As a black belt in taekwondo, we were taught to NEVER go full power on a lower ranking belt. I have no clue as to why a black belt would do that. Part of being a black belt is being able to control your power, that is basically the opposite of controlling your power. Also, it took me 7 and a half years to get to black belt, 1-2 years is completely unrealistic unless you go to a belt factory. Edit: I used to go to Impact Martial Arts, Clinton, NJ. I left about 6 months ago and moved to a different state.

Added info: The girl sued the coach because the coach intended to destroy girl emotionally and physically because as what her mother said to interview the coach had a crush on the girl which happened to be his(coach) student. The girl frequently rejected the coach's indecent proposals before that happened and planned and arranged an unfair sparring match that will surely injure his student. Thus, ended up suing the coach and now facing multiple charges. By the way that happened here in the philippines. 🇵🇭

For those who don’t know: she is still alive but is currently in a hospital and her injuries are: broken nose, and bruises and the police is still investigating about what happened. And as a new yellow belter in taekwondo that has no experience about sparring I’m pretty scared

Yeah it is scary I did Taekwondo during highschool and sparring was rough, most likely since I was a kid who had never really been in a proper fight going up against adults, yeah my group didn't bother about age just what belt you were, I never got injured though. I think if I was to do it now I could manage sparring although it's been years since I quit. I was getting ready to earn the blue belt when I decided to quit Taekwondo since I was losing time with friends cuz of it, that and getting bored I guess. One time I broke a black board and man did I feel like a champion

As someone who has done TKD for a collective of around 8 years, my advice is only to ever spar with someone you know and trust. Start decent, don’t dish what you can’t take, forgo the headshots and just breathe and mess around a little at first; smile and laugh at stupid stuff you do, and gradually make your way into more complex techniques. This is the time to play and test out cool sh!t you learned. In sparring, I’ve been knocked out, had my nose broken, hit the ground and been beaten while down. The moment you feel legitimately unsafe, tap out or move away. It’s never worth staying in a fight over nothing.

This is recent news from the Philippines. What happened was allegedly the yellow-belt girl's instructor made romantic advances towards her but got rejected. I'm gonna give you a background on this one since it was on mainstream media as well. This happen in the Philippines where in the coach of the taekwondo team in their university has a crush on the girl, but the coach learned that the girl already have a boyfriend and it seems he doesn't like it. After knowing that, the coach pair the girl on a sparring with a black belter guy and it didn't go well. The girl suffer a head injury and having mental issues, her nose broke and having a black eye as well. The university president took action on this and the coach of the taekwondo team was already out of the institution and facing criminal charges.

Yikes! I was about to say, that in some testing conditions, you may have those kind of pairings, but they're very rare, and the black belt usually knows to not go hard and spar defensively. Oh, and anything above the shoulder is a HUGE no-no in those situations. In competitive sparring, yes, IF controlled. The few cases where this didn't happen and people taking naps is uh... yeah, too many that I've judged.

It takes abt 2 years to earn a blackbelt in TKD. Not a lot of material to learn. You can do it in abt 1 year if you go to Korea. There you train everyday all day. That's all you do for that year. In the US we made it complicated do to our social structure and laziness. Going only 3 nights a week for 1 hour classes gets you nowhere and takes forever to advance to blackbelt. And we added a few belt colors to lengthen the journey and to empty the pocket book for those 3 years. Here in the US it more of a marketing system.

Did the black belt hold back, because if not then he is just an asshole. When at that level, and get into a sparing match with either A) someone lower ranked then you, or B)someone much younger then you to where physical strength would greatly impact the match(like a teen getting paired up with a 8 year old) then you absolutely hold back to their level. You may give them a challenge to rise up to, as it's a great way to learn, but you arnt a souls boss, and don't need to make it impossible, or injure your opponent. Also, generally in sparring matches you will hold back a bit either way, as you arnt trying to exclusively injure your opponent again.

No. I been thru a few martial arts. Most of them you will spar with blackbelts. Both need to learn. Blackbelts mainly so they learn more control and how to gauge. Colored belts are inexperienced and you need someone to learn from. When I did TKD and a orange belt I fought all ranks. There was always 1 rule. You were never allowed to do higher level techniques or strikes higher than that colored belts level. And the blackbelts need to learn since you have to learn to teach at 1st degree. The chief instructor in charge is the person responsible for maintaining the control in the sessions. And sparring should be fun. Light nothing hard and heavy. There is other types of trading and sparring you do for the more serious levels. Like one is the closed/locked door policy. Or the blackbelt only class. Blackbelts and colored belts need to interact on all levels.

Why in the world were they even letting them fight? Isn't it a strict rule to never make girls take on boys? Unless the girl was YEARS ahead in experience, this shouldn't have been a matchup. Eeh I only have about a year in training in kickboxing and this is only my personal current experience (so keep in mind this is probably different depending on the gym or something) but we have no issues with allowing both genders to sparr against each other just remember that you need to hold back on weaker opponents and that you are sparring not trying to kill each other lol (there's also a BJJ dojo near were I live that went to once since they were offering 1 free session for people so they could get more folks interested in coming back, and from what I can recall they didn't have issues with allowing the girls and boys to sparr with each other ether, i don't think gender really matters when it comes to training and I think it's pretty good that way tbh.)

It’s fine to spar a black belt at a lower belt, however it probably should only be done if: 1. The lower belt has no one else to spar / they need to learn or need experience with a black belt 2. This is a sparring match. There really isn't anything wrong with having people of different genders or belts spar together. When I spar, my opponent and I are not trying to kill each other, it's a light match. If the person I'm sparring is much weaker than I am or less experienced, I take it easier. With people around my level, who can clearly take some hits, we'll be more aggressive. It's common sense. In an actual fight or tournament however? Genders should 100% be kept separate, and people of greatly different skill levels should not fight.

For more context, this has happened to be a crime. The "coach" was somehow allowing the black belt against the yellow belt. The black belt kick the yellow belt when yellow belt was already falling. Other people who had the same "coach" texted the yellow belt that the coach did the same thing to them which they call "abuse". The coach also did this because he was rejected.
