I had two Sigma Cameras. They are the most infuriating, slow and complicated to use cameras on the planet, but when you get a good shot and the camera actually wrote it to the card, the results were breathtaking. I've owned an fpL and used it exclusively for landscape photography since 2021. I think this is a VERY fair review of the camera - it has good points and it has not so good, but as you mentioned EVERY camera system out there also has points like this (they'll be different and personal to each of us). I'd really like to see Sigma to promote this camera more because it has so much potential. An excellent review Tom.

I luv mine. I have the 16-28, 28 to 70, lumix 70-300 - with a TTArtisan 50mm as my walkabout lens. The form factor is my favorite feature - almost M43 kit size. Dynamic range is so over the top don’t even miss flash opportunities. Surprised you didn’t mention its limitations when it comes to Flash photography - it would have given you an opportunity to discuss its in-camera backlighting features. Still want an FP L. I shoot video on two Sigma FP bodies and one Panasonic S1H. When I use an fp as a stills camera I toss a small lens on and can put it in a jacket pocket or cargo pocket easy. Something I super love with my L mount caneras is a EF to L adapter that has a VND built in, and i adapt old lenses like the helios 44 and other soviet glass. The L is just so fun as a tiny power house, and batteries are cheap since it uses the same battery the Lumix G7 and similar cameras.

I’ve had an fp for three years and, it’s just another camera in my kit. I was never in a “should I get this one or that one” situation. When the fp came out, I replaced a Leica Q with the fp. The fp has Japanese build quality, is diminutive in size, is in the L-Mount alliance, and uses the same battery as the Q. I can shoot a lot of lenses on this camera including Leica S, L and M; Voigtlander M; and Sigma L. I use it predominately for stills, and it excels quite nicely in that capacity. There is a “get to know me factor” with the fp, but isn’t that true of all cameras? That shot of the guy that you took with the rolling shutter never happens. If I want to take fast moving action shots, I reach for another camera. However, it is possible to get some action shots if you know what works and what doesn’t. Overall, it’s a great camera to add to your bag(s), and the photos that it produces are excellent.

Even just shooting 12bit RAW in 1080p and later upscaling to 4K in Davinci will give you a much nicer image than most 10bit 4K or 6K prosumer cameras out there. The colour science in this thing is on the level of a Sony Venice that costs $50.000. If you can wrap your head around the quirks and find a workflow that suits you this thing is something really special. The original FP is better than the FP L at video. Rigged with a cage, top handle and external monitor/recorder it's a cine beast.

I heard a similar thought in the video, (11:03), but thats not a cost friendly proposition for many, as Sony (E/FE mount) and Sigma (L-mount) are two different lens mount systems. If I already have L mount lenses I’m suppose to ditch all that for a Sony where I’d have to rebuy all these lenses? Thats expensive. Versus those already on L-mount can get more milage out of their existing lens investment by using them on the Sigma as well.

Why did I buy one. Best bang for buck for my needs. I think the name perfectly reflects what the camera is. Fortissimo - Big capability, Pianissimo - Small size, humble. But also the flexibility - rig it up with power dummy battery gimbal cinema lense focus pull go as big as you want it can handle all of it (CinemaDNG 12-Bit 4K DCI 2-hour non stop recording) or slap a pancake or small DC DN zoom lense on it and a few spare batteries for travel everyday carry and call it a day. The price for completely fully made and assembled in Japan is amazing value. For the third iteration IBIS will be at the top of the wish list and faster readout or no compromises global shutter (but cmon lets be real), flippy screen not needed prefer the solid feel of the current screen. From my own personal use the biggest drawbacks are IBIS and readout speed (banding in artificial light) both can be worked around but still will be nice to have on future iteration without sacrificing the size and weight.

I was fully on the FP bandwagon for years with the original (non 61MP version). Haven’t found a camera even today that can do what the FP can at its size and price (4K CDNG RAW VIDEO is crazy). Ultimately sold it for my A7IV. Great video!
@jessehavok4181

What made you sell it? Is the a7IV that much better of a camera?
@TacticalCactusMedia
6 ай бұрын
@@jessehavok4181 I feel like most cameras in today's day and age meet the spec requirements to be considered 'good', so choosing the right one is more about matching a specific cameras strengths to the type of work you do. My work is 80% video, 20% photo for clients, and I also do content creation. The FP's image quality destroys almost every other camera I've ever compared it to, but it lacks a lot of other features that become important to workflow, ease of use, and efficiency. I use an FX3 as my main video camera, and as much as I loved the FP, I realized it was overkill for what I needed it for. Too much time was being lost trying to color match two cameras with different color sciences so I swapped it out for the A7IV. Now I have two bodies in the same ecosystem, lens mount, color science, etc.
@jessehavok4181
6 ай бұрын
@@TacticalCactusMediaI find that really interesting, because you could get 4 or 5 of the FPs for the price of those two bodies. Then you wouldn't need to worry about matching colors. The fx3 must really be worth the money.
@TacticalCactusMedia

@@jessehavok4181 Using the FP as a cinema camera is where it truly shines. When you can be behind the camera and rig it out a bit, you can really take advantage of the incredible IQ, colors, and CDNG RAW. Once you enter any type of run and gun environment or a scenario where you need to film yourself, it quickly becomes incredibly frustrating to use. If you are a solo freelancer running multiple cameras at once, the lack of timecode, continuous AF, and poor internal preamps for audio presents problems. You can't use the FP for streaming, podcasts, or as a webcam because you cannot charge it over USB-C while the camera is on. The FX3 in my experience is the perfect blend of incredible image quality paired with ease of use features that makes it much more applicable to a wider range of filming scenarios, at least for the work that I do. If what I did involved being behind the camera 100% of the time, I'd still have the FP.

Likely to sell more if it was designed with a Sony instead of Leica lens mount.

Sigma Contemporary lenses are cheaper than Sony and superb quality. You can buy a 45mm for around $200 ex-demo.

So, as long as a photograher/videographer isn't prone to premature ejaculation yet not a stamina adherent, it could be a solid second?

Dood, I'm not spending $1,200 for a camera. You don't even get a lens with it.

I looked good at first glance, but you show the design choices were not well thought out.

1:44 Did something terrible happen to your upload here, or is this footage not from the Sigma fPL? The images look terrible for something that isn't an old phone or a newish GoPro. I had to double check that video resolution was indeed on 4k. I know that the fPL doesn't usually look like this, so WTF?

what is the point of slim camera when we have giganticlenses?! no point at all. I would rather have SOny E Bionet on SOny SMartphone so I could swap a prof lens if I want. But tiny camera make no sense

Too many negatives to deal with to be used as a travel camera.. maybe if you want to deliberately shoot with a “semi-filmcamera” experience?

I’m curious how you’d compare this to the Sony RX1r ii for photography
