My problem is the same my shallow well is 1/4 mile down the hill from my new 800 sq ft Red Barn that looks like the Dutch gambrel roof style barn. It’s so cool and I love the on grid electric power hook up it only cost me $8179 US DOLLARS TO INSTALL UNDERGROUND POWER FEEDERS FROM MY NEIGHBORS POLEBARN A MILE NORTH. The Red Barn is built to be a 16x 20 loft and a 12x 20 garage and a 12x20 eat in kitchen and living area. The water well is far down the hill and the eco toilet needs to be dumped once a week. But the place is beam construction and the structure is solid! My off grid cabin is downhill from my Red Barn and it is pure red Michigan pine a very hard wood for pine trees. My place is great and I love vacations camping up north by winters are in the city south Michigan where the winters are milder and the Krogers is walking distances from my house 🏡

My oh my. It’s been in the high teens/low twenties over here on the other coast. Winter is running late here and after this video, I’m not looking forward to it. It is scenarios like these that test your mettle with the issue, while also as a couple. You persevered and are now stronger for it. This is a great video for anyone considering going off-grid. It isn’t always as glamorous as many channels make it out to be. Well done!

Just to mention, I was shocked to see how freezing cold many areas of BC are already. 😮 I’m still wearing shorts, t-shirts and flip flops in the daytime. Plus taking cold showers outside with the garden hose. It is getting cooler here though, dropping down to +15~low 20s at night! Jan/Feb. gets colder. I do miss Canada though. Sorry to hear your tank is leaking. So annoying to deal with in the snow. You’ll get it done. Lucky you have a dried-in house with a wood stove to warm up in later! Be thankful for that.

Suggestion - purchase a garden sprayer. Fill with hot water, cooled down to comfortable, use as a shower. Then in the spring, you have a sprayer for a lovely flower garden. Also, I was crying and yelling when you didn't put a gasket on BOTH the inside and the outside on that fitting

You can see the frustration, glad you made it through it ,and hope that you back filled by hand around your outlet at the bulkhead. A common mistake ,is to just use machinery once all the plumbing is done, and I'm guilty of making the mistake myself ,just trying to get through the project . You have to make sure that the line has firm support underneath it at the tank ,otherwise the weight from the backfill will distort your gasket and cause leaks .

I understand your situation! That poly cistern is the weak link in your water system and care must be taken when burying it and the plumbing. The plumbing must be fully supported to avoid undue stresses at the tank connections when buried. In the day's before plastics, concrete or wooden cisterns were built onsite and lasted many years. Good luck with your adventure! Looking back from a future date when all this hard work and stress are long gone, you will appreciate the fruit's of your labor's with what you have built and remember it fondly!

If I may suggest, if you make the patch for your storage tank from the inside it would be forced against the crack ensuring that it won't leak. When patched from the outside the pressure would force the patch off by the water pressure. Make your patches on the inside 💠!

Hi Greg and Katie glad you could repair the cistern but not after dealing with the leaks and getting the water to fill it. if you are going to keep your totes maybe look at getting fittings and suction hose to hook into the valve at the bottom . Your totes would be great in the summer to a use to make a fire skid. You have the pump and some hose. You may want to look at Rainbird sprinklers to install around your property .high up off the ground .on t he ends of your home and on the sheds. These systems have been used to save homes around BC. i know its early to think about the systems. I hope you water troubles are over. be save

So I took 4 5 gallon buckets placed two in the tub with me two beside it heated two canner size pots of water and poured half of each in the buckets topped off with room temp water from 5 gallon cans I had. I stood in the tub used a very large cup poured water over me soaped up they took large cup again and rinsed off good. Anyway just a tip I figured out.
