The dialogue is horrible. I do like the design, but in my personal opinion, Galadriel is poorly written. That is nothing against the actress; that is just the show writers who seem to want to try too hard to sound like Tolkien. If they were trying to be completely original, it would probably be a whole lot better. You can write a story based on Tolkien and still be original. I don’t know what they’re afraid of.

Woke is such a bizarre catch all term. Yes, there is some diverse casting. Yes, there are female POV characters. But at its core it is quite a religious show about good versus evil. I really wanted to like this show, especially with all the ridiculous hate it was getting before it was even released. Then I watched it, and as much as I didn’t want to, I really did just find it…boring. It didn’t capture either the grand, majestic scale or the whimsical charm that I want when I journey to Middle Earth. I didn’t particularly care about most of the characters. I was happy for those who enjoyed it, but my reaction was just “oh, that was kind of dull and disappointing.” As far as I’m concerned, and as it is with many of these rebooted/remade corporate products, I don’t see how a strong, angry reaction can be anything other than an anti-woke grift.

There is nothing that warrants these extreme responses, it’s just a TV show. It feels like in general, media is either overhyped or overhated and like you said - why can’t we just be normal about things anymore? Why can’t you just be a casual fan of something? Also, even though this video wasn’t about the Hobbit, I feel like it applies to it. People talk about the Hobbit movies like they’re the worst pieces of cinema ever made and that’s just not true. I enjoyed all of them! There’s a lot of genuine criticism toward them, sure, but they aren’t abominations.

Season 1 was solid enough, but Season 2 was a huge improvement! I'm just grateful so much of it exists in the first place-especially some of the score/original songs, getting to see places and worlds like Númenor and Khazad Dûm, excellent original characters like Adar, and truly stunningly good adaptation like everything with Sauron/Celebrimbor. That makes it all worth celebrating, to me!

How would writers and show runners even know what to improve on or how certain added elements are being received by fans if nobody discussed shows unless they liked it? I’m not sure what’s up with this new generation and new trend of trying to silence people who disagree with you. There’s nothing wrong with having discourse on why a show/book/game/movie or whatever is good or bad. People only talk about it because they care about these properties. You’re basically saying that unless you are giving something praise, you shouldn’t say anything. I think the show gets such hard criticism because they always stated it's the most expensive show ever made, so that made people have super high expectations. Personally I don't care abot what color of skin or how tall the characters are, but I can't deny that many of them are just unlikable to me. Since the very first scene, I felt Galadriel didn't care at all about his little army when she was searching for Sauron, all her interactions with other characters were just manipulative and angsty, she made the biggest mistake of not telling everyone who Sauron was as soon as she knew and she never has repercussions about her poor choices. The passing of the time is very unclear, we can see characters being in one place, and then the next scene they are already in another one, same clothes and everything, but in a place that supposedly should take weeks to reach. This happens so many times it's really confusing. I felt some scenes were way too quick, they build up the Balrog for two seasons and it was on screen for a total of 3 minutes, being forgotten by everyone as soon as the cave collapsed. I'm making just one example but there are really so many it would take me forever to list them all. I'm not the biggest fan of the lord of the rings movies, and I didn't read the books. To me it's just not a very good series. That said, when I watch a video where all their criticisms are about how white the elfs and dwarves should be, I close it at the speed of light, that's just stupid You made a great video and I'm glad you are enjoying the series :)

There's a few reviews (that were a bit negative) that I kinda liked which were a bit more meme-y and I liked them for the funny memes that didn't take themselves too seriously, but overall the backlash to the show was extremely harsh and at times definitely unwarranted (especially the "woke" stuff). I can understand though if people didn't like it and that's ok - what's not ok is the harassment the cast has received because of it. Personally I think the scenery and some of the acting was really really good. The music especially I think deserves a lot of praise, it brought me back to the OG movies and just felt very LotR (barring that one orc song outro that I didn't really care for xD). That said, the writing was a bit....meh, the pacing slow at parts and some characters I did not care for at all. Galadriel (especially in the first season) felt written like a moody teen girl and grated on me - which is not the actress's fault, she did the best with what she was given and all the hate she's getting is just awful. Just because I didn't care for some of the characters the way they were written, doesn't mean I should go and harass them. Some story lines were better than others for sure: I really liked anything to do with the dwarves where most of the Numenor and harfoot parts left me a bit bored (which is a shame, I really liked the main cast of the Numenor part and enjoyed the visuals a lot!). Anyway, I'll still keep watching because any excuse to listen to the music and see beautiful scenery is good enough for me haha

It’s so damn distracting because instead of focusing on the story, I start wondering how this mixed population came about. Because shows like this usually provide zero explanation. The more I think about how the population came about, the less it makes sense. Even if you discount racism and just pretend racism isn’t a factor in this world, it still doesn’t make sense because after several generations of mixing, they would all be one race. In the 1990s the comedian Martin Lawrence did a movie where he was a black knight in a medieval world AS A JOKE, and now Hollywood is doing that for real and all the time! The Lord of Rings was not racist and was fine having all white people in it because it made sense for that world. Why does every setting have to look like downtown LA in 2024? It destroys the escapism. Most black people I talk to can’t stand it but white liberals are always defending it and I don’t know why. We never asked for this and I’m fine being left out of these stories.

That's true the writers should've been more creative and added additional lore like these dwarfs are black because they were the long lost tribe of the south and has once again made contact with the rest of the dwarves. Or something like that! It would make sense, right?
@StefunnyStrange

If people don’t understand what I mean…I also wanted to provide an example to help you understand. Pretend they did a story about fantasy ancient China and that 25% of the characters in that story were black. Also pretend that the population is never explained in that story. Pretend you just press play on the movie and that suddenly there are black characters walking around everywhere in this ancient fantasy China location. It would be so jarring to see that, would it not?Exactly. Well, the same consideration should be given to European settings. It’s no different. It is also weird because writers are just removing racism artificially from the world. They’re pretending race relations isn’t a thing which makes it an awkward experience and kinda insulting. Race not being a factor is just not believable because it is 100% normal for civilians of a world to reject or not like foreigners migrating in, even when those foreigners are white. So it’s just hard for me to believe that Middle-Earth would not only accept foreigners with no problems but black ones at that! 😂 Stop trying to play in our faces, Hollywood ! Boromir is probably rolling around in his damn grave watching these n*ggas in Middle-Earth! 😂 I’m just kidding but you get the point. And if the Rings of Power show runners are not trying to imply that the black people migrated in, and that they’ve already been in Middle-Earth since the beginning of recorded history, then that just creates an even BIGGER mess because like I said before, they should all be one homogeneous race if that’s the case because they would be mating and mixing with each other after multiple generations since racism doesn’t exist. Last I would like to add that people are assuming everyone who hates this type of stuff are “white alt right racists” when many people have an issue with it but are just silent because they don’t want to be accused of being a bigot. Even though these writers may have good intent and their heart might be in the right place, we know black people are only being added to these type of stories for politics, diversity and inclusion, and not for the story so it kinda feels like charity and is kinda insulting low key. I wish they would just get back to hiring creative geniuses and not activists. It is destroying film in my humble opinion.

@@54032ZepolRight. I genuinely wouldn’t mind if they had all black dwarves or something like that. That would actually make sense and wouldn’t even need explaining honestly. But the mixed populations for every race/species make little sense because that’s not how population growth works. I try to give stories like this a chance but then it becomes difficult because world building is very important to me in film. It’s hard to stay focused on a story when the world has fallen apart for you within the first 5 minutes of the film. I’ve found it very hard to escape lately and it’s just a bit frustrating because as a film lover and someone who has been through a lot, I used to watch film to escape from the stresses of life. Now I can’t do that because Hollywood feels like it has to make everything look like modern day America to match their ideologies. Even when I’m trying to give it my best effort to enjoy a show like this, in the back of my mind I’m thinking about how the world building and populations make no damn sense. I noticed that when we have cultural issues in our world like homophobia or racism, we tend to OVERcorrect problems. We always adjust things too much and create new problems by trying to eliminate the old ones like lack of diversity in film. And I would actually argue that Hollywood was ALREADY diverse and has been since the damn 80s! I’m so surprised that people don’t think movies and shows were already diverse. Black people make up only 13% of the US population but we make up like 50% of the cast in most big productions. The same goes for black people in the music industry. Lack of diversity in film seriously feels like a manufactured issue and not something based on actual facts and statistics. There are several problems with Hollywood but few black people in movies and shows wasn’t one of them I’m afraid.

Counterpoint: some of us are diehard Tolkien fans, but simply didn't enjoy the show bc the vibes just weren't there for us 😭 I tried to watch it, but I just never had fun or enjoyed it. I hated the elf haircuts (& the twigs n crap in the hobbits' hair), I don’t know why the elves were bullying each other as kids but that aint right, Elrond didn't look like Elrond, the whole "ooooh is this weird old dude kickin it w the hobbits Gandalf or Sauron?" felt like I was watching Dora the Explorer ask me whether a banana was yellow or blue... idk, it just never clicked or felt fun or even real. For some reason it just felt artificial. ONLY bit I enjoyed of what I saw was Disa + Durin, Disa was the absolute highlight and came damn near to redeeming the show, but I just couldn't sit thru that many hours just being depressed that the elves look and act like stinky humans bc they're mean girls w/ short hair 😭 I have no ill will towards people who do enjoy it, it just didn't click for me is all, and I think that apathy is a huge reason it sort of flopped compared to the expectations leading up to release. We just aren't vocal about it like the weirdo racists were, it's not like all Tolkien fans who don’t like the show are those sad excuses for "fans"... a lot of us just didn't like it for subjective reasons/vibes, same as any other TV show. For peak Tolkien adaptation/spiritual successor, I'd recommend Leonard Nimoy's "The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins" kzitem.info/news/bejne/t2mcwJyAh2aFl5gsi=ViKZNIxFzpsXPI0a

@@noellethomas2589 God forbid I refer to proto-hobbits, ancestral hobbits, hobbit precursors, whatever you want them to be termed, as "hobbits" for simplicity's sake (on a comment where I proceeded to recommend grainy footage of a silly song from the 60s as "peak Tolkien") 🙄 it's not that serious, & nitpicking terminology doesn't mean anything to the opinion I expressed on them I'm sorry to say it, but elves having long hair was _not_ something that Peter Jackson came up with. Overwhelmingly, when Tolkien described characters' hair, it was long. Elves had long hair. Men had long hair. Dwarves had long hair. IIRC, even the balrog & the ringwraiths had long hair. Long hair _was_ the norm. There are single-digit exceptions, like when Luthien cut her hair, or Eowyn cut hers. Both of them _had_ long hair in the first place to be able to cut it all off for a significant reason. If you really want to get into it, this ties into medieval perceptions of hair & its significance. But to be frank, even if it _was_ something that Peter Jackson made up, I still wouldn't like the short hair. My argument was not about canonical hair length as written by Tolkien, it was a _subjective_ opinion: that it was ugly and I didn't like it! Which he even _agrees with in the video_ - it's not that unpopular an opinion. And again, my issue was with elf children acting like absolute cruel little brats, not with adult elves being assholes. I don't think the _children_ were supposed to act like that, but again. Subjective 🤷♀

@@noellethomas2589 And yet, nothing about that excerpt states that all elves have short hair? That excerpt does _absolutely nothing_ for your argument. All it states is Finwë had _average length hair_ for his people. It does not state his hair or his people's hair is short, nor does it say it's long. And if you'll go back and check, my last comment clearly stated that Tolkien's descriptions were of _characters_ - so your last two sentences only restated my own. The difference here is that when I read many individual character descriptions and they *all* have long hair, with the only few exceptions being when it was previously long and cut short for an important reason, I find it reasonable to believe that long hair was the baseline/normal length.Yours, for some reason, is to assume that everybody else on Middle Earth actually had the same haircut as Chris Pratt. And again: _I do not CARE where "elves have long hair" came from, my subjective opinion was that short hair does not look good on them and I didn't like that choice from the show producers._ This is the issue you are choosing to blow way out of proportion. With all due respect, you really oughta chill out a little bit. Idk why you feel the need to prove that elves walk around looking like the average accountant, when again it had nothing to do w my original issue, but I promise you that there's no textual evidence you can find that will prove that, and it is NOT THAT SERIOUS 😭 try going for a walk and listening to the ballad of Bilbo Baggins. Idk, I think The Acolyte was canceled because it wasn’t very good. And look, I was looking forward to that series because it was marketed as a pre-Lucas-era/Skywalker-saga Star Wars story, and then I was even more excited for it when I learned that they cast Abigail Thorne, AND I got even more excited when I learned Carrie-Anne Moss was in it! (I wasn’t paying that much attention to the hype, so I learned about Abby well before I learned about Carrie-Anne because I am more plugged into the news about leftist KZitemrs than I am about the hype, love, and hate for Disney owned IP.) So, I watched it and it was just okay. Spoilers from here on out! Carrie-Anne Moss was great, but she is killed immediately and the whole story revolves around solving her murder. And her appearance and immediate exit from the series just feels cheap. Yes, she does show up in a few flashbacks but come on, why are you casting Matrix Mommy in your StarWars show? The Matrix and The Phantom Menace came out the same year but only one of them redefined sci-fi films for a generation, while the other one just kinda coasted on its legacy, and the massive budget that that legacy afforded. And then Abby shows up in episode 3. She has 3 lines, delivered very stiffly, and then the story moves away from any context where she might appear again. (And I know people have been roasting Abby recently for her appearance in House of the Dragon, but I don’t think the stiff delivery is her fault at all. I’m from Southern California, and I’ve known a few Hollywood, fart huffing pricks, AND at least 1 has-been and a couple of “never-will-be’s.” If you think a Hollywood production is gonna stop and let what they consider to be a cameo from a “lesser media,” a studio stunt casting, or just a gloried extra, try several takes, you know nothing about how the studio system works.) They didn’t give her much to do, and the result was fucking boring. Outside of the interesting cast, the story was just kinda boring.

I think things cancelled because someone with an Executive title decided they personally wanted to cancel it. People are always looking for these highly scientific reasons why things happen, things happen because people in high places make decisions, that's all it boils down to. They don't care if it was good, they don't care about the writing, the performers, all they care about it how does it serve them, does it make them money or not, does it fit an agenda they like. We see this with Netflix all the time, shows with a loyal audience that are well regarded by critics and audiences alike are cancelled because they aren't bringing in the numbers. It's all down to that, honestly.

I hate the anti woke 'critics' so much they skew the perception of media so much it's annoying. Funny thing is there are genuine criticisms to be made about this show but they get buried under the mountains of anti woke hate. Same goes for other shows like The Acolyte. I feel like this type of storytelling is a massive waste of time (for me personally, please don't get offended, anyone). I have no problem if other people find joy in these. It's fine. 2. I do agree with you on the anti-woke youtubers however. I think they will hate everything that comes out with a few exceptions because this is just the way they make money and attract views. Its a business, its making bread, and paying taxes and rent, and it's ugly. I can thank Rings of Power, however, for opening my eyes about that. When I watched the first season I had my arguments for why I don't want to continue watching and they were completely different from what these guys were yelling to me from the screen. I think the overall backlash Rings of Power has reminds me of why, as an artist myself, I like to think back to Anton Ego's review in Ratatouille: _"But the bitter truth we critics must face, is that in the grand scheme of things, the average piece of junk is probably more meaningful than our criticism designating it so."_ Don't get me wrong. Show is not perfect. Nothing is. Perfection would be boring. But really, at worst, it gets stagnant at points, and at best, it has some pretty solid stuff to say about certain perspectives on Tolkien's lore. I'd much rather see some new people try newer takes on classics from differing perspectives than another grey live-action Disney remake, that's for sure. Like, if anybody here still thinks Rings of Power is an absolute abomination to its source material, go see the first two Alien movies, then see Aliens vs. Predator Requiem. THAT movie will give you something to cry about! PS - I wonder if the people who deduct points from Rings of Power for not being wholey accurate to the source material have ever seen the 1953 cinematic adaptation of War of the Worlds produced by George Pal. Wells in the original novel describes the Martian tripods in good detail making sure to describe the odd metallic tentacles potruding from below, the heat ray coming out from some sort of flexible arm, the rooflike tops, and their ability to fire canisters of black smoke. In the 1953 cinematic adaptation they're not even tripods. They're hovercrafts shaped like mantarays with cobra arms portruding from the top, and their secondary weapon has been completely changed to some sort of anti-matter green laser that fires from the arms of the main body. And that's just the Martian warmachines. Wait until you see how the odd gooey Simon game faced aliens are nothing like the bear-sized octopus-like Martians with V-shaped beaks, sixteen tentacles, black beady eyes, bulbous heads, and they use machinery to drink the blood of humans.

I literally only started watching it because the vitriol online was so loud and constant, I had to see what was 'the worst show ever'. I found it strangely fun and enjoyable - certainly a few silly moments, but the original movies had silly moments too. I'm looking at you, Legolas sliding down a staircase on a shield shooting a bow and arrow and Gollum... like most of gollum lol. But compared to most shows these days the quality is pretty good - writing seems decent, characters all sound like they belong in the universe, there are no weird modern day speakers (the Willow reboot had actors that sounded like they were on modern day tiktok, I couldn't even get through the first episode). The people losing their mind over this show being 'bad' would have loved this show if it had come out exactly the same as-is but back in 2012. They've gaslit themselves into hating content that they would have adored, but their heads are so far up their own asses they can't see it. It's wild, honestly. As someone that's been into Fantasy-everything since like 1980, I've seen a lot of good and a lot of schlock; bad fantasy is certainly out there, but Rings of Power isn't it. Plot's understandable, sets and CGI is good, costumes look nice, settings are beautiful ~ it honestly ticks most of the boxes for a good fantasy show. The only reason you wouldn't like it is if you're bringing in modern-day nonsense in your own head and deciding to be angry about it - or that one scene with Disa and the bats, which I kinda thought was very silly, but that's one scene in two seasons of show - I think that's pretty good. I enjoyed the Witcher at first but even that show had a much more discoordinated look/costuming/CGI/nonsensical lore, in spite of having plenty of support. Clearly making an A+ fantasy tv show isn't easy peasy lemon squeezy, even GOT shat the bed with the last season.
