Bravo. For your children to have a good future it's so important that they fit right in to Portugal. A mother who goes to so much trouble to expose them to Portuguese culture is a tremendous asset for them. Well done mamae. And I hope your teacher enjoyed seeing her recipe grace the dinner table.

Portuguese Christmas 🎄 is all about the food, lots of food and lots of family and friends around the table...

Sounds like your Christmas, is like ours. Lots of family and friends...Of course the food. Our dinner was a delightful array of Turkey, Ham, Roasted beef, several types of potatoes, candied carrots, green bean casserole, bread and more bread. Plus trays of cheese, shrimp cocktail, deviled eggs and more. Amazingly very little was left. The dessert table was wonderful; Pineapple upside cake, gingerbread cookies (very big and were decorated by the men. The child in them came out), Baked Apples w/vanilla ice cream, fruit cobbler, pumpkin pie and cheese cake 🎂. Everyone enjoyed the food, ate to much, laughed a lot at the Gingerbread man.

I love watching your videos and spending time your family. Seeing Puck and Bo (how their names show up in captions) grow before our eyes is beautiful. And your gardening, cooking and long walks are therapeutic to just go along with you. And Martin has gotten so much more comfortable in front of the camera and that he did it for the sake of being supportive to you is something that I admire. With all that out of the way. I wanted to say I had no idea that salted cod was so popular in other parts of the world. I'm from St. Croix US Virgin Islands and saltfish aka bacalao is popular among all the different ethnic groups. We boil it like you did and it can be prepared in a tomato sauce or an oil based dressing, depending on the preparation it could be served over rice or root vegetables aka provisions or dumplings. There is usually cabbage, corn and boiled eggs accompany the bacalao. Continued blessings in the new year and I look forward to keeping up with your family's adventures big and small. Happy holidays.

“Roupa velha” is a form of reuse leftovers of the day before. We eat “bacalhau com legumes” in the Christmas Eve, for dinner, before attend “missa do galo”. Personally I don’t enjoy “arroz doce”, but I believe you make a good job. Next year, try “rabanadas”, “pudim” ou “leite creme”. “Boas Festas” for everyone!

Yes! I hate arroz doce (who had the idea to use rice for desert!?), but I would eat leite creme every day if I could (with cinnamon on top it's heaven). I would also recommend filhóses - it's my favourite christmas sweet

Happy Holiday! Your meal looks fantastic! Thank you for sharing the recipes. It is so interesting to see the foods each culture eat to celebrate the holidays. And I agree with you,it is usually all about the delicious desserts. YUMM, my mouth was watering watching you make the rice pudding. I’m going to try that recipe. I love watching cooking shows with down to down earth people like you and I. The reason fish is served the day before a religious holiday and Sunday service is because traditionally Catholics do not eat meat before receiving communion. I don’t remember the reason why, but that’s what I was taught as a kid. And if you want to surprise your British friend, the next time you have him over for dinner, serve a traditional British style “fish and chips” which is battered and deep fried cod and deep fried potatoes wedges. So many of the British who now live in Portugal would simply love to have eat some British fish and chips and dip it into Heinz ketchup. I’m pretty sure your family would love that too. I think it’s so exciting trying different foods from around the world. Thank you for the fun video. Enjoy the adventure and Happy almost New Year!

Parabéns Leah! Lot of cooking all at once, hope you enjoy! Some tips about cod...you can taste it raw, before cooking, to check the salt level, and in summer, a salad of raw/salted codfish is delicious, with grilled green peppers, tomato, etc...boiled cod fish is served with olive oil, some heat it, and minced garlic as dressing... its a fish that does dry if it waits too long in the dish.... In the north, its not actually squid but octopus, delicious! Your sweets looked tempting, love the arroz doce with strong lemon taste, orange zest works great too! hope the kids enjoyed the treats! Best part is seating and sharing the meal together! Merry week! 🤗💚

Hello, the rice dish sounds delicious, I hope you saved all those vegie peels and off cuts for your compost for your beautiful food garden. I really admire your efforts in trying to create a traditional Portuguese Christmas dinner, its hard enough to get a meal that's rather lavish together let alone a totally new menu that you're unfamiliar with, I always made it a rule to not experiment with new dishes if I was having guests, it always backfired on me. Kudos to you young lady for that gargantuan effort, was glad to see you sit down and enjoy the fruits of your labour, cheers from Oz!!😇🥰😅😪🥱💕👌👍💪

Portuguese kitchen is simple, but very delicious. I remember when we came in Castelo Branco to a tiny restaurant, where only local people eat, and they only had two things on the menu. One of them was "bacalhau a bras". It looks terrible, but tastes so great, it's now one of my favourite dishes (and it's also easy to prepare). Today I made for my colleges "pastei de nata" for our Christmas-party, and they were a great success. Luckily there is a good Portuguese supermarket not too far from here.

Roupa velha we eat on the 26th with the left over from Christmas eve meal but I suppose different parts of the country have different methods. You are right Natal nao e Natal sen bacalhou😂😂 one thing that is very traditional Natal Transmontano e Cozido à Portuguesa all boiled meats, beef, pork, chicken, chorizo, carrot, potatoes, cabbage, onions and turnips boiled in the same pot served with virgin olive oil and chopped garlic 😋 😋😋😋. For me, is too many eggs in the Arroz Doce and I don't put the egg whites, but every Portuguese woman makes her own adaptations. As a grandmother I still have some my own grandmother's Christmas recipes. Arroz Doce with more or less sauce, more liquid or more solid... others, instead of Arroz Doce make "Aletria" almost the same recipe but with pasta like spaghetti But very, very thin... For example several (many) recipes of Filhoses, it depends a lot on the area of the country, can look the same but they are not exactly the same... different extra ingredients in several recipes ;) On Christmas Day it's the turkey, or other meat and on the Other days, After Christmas, they call it "roupa velha/old clothes", but each one does the left overs in their own way... As for Sonhos in my family we make Sonhos recipe without pumpkin which are heavier, denser and harden faster... Portuguese cuisine is based on various bases and ingredients that each person has available and... a bit of personal creation... the best and more important ingredient... in every recipe: Love q.b. (q.b. = “as much as needed”)

I wouldn't worry that much about that "rule" of not eating meat on Christmas eve. It's true that Portugal is mainly catholic, but atheism is quickly gaining terrain, as almost everywhere in the world. Statistics vary wildly, but I've recently read that a study showed that among people less than 30 years old more than 40% don't have any religion. In general, for the whole population, I've read statistics around 14% or so, and quickly growing (especially as generations are replaced). Even many older people, like myself (I'm 58) are also atheists (like myself). Even among catholics, many aren't that strict about that meat tradition (my mother is catholic but she doesn't care about that).
