Thought I’d separately comment from the chain I started earlier. It seems to me that gearbox shifting is the future for MTB. The tech seems not quite there yet to enable widespread adoption, but I bet the current trade-offs (no downshifting while pedalling and fewer gears for less granularity) will be overcome in time. The weight penalty may not be a penalty at all since the weight is off the back wheel triangle. It reminds me of the transition from rim brakes to disc brakes in the 90’s.
@DaleStone

As soon as someone solves shifting under load, I'd take the weight penalty for the low maintenance and active suspension any day. More thought required until then!

I'd love to try one, but I ride a lot of uphill stuff so having a gearbox + high pivot is just not going to work(props for having a chain instead of belt though). This bike is intended for going mainly down and by the looks of it, it does that pretty well. Personally I am very interested in gearboxes, but I still believe it will be at least 5-10 more years before we see a drop in weight, as well as a drop in drag. How does the gearbox work on it? I can tell that there seems to be an internal box, but not much beyond that. Does the sprocket on the crank spin at a different speed to the pedals? Like attached to the gearbox instead, with the pedals moving a gear farther down the shaft in the interior of the box itself? It doesn't seem like you could shift if it was attached to the pedals, since it would only have one speed. I've never seen a bike with a gearbox, so I'm totally just guessing. Would love to learn a bit more about how exactly it shifts though, it seems fascinating!

Damn that bike ticks all but 4 of my esoteric downduro bike boxes. It doesn’t have a dual crown fork, doesn’t have a concentric pivot (so it still needs a spring loaded chain tensioner), and it doesn’t have and inboard brake. Those last 2 kind of exclude the use of a pinion/effingear gearbox, or would require a Jack shaft.

You could likely put a dual crown on it! And concentric pivot or not, I don't see how you avoid the tensioner without two chains...

@@DaleStone if the output sprocket of the gearbox isn’t concentric with the bottom bracket but is concentric with the suspension pivot then the chain doesn’t change length as the suspension moves. So you only need a fixed chain tensioner like a single speed hardtail.

Seems like a non issue especially with the upshifting capabilities.

All for smaller local companies bringing new things to market. I'll buy bikes from local companies for as long as they make them
