Bro people saying it's Jeters ball because "SS has priority" are so simple. Why would SS have priority here? Momentum is taking him away from any possible follow up play, and ARod is already under the ball. SS priority just a weird rule of thumb that people who don't actually understand baseball follow for no reason. Rules like that ignore the nuance of individual plays. It doesn't consider runners, momentum and direction of the play, position if other players, scoreline, etc. It's just bad baseball plain and simple.

I get to The average person it may appear that that should have been Alex Rodriguez's ball, but in traditional baseball the shortstop gets first go at majority of the pop-ups on the infield because of their angle going towards first base and the third baseman shouldn't go for anything to their left. Unless it's a ground ball, they can cut in front of the shortstop for. Other than that, the only pop-ups they should get are the ones that are directly at third base or in foul territory. Jeter was the SS, he’s in command of the infield. If he calls the ball, you get the fuck out of the way, even if you think it’s “your ball”. Same with corner OF, if the CF calls you off, it’s his.

Every ball hit in the air on the infield belongs to the short stop if he calls it. Pop fly assignments are taught in little league. The Captain was justified in being irritated about it.

Love Jeter but him walking away from that rolling ball while being the most aware of the two at the moment, was totally unprofessional!!… ARod on the other hand, looked confused and even apologetic right after bumping into Jeter and dropping that ball..

Shortstop’s call. Although he shouldn’t have intervened. With that aside, ARod was a substantially better infielder than Jeter.
