Almost nothing in the world will beat those northeastern New England forests. It's just....I don't know how to describe it, you have to go there and see...I'd say...."clean" feeling? I think that's it, it just feels very very very 'clean' up there. Down here now in North Carolina it feels gnarly, messy and swampy.

I am also a native Vermonter: Why Vermont what? I grew-up in Burlington, Vt. I worked with Ben & Jerry's. I walked down Willard St. with Bernie when he was mayor. I could not wait to leave and am very glad I did. Living in VA now for over 39 years. This is a very cold place to live, freezing most of the time. I guess if one is rich this would be a nice place. No jobs, people living on the streets in very cold weather staying close to the man hole covers to stay warm. Housing/property tax is very high for what one gets, most houses are like over 80 years old in Burlington and falling down (DON'T BUT). St. Alban's bay NEVER buy, bad move, in that area you will smell raw sewage and you will not be able to sell. Crime is way up, watch your back if you go. YUK

I went to college in Middlebury. I did enjoy my time there to some extent, but the place did make me really depressed in the winter...it was sometimes really rough to be there. I think it takes a tougher sort of person to be there, and, though there was that wonderful small town charm and all the fall colors and wonderful nature, it takes real adjustment to get used to rural life. There are some real trade-offs and you need to weigh them carefully if you're going to go rural. I would be willing to bet that most people couldn't handle it. But...even though I didn't stay in Vermont, it was ultimately good for my soul to be there.

You poor thing. We are very tough. This is why we wear the badges on our vehicles, “Vermont Strong and Tough too”. Truth to that. Many city folk struggle to have bears and raccoons as neighbors but we cherish it! No noise, no pollution, no crime, complete privacy and acceptance. The winters are not difficult. Not if you are native. It’s actually welcomed and we do enjoy our winter sports. Just bundle up! So much to do all year around in this state. Your negative feelings are yours and you can keep them. Let everyone else make their own decisions. Thanks. Equal opportunity and equal rights here.

We have lived in Vermont for 27 years and loved it. The people are mostly kind and some of them real Vermonters are very quirky. In Vermont, if your family haven’t born and lived there for three generations, you are not Vermonter! They are not impressed by your high profile job or what you have. People value your work ethics, kindness and independence. The best place to raise a family. It is rural, but not backward. There are tradition of holding town meetings, very liberal. Look at Bernie Sanders (socialist senator), Pat Lehey, James Jeffords. The first state to recognize the same sex marriage. After our retirement we moved to a New York community near by. If you are senior citizen living in a rural part of Vermont, it’s not so easy to get around. The state taxes the Social Security, and all that shoveling the snow and mowing your property are tough. And where we lived, the nearest doctors and the hospital are 45 minutes away.

I was doing some research on Vermont. Decent average wages, very small but not terribly sparse population, liberal-ish politics without being up their own ass about it like California, that beautiful New England flora that I miss so very much, a push for additive manufacturing jobs by the state government, and proportionally the fewest douchey muscle cars sold out of any state. But when I saw the bit about road signs and billboards being prohibited, well… it now it looks like Paradise to me. The only thing that could make it better would be European style town and city planning, with ample walkways and bike paths, and traffic calming measures built right into the fabric of developed spaces. But if I want that, maybe I’ll need to move to Europe.

Five reasons VT is not for you: 1) The people LOVE tourist but they do NOT like "flatlanders," that move there. They have been known to do some pretty weird things to flatlanders, like "Icepack" their front door in during the middle of winter so they cant get out or in! 2) Winter: sometimes reaches -20 at night for a month at a time. 3) Food delivery, unless you're in a major place like Burlington, you MUST get off the couch. 4) One-way thinking. They do not do change. It's like living in the 1800's. ANd finally 5) Speaking of the 1800's, if you dont live in a major city, you will not get Internet, cell phone service, and television will cost you 100. for basic stations each night. Why? Because there is no competition.
@esc0bert

@@noreason1495 Eh not all true. I live in a very rural town and have fiber internet and my cell phone comes in most places. You can get an antenna for basic stations and many towns have cable TV. @@enolwlfe You can carry without a CCW in both states. Governor Scott decided one night a few years back that there should be magazine capacity limits and a bunch of other “gun control” that skirts the otherwise great Vermont carry laws or lack there of. The cool thing, in my opinion, is that you can get an ACTUAL permit that’s reciprocal in a bunch of other states from NH. Some people use it to get the Florida and Utah non res permit which will allow you to carry legally in quite a few states. I find that the sweet spot would be to either rent or own a house with a low property tax burden in NH. I own 10 acres in the NEK in which I can live of grid but I would love to also have something in NH to take advantage of what I mentioned above. That’s just me! Does that sound like a plan to you or am I missing something? Respectfully! Take care! ✊🏿

You complain about property taxes? Go to Colorado. The last assessment are in. Many folks just got hit with 40 to 50 percent increases over last year. A typical home on 1 ac with 2500 sq ft averages 1 million. Winters are a roller coaster. Warm December days followed by temps as low as minus 30. Water is a bitch. If you don’t have a good well, you can pay upwards of 250 or more per month for water. If you find cheap land, your off grid and you have a water tank in your truck as you have to haul water. If you creekside, you get flash flooded basements every summer. If your land is vacant, you pay four times as much in taxes. Compare that with Vermont’s current use tax programs. The roads are a zoo! Stand still traffic on overloaded four lanes freeways in Denver. In ski season , lift tickets cost both of your balls and your first born. Getting back from vail to Denver takes a 1.5 hour drive over to an 8 hour drive. And I haven’t talked about northern VA, CA or New Jersey. You can’t build a garden bench without county permits and the inspectors are up your ass 24-7.

@@pepijykyum Vermont does not require permits to purchase and has no firearms registration. Both open carry and concealed carry are legal without a permit in Vermont. Any person 16 or older (although federal law requires the age to be 18) who can legally possess a firearm is allowed to carry openly or concealed. Taken from google . Vermont state law says that a person cannot have or buy a gun if s/he has been convicted of a violent felony. Additionally, a person who is on probation cannot have or buy a gun if his/her terms of probation forbid it. Also taken from Google

@@leem3793 I live in the Albany, NY area and have been visiting Vermont since the early 90's. I know all about the situations you described and am fine with them. With Starlink, The T-Mobile/Space-X partnership and online shopping, those problems you are experiencing will soon be gone. I grew up in the sticks in Central NY and know the importance of a well stocked pantry and freezer. I think I'm at a different stage of life than you so our perspectives are different. Depends. Are you single, married, do you own a business? How much do you make a year? There isn't really a blanket answer, but I can tell you that if you're making less than 60K per year taxes are actually very fair. The tax burden really only impacts high income earners.

I was born/grew-up there until I was 30. Smartest thing I did was to move out. Yes, watch out for them out-of-staters they are there to take any high paying job away for the Vermonter. Do they still have that saying?: Don't hire the Vermonter they don't know anything? In Virginia I had this contract with the VA (White River) working for over 3 years but when the one from the VA (Whtie River) got wind that I was Born/grew-up in Burlington she saw to it that I lost my job under that contract.
