in tight spaces and uneven ground. All that other new tech doesn't interest me one bit and just means dollar signs for repairs down the road since I drive my vehicles until they die. And with current prices even for base models who wants to use a truck for the tool it's supposed to be and tear it up years before you've even paid it off? Mine got hit by a baseball sized hail storm two years ago, beat the truck up pretty bad, shattered the windshield and the plastic pieces like bug shield and window rain shields. Other than the windshield I didn't care, it's paid for and twenty years old. The people I know with new trucks and cars hated it and had to get them fixed some got written off as totaled from the hail damage, just the cost of the windows exceeded value on two people's cars I know and those were late model cars. Then their insurance went up for getting repairs. Not everything new is better or worth the price tags.

I read the book, measured and placed the trailer stickers as needed to calibrate the system and entered the trailer size and backing up the old fashioned do it yourself way is 1000 times easier then try turning the backup pro assist knob. I bought from the dealer lot. If I ever were to order another new truck that would be avoided next time. If you're going to put a backup camera on the tailgate make sure it is at least usable when the tailgate is down. Passengers sitting in the cab shouldn't be able to max out the payload, either shorten the cab to fit less people or increase the payload ratings.
