I have had my eye on this stem for years but thought "nah, it's not worth the $$, it can't be that much better", but I was so wrong. I bought one this summer for my 700c gravel bike and could not believe how much it reduced the hand/arm pain and numbness I would get from chunky rough gravel. I now have a second Shockstop stem for my Cutthroat that I'll be installing this weekend. Awesome product!

For what it's worth, went to 165 cranks from 170 a month ago. Now 170 feels horrible. I'm an average sized guy who has been a roadie for 50 years. A real surprise.

I run a RedShift Stem with mid range resistance. At first I thought that they were useless. Then all of a sudden I realized that I wasn't getting ulnar nerve numbness in my lateral palm, ring finger and baby finger. No matter what padded gloves I used, I always used to get numbness on long rides. This stem kills that road buzz. If you go in a big pot hole or over a drop, you'll still get a bang - these aren't suspension in that sense. There's a little bit of bounce going over smaller holes for sure though. The great thing though is that they are quite stiff for normal road riding and don't give a power eating bounce going up steep hills - even when standing up and hauling on the bars. After a low back injury last year (golf, not cycling) I'm running a 30 degree stem. Looks a bit goofy, but it opens my back up and I still get that comfort in my hands. Can't be a common item, but I'm glad they had it. Nice presentation, clear, thoughtful, and right to the point. Never thought about the shoulder blades, but I'll be checking now. Est-ce-que cette presentation disponible en Francais?

Thanks for pointing me to your review. I've had bad experiences with various "suspension " stems over my almost 30 years cycling plus working in the cycle industry has made me a bit cynical .

Take off your old bar tape, foam pipe insulation cut down the middle and stick to the top of the bars ,then retake the bars. That's the game changer. Reduces vibration massively. The tem is just another marketing tactic that you don't need. 😊

Only issue is that if you are in the drops you get no suspension effect. It is behind the pivot point. So that is something you should consider
@Al.2

Yes you do - the lever is not that much different but the force probably is higher because you rest more of your weight in the drops, so the torque is probably even bigger in the drops.

I don't think this is a “brand new product”. I've had one on my bike for 3 years. I'm very happy with it. The only negative point is that the operation to change the degree of damping is complicated and time-consuming. So, the setting I initially chose is a little too hard for my taste, but I'm too lazy to redo the whole procedure. I wish they'd come up with a simpler system than all those colored rubbers that require you to remove the handlebars.

Just bought this for a flat bar hybrid with rigid fork. Totally works, though it's weird that while I feel less shaking and vibrations, my small mirror attached to a bar end now shakes a lot more because the bar itself moves with the stem.

It all depends on whether you wear Lycra or not. I've been riding a full-suspension bike over five thousand miles yearly since 2015, so I'm not wearing Lycra. People wearing Lycra are less inclined to ride full-suspension bikes, so they need add-on accessories to make the ride less harsh and more enjoyable. I'm surprised there isn't a bobblehead seat post on it also.

It's not that bad, when PULLING up on the bars the stem is locked in place (no absortion) so it make for great power transfer. But of course, will loose a bit of power when the weight goes back down. But at the end of the day, if you're sprinting for a finish-line in a road race, it's not a product for you I'd say ahah!!

Not necessarily...most front suspension forks on XC bikes don't activate on the small bumps of gravel. My 100 mm Rock Shox fork might as well be a rigid fork on most gravel roads. It's possible that higher end models from FOX would solve that problem, I don't know.
