With your help, your giving me a much more discerning eye than I formerly had. As I get through my repairs and tuning I will be more aware of inconsistency in the action this way. Warmest regards.

That piano must have been really frustrating to play before you fixed these issues.

The customer didn't actually complain about any of the issues so I'm not sure if they noticed. It's a piano that is in a waiting area for a few piano studios so it probably doesn't really get played that much.

My piano has a similar issue, but it's not this dire. However mine has a missing string, buzzing sounds on some of the keys and some of the dampers don't really work properly. I'm sure it was neglected and abused (some of the keys look like a heavy object fell on them at some point, or a small kid just bashing the keys). I'm going to get it restored, but after I get my mortgage and my car, you know how it goes. I had a tuner tell me to throw it in the skip, but now I'm vindicated. I would like to see it fixed. 0:51 Oh, yes. Mine does that. Yup, familiar frustration.

Tq for the detailed knowledge of the different possibility in "sticky key". Just got an old, well kept , unused & upright stand piano which has very much the similar issues. Will be attempting a "DIY" first time. Thanks again for the encouragement & Peace be with you.

My hammer is not falling back but I can see the wire you are talking about. It is not broken. Is there anything else that could be causing the hammer to not fall back down?
@howardpianoind

It is most likely that the pin that connects the hammer butt to the hammer butt flange is too tight.

Do you happen to have a picture of this entire piano? I found it in the garbage. It seems to work decently well. It is missing it’s upper casing and I would like to try and re make one the looks close to original unfortunately I haven’t been able to find pictures of this specific one online.

Unfortunately I don't have any photos. This is a piano I was working on that I was tuning for a customer. It was in a YMCA.

How do you fix the back check non-returning issue? I have this problem but cannot currently hire a repairman to fix it.

@@howardpianoind I fixed it! It was a tight pin and probably weak spring. Sorry I struggled with the nomenclature, but your videos helped a ton!

@@howardpianoind I was able to strike with the hammer, but the hammer would not return. Slowly it would come back into place (2nd and 3rd strikes would produce little to no sound). So I lubricated the pin and stretched the spring a tiny bit. Best I could do, given the circumstances.
@howardpianoind

The lubrication will help some, but it’s likely that the pin is too tight in the flange and may need to be repinned if you can’t get the problem resolved.

Garhhh. Why do people put up how-to videos where the main take-away is “As you can see here, you can’t actually see what I’m pointing the camera at and trying to explain!”???
