First, this is the combo channel concept I didn't realize I needed. I love me my RPG, CCG, and board game stuff *and* I love me some wood working. New sub all the way. Second, regarding the bottom plate first attempt, I'd suggest you're doing basically the right methods with the wrong tools for such a delicate piece. You want a mallet rather than a hammer for chisel work since it keeps you from applying near so much force. You then want a 1/4" rather than a 1/2" chisel so the force is more narrowly focused for a clean cross-grain cut. Personally, I'd have used a Dremel with a cutting guide and a routing bit for the bulk of it then used a 1/4" chisel to clean it up.

Really appreciate that, thank you! After working on it I definitely agree, I am not used to working on SMALL or delicate things, and what I know from working on bigger projects did not translate appropriately. Smaller chisel isn't something I considered to concentrate force, that is a good idea, thanks! As I like to say when I screwed up but learned something "Learning has occurred"

Thank you, Yeah that is exactly why I made it, was tired of finding numbers on dice that would roll around if I accidentally hit them.

Really cool idea. Re: the breaking/tearout, i wonder if that could be mitigated by rotating the wood 90 degrees so the life counter slots run with the grain instead of across it. It changes the look of the final result, so i get why you might not want to do that. If you try something similar in the future, you could add a thin veneer running perpendicular between your two resawn pieces - basically mini-plywood. I've done that for small projects where i was worried about things breaking along the grain and it's super useful - if you use a contrasting wood, it can even be a nice visual touch.

That is what I originally thought, which is why I used a drill instead of a router on the perpendicular cuts. The tearout kept happening when using a router on the parallel recess for the marker. I think I just wasnt doing as shallow of a pass, and had a bad setup, the router would catch and BAM, break/ tearout. The veneer is a good idea, I have some thin Birch Plywood I almost used, but I really wanted it to look like it was one solid piece so I didn't, but I like the veneer idea!

Neat idea. I know some people who would be interested in something like this.

thanks! I am definitely going to remake it at some point with the better version of the knobs, but it still functions perfect as is.

Use the router to cut out your panel slots, then do the table saw trick, then route out the piece for the dry erase board.

Tried it with the router, was too violent, broke multiple times because there is only about 1/8-1/4 inch between em.... I dont have a variable speed router, its all or nuthin

Maybe if you make another try magnets. They should glue in easy and allow enough resistance so they don’t slide. But I’ve never tried so maybe a test.

Under the dials instead of the screws. I don’t know if they would move correctly or not. But if you’re going to make more maybe worth a test?

@@FuzzyLiger OH gotcha, that's not a bad Idea actually.... But I did figure out a Much better way once I finished this, I like your idea with magnets as well..... might try them both out next time I make this.
