An extremely helpful video for a person like me who always had a doubt on his skills and knowledge whether I am good enough for getting a Ph.D scholarship or not. eventhough I have 2 international scopus index journals plus 1 conference paper and I have took the IELTS test with overall band 7.0, I think all i have to focus right now is GRE and SOP letter. thanks a lot, your videos really motivate me.

This video hit home 😊 I've been delaying and have analysis paralysis when trying to write my personal statement and with completing applications on account of self doubt. Thank you for the encouragement ❤

I can totally understand that feeling! It can be SOOO hard to talk about ourselves ESPECIALLY when it's related to an application that gets evaluated by people we don't know! I am glad this video help you feel a little better! If you want more guidance to help with the analysis paralysis maybe this other video might be useful! It shares major questions to answer in your personal statement! kzitem.info/news/bejne/t4qOna5rZp5kqHY

Thank you! I was starting to worry after I had an interview that made me feel stupid (the school made me list three potential mentors when I only wanted to work with one, and luckily it wasn’t the one I want to work with-the other interviews went well!). Still waiting to hear back from four more schools.

Hi!! I'm sorry you had an experience that made you feel stupid. Honestly it is IMPOSSOBLE to know what you don't know and it always bothers me when ppl try and make others feel silly for not knowing everything! I am happy to hear your interviews went well!! Please keep me updated I'd love to know how everything turned out!

My dream is to go back to ucla and get my PhD in social psych. I did a sociology undergrad at ucla and have 6 years of research experience in both quant and qualitative research. I really needed to hear this video rn because I’ve been so insecure. Especially when I reached out to a professor at usc and she said “oh you belong in sociology”. BUT the research I want to do is related to belonging and identity! I’ve really followed your videos because it’s helped me cope with this process. I cry every night because I really want this.

Hi Renee!!! I am soo soo happy this video gave you some confidence! If you want to go to grad school then I think you definitely should!!! Now I don't know much about your goals or research, but I do want to say... when it comes to phd research you can research the sam topic in a VARIETY of different programs. Now you might hate sociology and how Sociologist do research and that is enough of a reason to not pursue a soc PhD. I personally know absolutely nothing about social psych phds. But I do know you can study identity in a variety of different programs, from soc, to culture studies, political science heck even anthropology!!! So I think if there are people saying you belong in soc it might be because they totally understand how your research questions could be answered and supported by sociological methods!!! Regardless if you want it! Then I say go get it!!! You deserve it! And you totally can get it. Also if anything I said seemed at all confusing I have this video that kind of presents a walk through on how to find your prefect phd program. So it much be helpful! But also might not if you already know what you want!!! kzitem.info/news/bejne/k2pm0ah_pKCEm3o

@@BrisaMarie Hi Bri, first of all thank you so much for providing mean very detailed response! It helps to know that my interest can greatly align with other fields including sociology. Just a little bit of background about me but the reason why I ended up doing a bachelors in sociology was because when I got into UCLA I was missing a few courses for psychology, and I got in with sociology but even as I was in the school I was trying to find ways to go back to Psychology and never follow through. I am applying to grad school with the intention of completely going back to my original dream which was to become a social psychologist, and I’m so afraid of my past of letting that go haunting me during my application process. While I love learning about other research methods such as in sociology and anthropology, I really want to go back to social psychology. It’s a very competitive field however I also come with a masters in international law which I obtained abroad. And I see that one of the professors at UCLA has a background in political science as well, he responded to me saying that he was taking grad students for next year and social psychology so I’m really hoping that I can get accepted! I wanted to ask you whether you provide assistance services in reading PS? I can imagine you already have a busy schedule but thought I’d ask 💙

That's amazing!!! It's also great that you already have located a professor that is accepting students you seem SUPER PREPARED!!! Unfortunately at this time I can't review applications though I probably wouldn't be much help since I know very little about social psychology BUT I would really encourage you to reach out to current grad students in the program!!! They are the experts and usually are very helpful! I'm sorry I couldn't be more hands on. But i really hope you keep me updated!!

@@BrisaMarie sorry for the delayed response! Been working on my PS and SOP for UCLA all day to the point that I’ve burnt out lol I’m trying to make it as perfect as possible. I appreciate your support and that’s totally okay, I mean you’re in another really cool field anyways so it’s understandable that you don’t know much about social psych. I figured that you would be super busy, and I appreciate the honesty. I’ll keep you posted and continue to support your channel. Also forgot to mention that I’ll be attending a Pathways to Phd event and having a 1:1 with a grad student!

You don't need publications to get into a PhD... but do you need research experience? I'm an undergrad... Seeing if I could maybe skip the masters and go straight to the PhD (education/psychology).

I have a question about the application. As you know American schools don't ask for a research proposal to be admitted. However, most European Universities require a detailed research proposal of 4500 or sometimes 6000 words. Now, this may sound fair, but how can I safeguard the IP of my research if let's say my application is rejected while the concept and topic of my research is taken by the faculty for future research? I tried to ask one the admission team at one of the universities I'm interested in, but then I was referred from one faculty member to another and haven't gotten a response. Any insight on this dilemma?
@BrisaMarie
Жыл бұрын
Hi Jason, I don't really have much familiarity with the European process. I think there probably really isn't any way to protect your research topic 100%, but I would imagine it is not common practice to steal people's ideas (unless maybe you are in STEM where certain things are easier to replicate). I think your best bet would be to try to make a strong relationship with the PI you intend to work with to build trust. It may also be possible that the people reviewing your application are not the actually researchers that you will be working with and so there may be less of a chance to "take your idea." I imagine it is highly unlikely but not impossible. And since I am unfamiliar I really can't provide anything more than this speculation! I am hope this is somewhat helpful.

@Brisa Marie - Future PhD Thank you for your insight. I actually received a reply from the university that there is no such a mechanism to protect the research ideas of PhD applicants. So I just have to take a chance at it, based on their response. On the other hand, I heard from another Vloger on KZitem who is also a professor was saying that stealing ideas is common in the academic world,. I spent lots of weeks until I found a knowledge gap in a hot topic in the Organizational Behaviour field, and it will really hurt to know someone would take my research questions and planned collection of articles (anthology) and give it to someone else in the academia. Also, their admission process is centralized, so even if I find a faculty member who would support my project, it's still up to the admission committee to decide on approving my application.

I wish you luck! There are a lot of things to consider but you may want to apply to some schools in the US so you don't have to divulge too much of your research if that is a major concern. Either way I really wish you luck!!
