From Nintendo’s GameCube to Sony’s PlayStation 2, the entire sixth generation of consoles and the handhelds of that era brought with them loads of games that prominently featured water as a main mechanic and/or world building tool.
We’ve seen games like The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, Super Mario Sunshine, and Pokemon Emerald, Ruby and Sapphire have this seemingly odd fascination with water as a focal point in the games.
What was the reason for this? In this video, I try to make sense of this phenomenon in the gaming world of the early to mid 2000s.
As I mentioned towards the end of the video, we have games like Genshin Impact, Breath of the Wild, and even more recently, Elden Ring and many other open world titles becoming the forefront of many studios advertising around their games’ releases.
Let me know your thoughts on this in the comments / what you think we might see next in terms of studios trying to flex their production
