My 104 yr. old uncle died this morning. He had been sorting and tossing out his pictures and his caretaker had rescued them. I’m one of 5 left in the family, and the only one left who knows who they are. Thank heavens she caught it.

They wanted $15 for the pair of the red “fridgies”. The color was a little worn, no doubt from being lovingly used all these years, so at that price there wouldn’t have been much profit to be made when similar with better color sell for $15-$25 for a pair. Now for someone looking to use for personal use, better to buy there than pay for shipping!

I do not understand why people get upset about family pictures if they’re being sold then you can buy them. Our next-door neighbor passed away a few years ago and she had no children and left it to a family friend every single picture she owned was in that sale. She left her entire state which is quite valuable to this person I couldn’t believe that they couldn’t just keep a tub of pictures in their closet out of respect. But they didn’t so I bought a few and wish I had bought more. I even bought one of her wedding invitations from when she got married Many years before she died in her 90s. But if it’s at a sale clearly no one wanted it , so at least you’re taking it home so it doesn’t get thrown away I don’t know what happened to all the pictures next-door.

Someone at my flea market rescued an entire family’s photographic history from a dumpster this summer. A relative inherited the house, took what they wanted, then hired a company to clean out the house - which everything went into the dumpster. This person was told about the dumpster, requested permission to take stuff, & they saved so many old photographs & papers. Some photos were from the early 1900s in Atlantic City, NJ & for a historian, they were wonderful! Photos of the Atlantic City beach patrol, buildings that aren’t there anymore. So glad that he found out about the dumpster & saved them!

I was thinking of buying all of the photographs, but knew for me - in regard to reselling only - I wouldn't be able to "make a profit" paying $1.00 each. I can't sell the portrait photographs for $3-$5 each, like many others do at the flea market, because I'd be coming home with every single one. I still enjoyed that they had them at the sale & priced at $1.00, I'm sure others that also enjoy old photographs were happy to stumble across them. It's September, wow! Time does fly... Hope that you had a nice weekend!

Agree with what you said about old photos! I have an extensive collection of many genres and when someone asks me any of those questions, I will remind them that it was most likely the family that got rid of the photos and that instead of being in the garbage, I've given them a home where, even though I don't know who they are, are still being honored.

That watch spring tin was a great find - to keep or sell! Horologists are mad collectors as you know. Hope the Civil War document - even though a copy - leads you to discover some previously unknown and fascinating story about the era. I remember patching my bike tire tubes with those Allstar kits like the one at 5:20 - small cheese grater to rough up the rubber, glue and a patch. Always felt better after patching a tube - not sure if it was the accomplishment or the glue. And is there anything better than sitting on a couch at a sale going through photos? People can say what they will about those who sell family photos - but buying them is nothing but upside for everyone! Have a great Labor Day! BTW, our estate sale (etc.) numbers were down this weekend (fewer). I thought they would go up because many people are off Monday but I guess everyone is trying to sneak in a last day at the beach!
@PaperandMoose
25 күн бұрын
I would think it's the accomplishment of patching the tire! I'd be so happy if I could plug a vehicle tire myself (had my 3rd nail in less than 2 years last week...), but I would be too scared that I did it wrong and *pop* goes the tire as I drive. I'd rather spend the $40 to have my friendly mechanic fix it and know that it's done properly. There is an estate sale coming up in the next few weeks and it looks like a digger/hoarder sale with things just in piles on the floor, every single space in a cupboard is filled, beds piled high with stuff... Not sure if the company will try to tidy things up or leave as is, but I'm already looking forward to that! Hope that you have a restful Labor Day!

Yes, it is difficult to sort through hundreds of photographs and realize you don't know who most of them are. I'm the oldest and I have been going through photos from both sides of my family and it's tough. There are so many photos and so many without any information as to who they might be and even if they are marked, the name of the person means nothing to me. It's just me and my brother and he is not sentimental at all, so he isn't all that interested and I cannot keep all of them. It has been a challenge, but I totally understand why people let them go in estate sales or auctions etc. The fact that you are able to find some of interest is wonderful. I even thought about sending some of these to you, but they aren't that great of photos and the old cameras without zoom lenses took pictures so far away, it is impossible to decipher who or what it is. Family is shrinking and the younger ones have zero interest in photos of people who they don't know, even if they are related. For a genealogist, maybe, but again, quality is relevant. And, no, I'm not that person. Too many rabbit holes and no one else is interested.

@@PaperandMoose I know one fellow who loves technology from 1960-1990, he has a large collection of early mobile phones and stereo receivers from that period. He always tells me if I ever want to sell my top-of-the-line Sony component system (1981) he'll buy it. I bought it new and still use it daily...all units are in mint condition. I'm glad you have your period interest, that's what makes the hobby going. I still think of the 70s-90s as "modern", forgetting this era is retreating into the past...1970...54 years ago!!!! When, in 1963, I started collecting vintage items from 1920-1960...1920 was 43 years in the past! All relative as to time! My collection of "classic rock" 45s, I bought new, is 50-plus years old...and I keep forgetting, I'm an "antique" myself!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hope Taco got a good return for that ring, as it was a neat piece.
