I remember buying Wintuck and Sayelle when I started crocheting. Sure brings back memories. Once in a while we get some donated to the prayer shawl ministry at church. I love seeing the old price tags. Not only the prices but the stores that sadly closed decades ago. It's a trip down memory lane.

❤ Love love love Dazleaire yarn!! I have a twin sized Afghan that my Grandma made with dazzleaire yarn 48 YEARS AGO!! It's still just as soft and snugly as it was the day she gave it to my mom. Grandma also made a king size single crochet ripple Afghan using Dazzleaire yarn. I have a hope chest full of vintage yarn. Most of it was sold before the invention of barcodes. Some of the labels say they're made from dupont dakron , acrylic and some of them have priced tags of 47 cents on them. 😊

What a wonderful flashback for this 70 year old crochet girl! UPC's were brought into use in the early 70's. If the band doesn't have one, more than likely the yarn was made prior to that. I made a long vest out of that Red Heart Autumn Leaves in the early 70's! Loved it!!

Both companies used the small green tags years ago. You actually did great on your Vintage yarn! Love all the Vintage Colorways too, but I love varigated. Thank you for sharing. ❤🥰🙏🏻❤️

W.T. Grant was the Walmart of it’s day. That store sold everything. My Gramma would go there to buy a new hat to wear to church. My brother and I would by ourselves to look at the fish and tiny turtles in the Pet Department. They had a lunch counter too. (We never ate there. We would eat lunch at home.)

Grants was a 5 & dime type store. . Grant, also known as Grants, was a chain of mass-merchandise stores in the United States that operated from 1906 to 1976. The stores were typically variety stores located in downtown areas. At its peak, Grants had 1,074 stores across the country. However, the company began to experience difficulties in the early 1970s when the economy slowed down. Grants' credit arrangements, which offered small loans with no credit checks and short repayment terms, became a liability rather than an asset. In late 1975, Grants filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and closed hundreds of stores. In early 1976, a federal judge ordered the company to close its remaining 359 stores within two months, and Grants ceased operations.

Spectacular finds! In Norway when you acquire something from someone who is no longer around they say "they turned in their slippers" now every time I find something in the thrift store that quite clearly came from someone estate I always say "this person turned in their slippers and I am going to finish their work".

99 cents for a skein in the early 1970's wasn't exactly cheap to us back then. If you were very very lucky, you could make $1.50 per hour so you had to work 2/3rds of a whole hour of your day to buy that skein of yarn. But a lot of people made less than that per hour so you could be looking at working for at least a whole hour 's worth of work for a single skein.

Our knitting/crochet group often work with donated yarn that is no longer sold. We pair it up with similar weight yarn or double it with white or black yarnd to increase thickness. The sad part is when years of poor storage caused fibers to breakdown or mold/cigarette smells. No choice but to bag and dispose such beautiful textures and colors. Our finished items go to various charities so these decisions are deemed necessary....sigh... My favorite so far was Canadian primary color yarn that was incredibly soft but sportweight. Doubled it with solid black yarn and crochet extra long multi-colored scraves. I hope they enjoyed them ❤

I can remember seeing the Dazzleaire yarn at Kmart all the time back in the late 70s to early 80s . It's funny that i never bought yarn back then but loved looking at it and feeling it in the store...lol. i think i was too poor because at the time i was divorced and raising my son by myself and didn't have the luxury of extra money to buy other stuff than paying for nesecaties. The 2nd orange skein, the 'Tangerine ' color, was I think, the name brand of the yarn my mom used to knit my baby brother a baby blanket with. He was born in 1966!!...lol. (He's 10ys younger than me!) I think my favorite Dazzleair yarn back in the 70s was the one that's your favorite, too! I loved the varigated yarn! I believe that way back when Bernat was on their own, they were somewhat a higher end yarn company. Usually more expensive and wasn't sold at Kmart, if i remember right.

I have an afghan that I've been working on for 40 years or so. It's the Caron Dazzle in a variegated green. I got it at Schultz department store for $1.17 a skein. I had stopped working on it because I had made a mistake. I finally frogged it back to my mistake, which isn't easy with that yarn. I will finish it one day. It's a ripple and I love it.

The price sticker on the purple Caron yarn is from a Roses dept. store, I'm pretty sure. They used to be the 5 & dime stores back in the day. When I was a kid (early 70's), the Roses in our area had a great yarn/sewing section; that my mamaw loved! But sadly, they did away with that section years ago. We still have the store. But they are smaller now, & the item quality isn't great anymore. Great memories though. And great yarn back then, too. ❤

Looking through that vintage yarn is so interesting! I have an entire box of a lavender Brunswick yarn, along with a half-finished knitted blanket that my aunt was working on before she passed many years ago. It was given to me because I was the most proficient with crochet and knitting... but they couldn't find the pattern she was using. I'm lost with complex knitting if I don't have a pattern. I've spent many nights over the years trying to find the pattern on various databases, ebay, and etsy. Found bits and pieces that I recognized, but never the full pattern all together. One of these days I'll find it, at least I really hope so!
