Like you, when I listen to Rush it takes me somewhere else. This song speaks to me about how we are all here for the blink of an eye and how nice it would be to really appreciate everything and everyone around us, and how we often fail to do just that. Children growing up and missing out on beautiful, lost memories. Old friends (and family) dying and the regrets of maybe not being a better friend to them. I think "the innocence slips away" refers to growing up and facing life. I have often wondered what Neil was meaning by 'experience slips away". Perhaps not as sharp of a minds as we used to have when younger? One thing is for sure...today's music doesn't make you sit speechless (like you did, and we all do) and ponder the meaning of life.

I can see.. this song hits different when you're 54 like me and realize more than half your life is gone. And still relishing in thise amazing moments feom the 70s 80s 90s it will be decades till times are good like that again imo

Children growing up, old friends growing older *sniff*. Bass lines are incredible, but also try to catch how Neil changes the fill at end of every line in the chorus to make it unique, subtle but so powerful. Rush on!

Yep, the video is a cheesey school project, but the song? The song and its sentiment is so beautiful. If you haven't heard the US Army performing it as a tribute to Niel Peart's passing, I strongly suggest that one as well.

Many of us appreciated this song and video for the sheer fact that Rush was not standing still and were willing to experiment and stretch themselves so don't believe the haters.

Aimee Mann ('Til Tuesday - lead singer on 80's hauntingly beautiful hit "Voices Carry") camera operator and backing vocalist here. As fellow bassists, she and Geddy became friends and they invited her to sing backing vocals and appear in the video. Pretty cool. She's remained active in the music world for the past 4 decades.

He hasn’t done it yet??? This imbalance in our collective life force must be righted. No, really, Dame. You need to hear the 2012 version of The Garden, which was performed live in Dallas for the Clockwork Angels Tour (which was their penultimate tour).

The accompanying signer is Aimee Mann, probably best known as the lead signer for a US new wave band called Til Tuesday. For film fans, however, she is best known for her solo work that appeared on films such as Jerry McGuire and Magnolia. She’s a great signer/songwriter in her own right and, as such, I’d recommend you react to a few of her songs: - “Voices Carry’ [with Til Tuesday] - “Wise Up” [Jerry McGuire & Magnolia soundtracks] - “Save Me” [Magnolia Soundtrack (which was full of Mann’s music)]

One should remember that no time in life is perfect. That being said, two years come to mind for me, 1985, highlighted by the second half my Freshman year in High School, and 1997 which included my wedding and the time I still lived in Arizona. Both represented hope and anticipation for the future. I'm now 54 and much of life has passed by. While I'm still anxious for what the future has in store for my wife and I, I feel like there were many things that were missed as time flew by.

This song hits me SO much harder now at 55 than it did at 18 when it came out. I just wasn't mature enough back then to get it.

Neil's lyrics, many of them, when you look at them closely, are poetic prose, that really allows each individual to take something a little different from his meaning, when you listen!!!

I'm new to seeing your channel but, this reminds me of a favorite saying. You may not have enough time but, you have all there is. Which is similar to you statement about everyone has 24 hours a day. You may also enjoy Time by Pink Floyd from Dark Side of the Moon as it hits some of the same thoughts about how young people "fritter and waste" their time and then 10 years have got behind you. Always hits home.

Sorry about your Lions Dame. The catch off the DB's facemask was a killer! Love this song (I turned 60 last year and "child growing up and old friends are getting older") and I always cringe watching this video. Especially Geddy's Daniel Boone haircut. 😄

You appreciate this song more when you came to the point in your life when you realize you have more time behind you than you have ahead of you. So if you're lucky you make every effort to make each moment a little bit longer and each sensation a little bit stronger. drink it in my brothers and sisters and all the others who do not fall into such simple constructs.

Dude, I know. I'm a Cowboys fan since old school late 70's. Never set a foot in Texas, born and raised in The San Fernando Valley in So. Cal. The Lion's have had a special place in my heart going way back. I was going to put a grand down on them at the beginning of the year. Now I'm glad I didn't. Oh yeah. I've been a Rush fan since 1981. I'm meant a huge Rush fan. Take care and be well. Rush on eh!!! 🙂

I hope you won't take that comment by thatsnice99 seriously; he's been consistently trashing this song, along with everything else on Hold Your Fire, for at least as long as I've been on KZitem. I really like it because of how the lyrics have become increasingly relevant as I've grown older, even more so since I've had to make major changes to my life after my brother died in 2022. Another song I like from this album is Turn The Page, which can be found on their A Show Of Hands concert video, and whose lyrics also speak of how time keeps moving on. Cheers from Toronto! 🎤 🎹 🎸 🥁 🎸 🐐 🐐 🐐
