I watched this episode last night and I couldn't stop thinking about it she did not deserve that for him to call her a monster when she was being affectionate towards him she showed another side to herself that he asked her to show him and because of jealousy or insecurities over her ability to wield a sword he looks at her calling her a monster and what makes it even more sad is that she thinks she's a monster because she's been hearing that all her life and after what happened between the two of them that intimacy between them as husband and wife mizu honestly did not deserve to be treated that way I felt so bad for her 😢

When I first watched this I fell in love with her. The rage. Her strength, her flow and all the things that she is. But when I seen the 5th episode it broke me. Why she had so much rage and so much hate going on in her heart that became so dark when I finally understood her. She was hated by all people. Had to hide to be a man in disguise all her life since no woman will go in violence as a law. Her trust betrayed when she is so distrustful, distance, and vengeful. Mizu deserves better than this. I loved how they tied Mizu's past to the story of the Ronin and the Bride. I saw her as the Ronin, with her new husband as the "bride", a sort of gender-swapped story, fitting for Mizu's gender-swapped life. But then he betrayed her, and she ended up as the bride after all, and then she became the Onryō. She had finally found happiness, only to have it betrayed, and the hate within her rekindled.

I'm convinced that Mizu and Taigen would be a good match. We saw how Mikio pushed Mizu away when he realized she was a lot better than him. Her expertise made him feel inferior, and he hated that. With Taigen however, it's the total opposite. When Mizu pinned him down (basically winning their sparring match), there was *that* moment between them iykyk. He's not repelled by Mizu's skills. He's attracted to them. He's attracted to her--or in this case, "him" because he doesn't know Mizu's a woman. I believe that he will find out the truth in S2, and that this reveal will not change his attraction toward her. It might even be the breakthrough of a relationship between them. We'll see. I just believe it's such an interesting dynamic between these two if they are endgame. It would mean A LOT of character development, a real enemies to lovers arc that would be interesting to see. Even if Mizu ends up as a lone wolf, it would still really be nice to see her being loved unconditionally. After all the hatred and rejection she's faced, she deserves someone who will stand by her side permanently.

The ronin and bride was my favorite episode. Mizu was great, the moment she said "Do you lose your backbone when you lost your title" When she said that... It was over. At the start. He starts the fight very playful. No live blade However i think at 0:47 he sees into her eyes, he sees the ferocity she holds back, this scares him. When he wants to stop, Mizu was sadly in the moment too much and decided to to be playful by mocking him. She was genuinely happy. His fear is seen again at 1:35 I truly think that he would have accepted this side of her, in a smaller dose, but when Mizu went all out in being vulnerable. It was too much for him. I enjoy the scene because it is easy to understand both perspectives and despite me blaming Mizu more during the sparring match. I do believe he was. The one that betrayed her, and yet. I believe him when he said he came back to save her. However he was too much of a coward to admit the shame of what he had done. Betraying his wife.

@@oldomen3788 I agree with you because when he first appeared in the distance looking at her surrounded by the soldiers he didn't look surprised at all, the points you made were spot on and it was especially bad because of that time period where men were always thought of as being much stronger than any women and having her show such strength would of rocked his world view too much for him to handle and it was one of my favourite episodes as well, I was feeling everything she was from feeling out of her element trying to be a wife and to slowly forming a connection to the turn into trust and then love was so heart-warming to watch and then as they were play fighting I knew it was over, poor mizu my heart broke for so many times in that show and it is truly a master-class in all aspects of story telling. @@danielcalabrese5769 oh yeah. . Grave of the fireflies.... I have not watched that yet. It is in my watchlist for anime. Mikio was definitely an interesting encounter for Mizu, and throughout the episode, it was clear he was willing to put up with her some of her rela self, and he was kind and willing to sacrifice his FUCKING PRIZED HORSE!!! Which was to win him his samurai title. His dream! And he was intrigued with her story to have lived as a boy (maybe she should not have drastically underestimated her ability to him 🤣). I think him betraying her makes... Most sense to me, it also to me makes it more tragic that he decided last minute to run back and save her. (Even if he was sincere. It mattered little. He called her a monster.) This episode is one where I can no longer distinguish the meme of women crying at Titanic and men crying at quotes from Napoleon. I'm not sure if we ever get to find out for sure who did it, but for me the story kind of indicated that both of them had betrayed her. At the very least, I can't imagine Mikio is innocent because if he was then his behavior made no sense. I mean, he clearly stopped liking her at all after he called her a monster, stopped eating meals with her, and sold her horse. Where did his behavior at the end come from, saying how much he loved her? What makes the most sense is he sold her out as he was selling his horses, and when seeing the men come, he ran away because he had no intention of helping Mizu. After seeing that the men weren't going to be able to finish her off, he feared that Mizu would hunt him down and didn't want to move out of his house without taking his belongings, so he conveniently shows up at the end of the fight holding a sword hoping to show that he really was going to help and make Mizu think that he wasn't the one who betrayed her. Because he knew that of course it had to be either him or Mizu's mom who did it. This is also just speculation but I feel like he wasn't lying when he said that the mom got money for her opium, as well. That's actually common with drug addicts too, ones who are super far gone, they try to take out anyone getting in their way of their addiction, even people they care about because that's how addicted they are, they're a slave of their own decisions. I've seen it happen irl too, a teenage daughter brought her stepfather to court saying he was physically keeping her from leaving the house when in reality he just said "I don't think it's a good idea" because he caught on that she was high and that she might be addicted, and there were multiple witnesses knowing that he didn't touch her. She wanted to go to her grandma's who enabled her drug behavior and, as a slave to her addiction, sued him so she could live with her grandma and do drugs forever, even though she had a really good relationship with her stepfather before. I wouldn't be surprised if a woman sold out her daughter for drugs if she was addicted. It would be nice to think that someone who genuinely loves you dearly would never do that, but it happens

And I respect anyone's opinion on who really sold put Miku(as long as someone doesn't say the horse did it 😂😂😂). There are good hints and motives for both Mikio and the mom(or maid?), and there is also a possibility that both were either in cahoots or sold her out to different people at the same time. It sort of feels like the writers left it to interpretation, and we will never get the answer. Perhaps they feel like they shouldn't give us the true answer, because the point was the morale of the story for Mizu, she can trust no one

His fear is seen again at 1:35 I truly think that he would have accepted this side if her, in a smaller dose, but when Mizu went all out in being vulnerable.

Her husband showed what true weakness looks like. He could only approve of Mizu as long as she still conformed to his rules. When she showed she could exceed him in combat that negated every other experience he had with her because he was too weak to accept that any woman could be better than him at anything. Mizu would have been a ferocious ally for life for him and he threw it all away and then betrayed his honor because his pride was damaged.

I watched this with my parents(we all absolutely loved this series, we got really invested). When Mikio called her a monster, we were all screaming, "WHY?!?!?!" at the TV. Although I can understand the reasoning why, especially since this was set in the 17th century. I mean, imagine if a husband found out his wife was stronger than him back in that time period. MAN, I've read about guys killing their wives for less. Given the mindset of people back then, I'm not surprised Mikio acted that way, but dayum, realistically it makes no sense and it is so painful to watch. She did not deserve that at all, they could've been so happy together if he just accepted her

Guys you know what I just noticed? Rewatching the whole thing of Blue Eye Samurai, I noticed in episode 5, maybe in my theory. That when Mikio came back with a sword as he puts that shit down saying "I came to help." And all that shit saying he was a coward but came back. Yes I do believe he did it, sold her out to the soldiers to kill her but....what if what Mizu mother said about Mikio that he stood by to watch them kill her. That he did but they were failing their mission to kill her so what if he was trying to take it in his own hand. Mikio killing her instead??? But Mizu caught him in time? HOLY SHIT BALLS! 😮💨 Also, it makes me cry when Mizu is crying at the end.

In Mikio's defense, I think his reaction is more than just his pride being hurt -- it was actually genuine fear. This episode left me with way more questions than answers. Help me out here; if her plan was to avenge her mother's death by finding her father. This episode show mother is still alive. So avenging her death is no longer necessary. Also, how did mother think Mitzu would fair on her own as a child, she was left all alone with no one to protect her. Then a husband, by appearance, a decent husband? Was he afraid of her, by the time they had become intimate, he knew her well. Did he turn her in, and her killed mother. That kinda proves to me at least that he turmed her in. Last episode, she just leaves, letting the white man manipulate her into going to London? How does she know he's telling the truth. So confused, need season 2-4 now!!!
