Mine just arrived in the mail. I’m 41 and see myself dailying this watch until I’m very old without maintenance, and without crying if it gets scratched up or actually breaks, which it won’t. I bought it for myself, so no emotional attachment yet. I grew up in Queens, New York, and I remember my very old landlord daillying his vintage 60’s Seiko 5 everywhere. Especially gardening.Jerry was born in 1912 and died in my arms after falling down the stairs in 2005. I always admired his Seiko 5. Hopefully one of his great grandchildren still has it.

I bought the SNXS79K about 9 months ago. I have always preferred cases in a larger diameter, typically the 40-42mm range. The SNXS79K has become the favorite of my collection and allowed me to embrace a smaller case size which has carried over to other watches. I appreciate your assessment of the SNXS79K, especially the versatility. I have used both NATO straps for a casual look and a more robust oyster style replacement bracelet for a dressier look. I have the silver version (SNXS73) which is still available. It is one of the cheapest yet most expensive looking watches in my collection; particularly the dial is just flawless. Its size is just classy on my 7 inch / 175 mm wrist. The watch is only considered authentic on a Chinese Rolamy Oyster bracelet though which beefs up its look considerably. I reserve mine for dressy occasions (where also its water resistance is no concern) though it fits virtually any attire. Definitely a must-have. I have both the 79 and the 73 (silver dial), which were two of my first automatic watches. Love the dial. Agree with you that it would be better if the lugs curved down and the case were less of a UFO from the profile. Also wish the case were a bit less polished. Some brushing would be nice. The secret to removing the difficult links is to use a regular flat screwdriver with a thin head (rather than a spring bar tool or watch screwdriver), and hold it perpendicular to the link. It catches the little nub if you press down and forward. I don't wear mine as often as I used to, but both are on straps.

I was lucky to buy its predecessor used about a year ago for an equivalent of USD 40 and it's awesome. It's one or two millimeters thinner as it has a solid case back, plus it has an older caliber, which runs incredibly precisely (within +2 s/d). Much more consistent than two newer 7S26 watches I have. And the old movement also has a cool feature that the day of the week is set by pressing the crown like a pusher... I polished the case and had the crystal swapped and now have a super cool dress watch. BTW I tried swapping the bracelet for a cheap oyster replica, but I ended up going back to the original, which is more comfortable and, despite being flimsy, much more pleasant to the touch.

Sits nicely on my wrist. The common failure of this watch has been mentioned is the bracelet, but I find the brushed bracelet/polished case a nice contrast. Very happy. Thank you Jenni. How's it holding up? I want a daily dive watch but I found one of these with a yellow face and fell in love. I would just get the dive watch and buy this later but ik these are no longer made and the prices will start to rise. On the other hand I've never had a dive watch and want one badly but if I buy this I can't justify buying another watch for a long time......oh lord lol the pain of being a watch guy

@@trevorgray4852 This is not a dive watch, but I don't swim so no issues there for me. I paid I think 185.00 CND. I've heard they have gone up but haven't looked lately. Look at it as an investment. Works perfectly and is a beautiful timepiece.

A great review Jenni. I purchased this watch two and a half years ago, that dial is fantastic and is the best feature of the watch. I swapped out the bracelet for a leather band almost immediately. Although it's a smaller watch as you point out it certainly looks like a flying saucer on the wrist. Accuracy varies but is within ~10 seconds per day. The price now on Amazon is over double what I paid for mine as the popularity of this piece has grown significantly. Usually the opposite happens to me, prices usually plummet within days if items I purchase. Overall the watch is a great all rounder, the lack of hand winding is no issue as long as you shake it for 20 seconds or so from stopped it keeps it keeps ticking fine for a day on the wrist, another 20 seconds shake will easily keep it running through the night. The lack of hacking does not bother me that much as I set mine up to a minute fast any way. It also looks good on my 7" wrist (not huge) as much as it works well for members of the itty bitty wrist committee :-) Keep up the great work Jenni.

I have a OP that’s a few years old, and this Seiko is really really good compared to the price. The movement does it’s job and doesn’t make a sound almost. And I don’t think the bracelet is annoying at all. The OP used to be my everyday watch, but since I got the Seiko, I’ve used it more than my OP. There is a big different between them, but i gotta say, I would recommend the Seiko to anyone because it’s so good for around 200$.

Can you tell me exactly why is lack of hacking and hand winding bad thing or downside of one (any may I say) automatic watch? I wear only one watch (SKX007 precisely) and never got a desire to hand wind or hack second hand, neederless to say 36 hours or more power reserve is unnecessary.
@mrk131324
3 жыл бұрын
@@stevanpavic Agree on the SKX, have and wear one, too. But I do miss hacking. I like to set my watch to the precise time every morning (unless I wear my Spring Drive, then once a month is enough). Hacking is just more convenient then the pseudo hacking your have to do with the SKX. My comment was just highlighting the point that a lot of very expensive “high end” watches have no hacking either.

The only thing I don't like about the Seiko 5 is that it doesn't allow for manual winding like many other automatics. Yes, you can shake it and get it to run. However, I find that sometimes it stops running when you are sitting in front of your office desk all day. The watch definitely requires more action.

Great review of a simple but elegant watch! If I had room in my case right now I'd get one! By the way, the 7S26 is one of my favorite Seiko movements. I love it in my SKXs. It's so simple to simply give it a few shakes if my watch has been stored and it springs to life and keeps decent time too!

If this had a 4R36 movement, sapphire crystal and a better bracelet all for another $100 or so it would be an incredible watch but then it again it might not have the same ‘charm’. This watch reminds me of my Hamilton Khaki king II, I would put a mesh bracelet on this watch, I have bought nice ones from Amazon for less than $20. However, she said the lug width is 19mm, you can get away with a leather strap, or a NATO that was 20mm, but with a metal band, you would have to make sure it was 19mm.
