The water anole is a semi-aquatic species with hydrophobic skin that repels water. When the lizard exhales underwater, an air bubble is formed on top of its skin, which may allow the lizard to ‘rebreathe’ oxygen from its lungs, helping it stay underwater for up to 18 minutes. This behavior was discovered in 2009 during a research expedition in Haiti.
