I started playing drums in 1980. I was a big Ludwig snare drum fan right from the beginning. In EVERY decade, every snare drum "specialist" told me that the shells from the decade before sounded BETTER than the actual shells. So when i started, the shells of the late 60s and early 70s were the holy grail. And RIGHT NOW, everybody says that the drums of the early 80s and 90s were the best!! Oh man, don't believe this crap. In my experience after 45 years, Ludwig made in ALL DECADES outstanding and less superior sounding shells, and really NOBODY can tell why this is. Everything else is a total myth !! In 1989 i had a drum duet with my best drummer friend and we ordered two black beauties at the same store. After unpacking and tuning them to the same spot we IMMEDIATELY decided that one sounded better than the other. On recordings at that time the difference of the tone was absolutely insignificant

You know, I'm totally with you as a skeptic of the "magic" shell formula. I personally believe you get a much bigger difference from hoops, hardware, bearing edges, etc. (disregarding heads, obviously). Funny enough, I also chose my personal Black Beauty when the drum shop got 3 or 4 in stock at the same time, and I picked the one I thought was a gem. This Rick Allen snare, at least in my brief comparison, sounded better than mine. I won't speak definitively on why that is, since there are several meaningful differences included shell formula, hoops, hardware, and the entire super sensitive system.

The room and the cast hoops do a lot of the work though, right? What a great sounding drum!

The room - definitely. I also believe hoops make a big difference but this one has regular triple flange.

I've always heard that it was on Ride the Lightning-album Rick Allens BB was used?!
@ColeParamore ah, my bad, think I heard on podcast about the legendary BB, the Rick Allen ownership was right at least...from now on...MoP

In my opinion, none of the Metallica albums, up until the Black album, don't have something special about their respective snare sounds. Black album, on the other hand, has that legendary Tama bell brass. None of the previous albums can beat that

This was just an ad for your sample pack with no real info about the drum. What year were the plastic washers put on? Did you change the heads?
@ColeParamore

It's both, and I don't think they're mutually exclusive. It's a story about the drum, a demo, and a promo for the samples, none of which are particularly lengthy sections. I'm not sure if the washers question is an earnest one, but as far as heads, yes I changed the batter head to a Coated Ambassador. The one currently on it is signed by Rick Allen, so I definitely wasn't going to mess that up lol.

@ColeParamore There's a debate on KZitem about new Black Beauties coming with plastic washers and gaskets. Some people remove them because they swear the drum rings out more.

@@User-vl6xl I don't think it's possible to know that history with the number of owners this drum had and the number of different studios it went in/out of. At the end of the day I'm interested in who used it and what it sounds like, so those were my focuses.

For recording the Black Album, Lars used Gretsch drums, a 15" Rock Hats by Sabian and the Bell Brass. He kept the bass drums and floor toms, hi hat and the snare drum for Load, Reload and Garage Inc. recordings, adding Tama rack toms.
