I found an extremely rare quarter one time. I knew exactly what it was being a coin collector. I immediately dropped everything and sped to my normal coin shop to sell it. I walked in with my chest puffed out and set the quarter on the counter. The guy behind the counter looks at it and his eyes widen. He asks “how much are you looking to get for this?” I said “one million in gold bullion”. He laughed and said if this is actually what I think it is, you’ve got yourself a deal. Then I stood anxiously waiting for him to look at it in the back. A few minutes later he came back with his loop and handed it to me and said “you’re not gonna like this but it’s a copy”. It was a solid silver copy with a copy mark on it in small lettering. Made for people to complete their collections because the real version of that coin costs more than a literal mansion or super car. He gave me the silver value and sent me on my way. Now years later when thinking about it, I don’t ever recall seeing that copy mark on the coin. I sincerely hope he didn’t steal a million dollars from me.

I don't think that im imagining it but when the Quarter switched in 99 or 2000, I had no idea that they were changing the look or what they looked like. I was bartending full-time back then. We had dart leagues, Foosball teams, pinball machines and videogames, and those touch screen games and none took anything but quarters. To add to it, I was just getting back into coin collecting and I would not just look through the quarters and other change, but I would bust all quarter rolls open after I found a Standing Liberty Quarter one day. I seem to remember staring at the quarter thinking it was odd. I don't think that I'd seen Sacajawea coin yet so I remember thinking it was a nice change on the Quarter. I don't remember if I had seen a state quarter yet. I guess my memory is fuzzy except for seeing that eagle on the quarter. Pretty sure it was on a quarter planchet, but maybe it was the other way around

@davidr1676

@lancesudberry209 pretty much every coin designed under Teddy Roosevelt's plan was a work of art. I don't know if the Lincoln cent was or not, but that should have been changed when the wheat ears went away, or at least when the standard composition changed in late 82 or 83. I love a lot of pattern coins, but many of them were far cheaper than a rental return car. The best patterns aren't cheap but so beautiful. I wish the mint made some coins from electrum, no matter how rare or even a nice mix made in a lab/smelting process. I had a lot of interesting coins, medals, or whatever from around the world and especially the ones from Europe but for African or Asian, Oceania colonies. Some were quite worn down, but regardless of the cost, I'll never find them in a coin dealers "junk box" again with a fistful of these for random amounts he'd call out like "$1.89", "2.64", etc. The best finds were when silver was $3 to $5 an ounce, and there were old US coins included that must've gotten to other countries to get shipped back in the foreign trash coins. He didn't even worry about the silver ones until silver was getting towards $10 an ounce. Copper, Bronze, and other metals of certain countries proved to be profitable, especially German, British, Scandinavian coins from the 1800s, and some rougher ones from 1700s. Eventually, either the good stuff got picked over, or he went through them. I found a few coins that I've never found in a book, and I've looked at books with some focused on medals, limited editions, and patterns but also found a few pieces of Chinese counterfeit garbage. The worst case was finding what looked like a high AU or low BU Trade dollar. I wasn't aware of Chinese fakes, and this was an antique store run by a Chinese couple. They had mostly real but worn and common date coins and notgeld, but I was thinking they must not have caught the price on the Trade Dollar. I should've had my digital scale with me. That was when the fake coins were often off in weight or composition, but they got a bunch of us by putting one out at a time. They shut down within a few more months. The common Roosevelt and Mercury dimes were about 40 cents apiece, and when prices peaked around 2011 or 2012, I sold most of anything silver that wasn't beautiful or semi-key or tougher. Unfortunately, my 1889 Carson City Morgan Dollar, obtained in a stack of random Morgan's, was far from a mint state or that would've been the best find.

I've got to know. Why do people pay so much for coins? What value does it bring them?

Prestige and bragging rights (in addition to plain old personal satisfaction) in the collector clubs that they belong to. I HAVE heard tell though... that some of this stuff is just money laundering. One person pays another an exorbitant amount of money for a coin and it gets declared as income so that drug money, trafficking money, arms money, or prostitution money can be turned into legit money in a banking institution and used/invested.

When I was a cashier . A gentleman bought some cigarillos. And out of desperation, he game me 2 Quarters. One was from 1918, and other was from 1927 or 29. I kept them for a while but my dumbass did the same thing. I bought blunts and used those quarters to buy them because I was an addict and dumb. I regret it till this day

I metal detect and find quarters from 1800s and early 1900s, and their awesome to find but their not worth a lot, $10 - $15 at most, basically silver price. I find Spanish silver coins from 1600s and their not worth a whole lot. I do have a couple worth $100 - $300.

I have a quarter D 2023 just unwrapped to give me 3 for change from a purchase. One, in the middle, has what appears to have an extra marking on the coin. It looks like it is very clean line echo . Maybe a double press? Perfect arc.

So it's a "Mule". The first I've heard of in US coins. There are a couple in Australian coins that I know of.

"OH MY GOD NOBODY ELSE IN THE WORLD HAS THIS QUARTER!!!" Mule or not, It'll still rotate a gumball machine like any other quarter. Not to mention that even if it were real gold, the weight alone wouldn't even be worth a hundreth of the price sold.

I’ve seen those! Ong the ticket machines on the link light rail in Seattle Tacoma area used to give brand new Sacajawea dollars for change.
