I broke my neck and jaw 21 years ago, and I’ve been doing some of your exercises to deal with this horrendous rib pain I get in both the front and back of my rib cage. Last night after doing your exercises, I could finally breathe well enough to sleep thru the night. I was relaxed in a way that I’ve not felt since before the accident. Thank you so much.

Your videos are excellent. I’ve been watching other professionals on KZitem but hasn’t helped as much as your video’s and exercises. I have chronic pain and I’ve been feeling relief in places I’ve been dealing with pain for many years and I’m still in my twenties. Some solutions are surprisingly simple yet complex by needing this knowledge from a professional who really knows what they’re talking about. You are very knowledgeable and easy to understand. Thank you for your content, it is life saving!!! 🙏

I have rather prominent forward head posture with significant upper back rounding and rolled shoulders. When flat on my back, my hands are easily able to touch the ground in external rotation (without any shoulder or rib pop up, I made sure), while I have limited movement in internal rotation. This is the opposite of how things should be for me according to your video. I'd love to understand why this is.

I am the same. I would go with the chest opener anyway because you need to expand manubrium and sternum which are compressed. Your good external rotation Comes from that you are extended at your low back, so keep a neutral pelvis when doing it

Hey Conor! Thanks for your videos. I've been trying to understand posture and anatomy (trying to correct my own fhp), and seeing these breathing approaches from you and some other youtubers, after several trials and errors, I started understanding the overall mechanism. I am kinda geeky and curious about these things, how they work, so I took the long route. Anyway... I've noticed my rib cage getting less extended (back to front I mean) and flares disappearing in two days after I got it right! I even felt some ab insertions (or maybe fat pads? not sure lol) moving and releasing things. Thanks for that! As I am looking for the "rib cage lift" in order to correct the forward head posture (and definitely that is the issue), I just wanna make sure I am doing things correctly: the breathing should be done by inhaling with serratus anterior and pec minor, and exhaling should be done only with side abs (pec minor ends up being released inevitably of course). Would you say this is correct? Thank you again. Nice work! P.S.: it is impressive to feel the rib cage going up to the sky when you learn to disengage the 6-pack!

Conor thank you for your content and to get viewers to do more root cause analysis. Based on what I have been seeing, the body seems to make adjustments to breathe better. Is it possible that tightness of the jaw (TMJ)/jaw placement can compromise breathing and indirectly force the body to get into poor posture?

11:45 As someone with more external rot., I just wanted to ask if the keeping the feet flat at a 90 degree angle also important while sitting throughout the day? Because I'm usually sitting on a chair that is relatively higher and a) either my feet aren't flat on the ground or b) my knees have more than a 90 degree angle (pointing down - are below my hip level). Does this also maybe lead to external rotation of the ribcage/hip?
@SammySamer12

Yup, that's a main and very important point of ergonomics and ergonomic chairs/tables, making sure you're able to comfortable sit with your knees at 90°

QUESTION to the professional: If you have posture problems, could it help to sleep on a large pillow on your back (like in this video) so that your chest is automatically higher when you sleep on your back? Or would that be nonsensical?

Team 2 👍 the pillow exercise sucked 😂 which means it's probably pretty good, also no wonder I feel more relaxed when I allow myself to sit with "poor" posture sometimes.

This summer I suffered from lumbar pain so severe I was unable to work my construction job for almost 2 months. I have narrowed the cause primarily to my faulty breathing patterns. The expansion of the back part of the ribcage described in this video is essential. The ribs truly must be able to expand in all directions as a balloon and putting limits to this will cause problems throughout the body. Sitting in a chair with a backrest(car seat, office chair, etc.) prevents this and is what I belive to be a leading cause of neck, thoracic- and lumbar pain. Sitting too close to your desk restricts your belly from expanding. I would like to put emphasis on the physiological sigh described in this video, tons of research show this to be a protocol that effectively reduces stress, tension and even ADHD symptoms(which I do have a clinical diagnosis of). The breath truly is the corner stone of health. Pay attention to how often you hold your breath/breathe shallow when in front of a screen. My #1 tip: Use a stool(or sit at the edge of your chair) for 1 week and you will be amazed how many pains and aches will diminish. Source: 8 years of experimentation and layman research, Huberman podcast, Pete Walker, James Nestor, Esther Gokhale to name a few on the top of my head. English is not my first language so please ask if anything is unclear or confusing. Hope this is of help to somebody else, thank you so much for putting out this content Mr. Harris, a gift to the world.

Have you ever researched the Alexander technique. According to its teachings your "fixed" posture in the thumbnail is still not "good" posture. Surely a man as expertised as you has come across it, I am wondering what your opinions are?

I would like to see just 1 before and after proof that anyone's posture has been fixed by anyone anywhere. Not picking on you because I like some of your back pain stuff. But there's zero chance breathing exercises are going to change a lifetime of bad posture. Prove me wrong with a real before and after person.... please
@Lotusdreams

Counter point: It works both ways. I happen to work with people that have illnesses in regards to breathing but also "normal" patients. The posture of each patient in the first group has pronounced postural abnormalities, far more and my therapy tries to fix this and enable more efficient breathing. The posture did change, over time ofc, even in the harder cases. Normal people are easier to treat in that regard, it's just that the differences are smaller. I can tell you by measurements and tests that there is more movement within the trunk immediately. Try it and use a tape measure before and after. No need to take anyones word. Posture is a reaction, not an illness that needs to be fixed. Its the bodies answer to every day living that forces you down this road

@Lotusdreams I've had bad posture probably from my teens, likely due to lack of confidence/extreme shyness. I'm 58 now. I'm confident, I work out, I do and have tried tons of breathing exercises. I've watched at least a dozen of Connors videos not to mention hundreds of hours of others. My posture might be slightly better. But I've tried so many things over the years and it finally occurred to me.... everyone has a thumbnail or example like the one Connor is using.... which is someone with good posture leaning forward.... because they don't have actual examples of people they fixed. That said I believe you helped people who have tried nothing, or are just in poor health get "some" improvement. I mean I'll walk around for weeks forcing good posture. I'll do every YT recommended stretch, exercise and recently PRI breathing exercises. But if I stand naturally for 1 second I seem 40 years of poor posture staring right back at me.

while I agree with your general sentiment 100%, since it frustrates me as well, there are still exceptions. My swayback posture was gone almost in an instant once I've relaxed my pelvic floor and started breathing by consciously moving my diaphragm down and opening up room for the intestines by relaxing the pelvic floor, instead of protruding my belly forward (which I've done for years). I still have a bad posture, but this has shown me it's possible to achieve the sudden change these PRI guys are talking about.
