both :) Also, need to add the XSR900 to the mix just to further confuse us all. FTR is just such a cool looking bike, have you seen FortNine's review of the FTR?

The MT09 is better value for money for sure, and Yamaha make awesome bikes.. But I wouldn't turn around to look at the Yamaha after parking it in my garage. That's the difference.

I have an mt-09 and totally agree haha. They are a pretty amazing bike for the money though. Especially with all the rider modes etc. A person could literally get one as their first bike and just so long as they had the basics and self control drive mode 4 is shockingly tame.

Yikes there is $7450 price difference between the MT09 and FTR Carbin. I'd probably go with the base model FTR which is cheaper. MT09 is probably best naked for the price, but not fan of the headlight.

If i only had enough to buy a mt09 sp id be perfectly happy with it cuz your not really looking at it while you ride. But if i had enough to get the ftr carbon.. thats the 1 thats got my eye and id be proud to look at and ride. Probably het more random people saying sweet bike to the ftr too. They just killed it with the styling. If i was still 20 id go mt09 sp no question prolly put a turbo on it too lol but now being a dad of 3. I think id make better choices and just enjoy the ride more at slightly slower speeds on the ftr.

I think the main reason that the FTR is more expensive than something like the Yamaha MT-09 is the fact that the MT-09 is built overseas with less expensive labor and the FTR is built here in the US at the Spirit Lake, Iowa factory and mostly by hand. Yamaha makes an amazing bike but I prefer the less refined, visceral, raw feeling of the FTR and how it feels almost like a muscle bike than anything else.

I just bought a 2023 FTR carbon a couple months ago, I just walked into the Indian dealer and I had no idea what it was but it called my name. The carbon fiber with the color of the Ohlins suspension, the bike makes you kinda itch and tweak to ride it. 20 minutes after I first saw it, I was buying it. there's so many aftermarket mods you can put on it to make it better and go even faster. I deleted the rear fender and Christmas light turning signals with something more inconspicuous, Then I slapped a quick shifter on and then a full Toce low mount exhaust (without baffles of course) with a Loydz Garage tune and I swear to all that is holy that I have the baddest and meanest bike on the road in California.

I'm also willing to bet insurance will be a bit cheaper for the FTR. Far less of those on the road and barely any of them get found pulling wheelies or running from the cops like the MT-09 is famous for.

If you are a specs/budget guy, mt09 all day. If you go based on feel and how a motorcycle speaks to you, it's a toss up. FTR speaks to me in more of my passion. Also, your wheelie skills are insane. I'm way too scared to get to the balance point or beyond. Mine are wimpy and i'll keep it that way.

I thought a quick shifter was supposed to allow you to bang the next gear without letting off the gas. I noticed that the way you shifted on the MT-09 is the same as how I shift my 2019 FTR. No clutch, let off a little, and select the next gear, but I don't have a quick shifer.
@2kanchoo

To shift up you have to be on the gas at least 15%. So he could at full throttle if he wanted to. To downshift have to be off the gas all the way.

Love the FTR! So much more torque and with a tune, you can really make it run. I'd take the FTR any day, 2023 or newer. It feels a lot more Hooligan and rowdy. I do wish there was a stock quickshifter. It's also east to get 150 mph just by killing the speed limiter. It's just rough and rowdy for sure compared to the MT-09.

I’d say the MT09, ftr is heavier, and REALLY quick. There’s rain mode, but I think the Nanny’s on the MT are a big help to newbies between power adjustment, wheelie control (selectable levels), abs control, and traction ctrl . I have the FTR but it’s my 2nd bike, I was close to choosing the MT, but that FTR was beautiful inside and out.
@2kanchoo
3 ай бұрын
If you have self control the mt-09 yes. Put it in drive mode 4 (rain mode) and it pulls power and throttle response enough you could learn on it. Plus it's so light super easy to handle. The problem is most people don't have self control or overestimate their abilities too soon and would crank it up. Full on the bike is stupid fast. Even with wheelie control maxed on mode 1 (full power) you can't full brap it or you're front tire is going in the sky.

I’ve owned Both. The FTR has more character and is more visceral and raw. Bikes aren’t about spec sheets. They are about how they make u feel. This is why the FTR wins for me. I tried a 2023 XSR 900 for mine with no regrets.

MT09, like the XSR900 (prior to the updated model XSR900), isn't a true 900cc engine, but an 847cc. My XSR900 is the 2017 model and a blast to ride. After three years of ownership - being second owner - I'm now mulling over if it's time to let her go? It's just a shame the OEM exhaust for the XSR900 is so damned heavy (20 or so pounds). It's definitely a city bike and not one for long sustained commuter journeys, as the exhaust note of an after market exhaust will eventually kill your eardrums.
