Dictionary's meaning of "VINTAGE": Used to describe something that is not new but that is valued because of its good condition, attractive design, etc. When I got a big box with all these helicopter parts, I was overwhelmed and thankful to Tom McGuinn for sending it to me. Being winter, I decided to start the project of restoring the Trex 500 to actually be flown in the summer, with nicer weather. But you never know what will happen when your 70, so I decided to fly it today to the song, "This old man"! Thanks for watching and please stay well.

Dave your videos really bring back the memories. Ive been flying rc aircraft fore 40 yrs. i remember a club member that flew a 60 size nitro heli back in the early 80s he used the Kraft single stick radio. I thought that was the coolest thing. But man were the heli kits expensive back then. I think the heli he was flying he built from kit, and it was a Xcell 60. I really enjoy your channel, keep bringing back the memories.

Thanks very kindly for your comments. I used to work at Kraft and Single stick Tx's were what Phil always flew. Your right, helis were expensive too! Your picture looks like your a biker, so make sure to stick around for my upcoming video on Motorvation sidecars, manufactured right here in town. Thanks again.

Hello Dave I could not help that last comment about being 70 and not making it through the winter I hope you mean because of the cold and not health issues. I wish you many more happy years Dave! So keep them videos coming buddy I am always waiting for my notification on youtube for the next one. On a colder note you got all the snow this year I live in Winnipeg Manitoba, peope call it winterpeg because of how much snow and how cold it gets. But compaired to you we got off light this year, so keep your bones warm and your hands busy spring will be here soon enough.

Haha. Well, I could hardly move my fingers in the flight, so I guess that is what I mean, cause the cold weather is my enemy! LOL. We got snow again last night, and more is predicted for next week. Glad it missed you, but...Hey...you never know. Knock on wood! Happy flying and be well.

Haha, the "vintage" part got me too. I have a couple Trex 500E's and never thought of them as vintage, seeing how parts are still available and the heli is still relevant(at least to me). But i guess they are getting old, so fair enough. Dave, I'm glad you got one, they are pretty good helis. and great flying on your part too.

I also have a nexus 30 that I need to fly someday. I got it new in 2000 just out of college as my first heli, but I never got it up in the air for more than a few feet and got scared, slammed it to the ground, broke parts. I bought all the new parts, put it back together and it's been sitting on my shelf ever since. I do fly my smaller 450 helis, well I'm trying to get back into them again. But i would like to fly my nexus some day.

Wow I just want to say your an incredible pilot. Wow I can’t believe that guy mailed you that cache of rc helicopter supplies. When you put it together and went out to fly her that was one hell of a soft start. What kind of ESC are you running? I saw the Scorpion motor which was insane. But it’s a beautiful bird. I have the same exact 500 Helicopter but the Hobby king version. Even the same Canopy.😎

Thanks for the kind words. I appreciate that. Yep everything he sent was broke though, and all in parts. There was no Canopy, so I ordered this one, but forget from where....may have been HobbyKing. Not sure of the speed control. Cant see it well enough to tell, but it does have a nice soft start. Thanks again and Happy flying.

Seems like every Heli pilot eventually gets a TRex. Good to see you brave the cold to bring us a flight. A friend gave me a TRex 450 of about the same vintage as your 500 and I'm looking forward to getting it going. I even spent months trying to get the original light blue gears that Align used for a while. I won't actually fly with those gears because I can't really fly and I know I'll be replacing things a lot. Against the advice of "modern" flyers with copters that fly themselves, I'm using a Blade CP Pro which has slowly morphed into a Honey Bee CP. I see you did videos on your Honey Bee so you know the copter. The fun thing about the Honey Bee is that unlike the EFlite Blade, I can buy parts for pennies on the dollar. Man did I have fun getting that in the air, and I have enough spares that crashing is only a minor inconvienence. I even made of video of the "restoration" process as the copter was given to me in poor shape and then spent a decade in my attic. Here it is if you want to take a look: kzitem.info/news/bejne/z32LtnWvcniBoqA

This box also had a bunch of Trex 450 parts, so I was going to try to put that together it too. There might be an extra set of blue gears, I am not sure, so if you need one, PM me and I'll send it to you. Nice job on the video too! Happy flying and thanks for the comments.

You are a bold person! Flying 30mph winds too. Clearly it was a good helicopter as you have to problems commanding it. I know what you mean by price. Its a shame to see rust on those parts and that you were able to clean it up. A wet basement or open garage is not a good place to store things. My cousin tryed giving me a balsa air frame stored in a barn. It was in terrible shape! I told her to just burn it. Sad that it was not properly stored, beyond repair.

I know this is a few months old now but I just traded a vintage extra 300E fot an align trex 450. Any chance you have some 450 parts in that stuff you got, want to sell some? As I only have experience on a cheap WL. Toys 913,I am waiting to fly my Trex 450 . I am thinking of going fly barless on it. I noticed you can no longer get the gyro in 3 axis any more in flybar type. You are truely a master at flying. I am looking forward to seeing you fly that bird again now that the weather is finally nicer.
