Fantastic question!!!!! It may, depending on how bad the bearing is. Once we get zeroed in on what noise we are looking for and where it is, we will "drive it" on a lift to hear the noise "under load". Clearly, (This is coming from a point I do not want you to get smashed or tear up anything) if you are doing this on jack stands to make sure it is a 2 wheel drive vehicle (if only jacking up one end) check and block the non moving wheels and make gear and throttle changes slowly and smoothly so as not to jar it off the jack stands and make your current problem a 1000 times worse. The last part of this is when we do this in a shop up on a lift we also use listening tools to locate the area within a few inches that is making the noise ,so once it is all taken apart we know where to really look hard. ************ On jack stands things like your body , hair, clothes will be much closer to rotating parts like driveshafts and wheels while trying to pin point the noise. Over nearly 40 years of wrenching I have seen the negative aftermath of things gone very wrong. Good luck and safety first!!! *******************

Hi TJ, Glad we could be of service. Check the motor and trans mounts and u joints as that can be a source of a shutter and can cause driveline alignemnt problems. But also in working backwards if the rear end bearings are bad enough that to can cause a driveline alignment issue and make a vibration, shutter and noise. Fix what you know is broken first and see how that works. It is kind of the "chick and the egg" thing as to what started it all first. Thanks for sharing.

Hi James, Verify it is coming from the rear, then It could be from the limited slip part or an axle bearing (on an axel bearing it is usually only noisy on one side but still needs to be ruled out) I have also seen the unit free up after the modifier was added and the car drove in tight left and right turns for 10 to 20 cycles. If the noise will not go away and it is verified as coming from the rear axle ,than it would be time to pull it apart and start looking at all the bearings and the limited slip unit (assuming it has a limited slip as not all vehicles have one) Really great question and thanks for posting.

@Craigs_car_care

Hi Tony, Great question. When you press in the clutch pedal and hear a growling noise when the vehicle is stopped it is most likely the through out bearing on the end of the clutch fork. (the repair here is the bearing and usually the clutch while it is all apart) If this is only happening when the vehicle is moving then it can be anything from the bearings in the transmission to the rear axle. It would time to start searching for where the sound is coming from first. Having a local shop put the vehicle up on a lift and "drive the car" while walking under it to zero in on the source of the noise and also check the fluids for the transmission and rear axle for the level and their condition and metal content. Let us know what you discovered and thanks for posting.

Generally starts with one failed bearing it rapidly spreads metal through the whole axle ruining others. You would think it's always going to be from the rear axle being low on fluid but most of the time we find them close to or completely full. Even if you catch it early by the time you take the holder axle apart it's just as well to replace all the bearings and seals since the labor is about the same unless you're talking about just an axle bearing that does not require disassembly of the whole axle. If there's any one single contributing outside factor we say it would be from overloading capacity of the vehicle in trucks it can often be towing over the limit or caring too much weight in the bed on a mustang or performance vehicles it's possible that repeated performance acceleration could cause a premature wear but I think normally is just from worn out bearings that have run there course of life. Great question and maybe it's easiest to say it which came first the chicken or the egg.

Will I need to rebuild the diff again or replace it.?
@Craigs_car_care
Жыл бұрын
If he was able to just swap out axle bearings and seals that was a good move to replace the bad bearing but if you're still hearing some noise they're still another four bearings inside the rear end. Chances are if the gears are okay it it only needs to have the other bearings replaced with new seals while apart and if there's been any metal floating around there it may be a good idea to do the axle bearing or bearings if they did both in seals again with new fluid. Whatever metal on the first failed bearing was or had been floating around in there had already probably started wearing the other bearings just a bit. It won't get better it'll only get worse so the sooner you can take care of it the better. A little bit of an investment but way less than a new car and about half the cost of a remmanufactured rear axle.

I have a 2005 Ford Mustang that I put in storage over the winter at 107,000 miles. The mice got in the engine compartment and chewed up a bunch of wires when I went to start the car the next spring. I replaced all the wires, before I started the engine. When I took it out it had a loud roaring noise when I am driving at any speed, whether it be 25 in town or out on the highway at full speed. I replaced all 4 brake pads, all 4 wheel bearings, both motormounts, the transmission mount and all 4 shock absorbers. I topped off the rear diff fluid to. I also pressurized the rear of the exhaust pipe with a shop vac and sprayed windex on all the joints and exhaust manifolds and found no leaks. None of that fixed the roaring noise in the cab. The car is quiet when it is idling and I walk around it. It is so bad that I need to wear earplugs when driving this car. The car is now at 164,000 miles.

Good Morning, I would say your down to Tires, Rear axle or transmission. Or one of the parts replaced was bad. If the noise is the same at any speed then I would start focusing in on transmission or the rear axle bearing. Tires generally change their pitch as speed goes up or down or turning left or right. Check to see if the sound changes when you are pressing the gas pedal or letting off at any speed. This could help narrow it down to the rear end. If you have a shop near by as them to "drive it on the lift" and tell them what you are looking for. A testing and rack fee may save you a lot of time and money finding the cause of the noise. Thanks for sharing and good luck with the fix.

Great question and there are a few details that will help you narrow down the possibilities. First, is this an automatic or manual transmission? Second, at what speeds is this occurring? Third, does the noise change in tone,pitch or tempo based on speed and RPM ,one or the other or both speed and RPM. How long has this been happening? So what could it be? Synchronizers in the 3/4 gear or bearings in the transmission. Tires, wheel bearings or something in the rear end that is more speed dependent and it just so happens to be heard in 3&4 gear just to name and cover a few things.

Hi Samantha, I would need more information to be able to provide information that would be useful. When you say the "differential" was changed are you referring to the fluid or the whole physical mechanical unit? Were all 6 bearings in the rear differential replaced with a new crush washer used? Has the noise been confirmed as coming from the rear and not the front wheels? Was the transmission also ruled out? (any of these can cause a noise that changes with speed) Without being there to test drive and raise it up on al lift and hear the noise and pin point it in person it will be very hard to correctly and accurately find it in the manor of using this platform. It could also be that the new parts used had a problem or need to be readjusted. I love to help but I will be limited to what I can do until more information can be provided to help rule out other possibilities.

Hi Dan, If it is a noise heard only while driving and it sounds like it is from the rear than there are only a handful of possibilities. 1. Tires ,but they do not grind but you could have then rotated to the front and see if the noise moves, 2. Driveshaft u joints can make some weird noises and are easy enough to check by pull the driveshaft out and feeling the bearings in the u joints. 3. Brakes dragging can grind even when your off the brake pedal and again are easy enough to rules out by having them inspected. 4. rear end bearings, axles bearing (2) one left and one right, carrier bearings (2) one left and one right, pinion bearings one inner and ne outer, Pinion gear or ring gear (one each) spider or side gears or a limited slip clutch issue and of course the gear lube. If you just have an axle bearing going bad you may be able to get away with replacing just one bearing and the seal. but keep in mind and bearings in the rear axle that are, and have been grinding are sending metal all through the other 5 bearings that are all in the same rear axle housing that are lubricated by the same axle grease. My point is if this turns out to be in the rear axle and is all original from 1990 with ??? miles then the best long term fix would be to have it disassembled , cleaned very well, inspected and the worn parts replaced including all 3 seals, rear cover gasket, all 6 bearings (2 axle/ 2 carrier and the inner and outer pinion bearings) see if the spider gears, side gears and the ring and pinion are reusable or replace the ones that are worn/broken and put it all back together and fill with new fluid. Its not cheap but the best long term fix and you wont have to worry about it again for a while.

I wish I was thinking carrier bearing before I even read the rest of your post right off the bat as a first place to start. Make sure that you check the pinion that where the drive shaft goes into the rear end that it is correctly and has the correct rolling resistance torque as well. It could be that this setting has backed off a bit and just needs to be tightened a tiny bit or could be an indication of one or both pee and bearings starting to fail. Start with all the easy stuff first like fluid level and the proper tightening of the pinion nut see how it feels and sounds with a stethoscope to detect any grinding bearing sounds and go from there. May also be a good idea to go ahead and pull the cover and inspect the magnet for male debris and the condition of the fluid if it's not been opened in a while.

Good Morning Robert, There are several things that can cause a clunking such as you are describing. But as you have found any worn or damaged components will only get worse and can also cause other components to have a shortened life as well. What your describing is called the "coast side" of the ring and pinion contact. Sometimes it can be as simple as just having the pinion nut re toquted if it's backed off and gotten a little bit loose. Or it has the pinion bearings beginning to fail. Either way the sooner you get it resolved the less downtime and at least amount of money it'll cost you.

@Craigs_car_care

Hello Brian, if the noise can be heard while the car is sitting still at a red light than the answer is no. Because the parts in the rear differential are not moving when the car is sitting still. Depending what year your mustang is you may be hearing the electric fuel pump if it is mounted on the frame rail or in the fuel tank towards the rear. It could also be a part of the exhaust system touching the body and or an internal problem with a muffler, resonator or even the catalytic convertor. While the car is sitting still and making the noise have someone listen on the outside of the car to help locate and isolate where the noise is coming from. Make sure to set the parking brake and chock the wheels for safety and have someone also hold the brake pedal.

The longer the warranty the more the price goes up. Depending what part of the country will also affect the price. If the ring &pinion or side gears are damaged that adds to the cost and if it has limited slip that can also add to the price. Hope this helps some, thanks for posting.

Jose it's going to depend if the wine is when you're accelerating or coasting or if it's the same at all times over 70 mph. If it's only when you're accelerating then it may be a bearing in the rear axle. But if it's a constant noise whether you are accelerating or not over 70 it may be a tire or a wheel bearing on the rear if you hear it coming from the rear. It will need to be inspected and tested possibly run on a lift in the air or a technician can pinpoint where the noise is coming from and zero in on it from there. I am a new owner of a 2011 challenger SRT8 with the 392 and manual six. I have heard a couple things. Sometimes it seems there is slack in the drivetrain and I hear a small thud when starting out in first gear. I have had it for a week and have learned to drive in a way that avoids the slack or play and the thud noise. Also I hear a whirring noise from the rear of the car from 55 to 75 mph that seems to go away at 80mph. The noise is only when under load. If I let off the gas the whirring stops right away. As soon as I give it a slight amount of gas the whirring noise begins again. The Dodge dealership I bought it from performed an inspection which I was given before I purchased the car and it reported no unusual noises from the drivetrain. I can’t take it back easily as I paid to have it shipped from Wisconsin to Washington (the state). What do you think it most likely is? I have made an appointment for this week to have a local Dodge mechanic to diagnose it. I am thinking that I should have them change the differential fluid even if he tells me the noise is nothing to be concerned about. It is hard for me to believe there is something majorly wrong with only 14000 miles and the dealership saying there are no unusual noises. Although it is not super loud you can’t miss hearing it with the radio off and the windows up. I would love to have the opinion of Craig’s Car Care as to what you think is most likely causing these noises.

Good afternoon Sergio, as long as the ring and pinion has not been damaged it's pretty much just a simple bearing and seal swap with a whole lot of cleaning to get the metal particles out. Make sure the parts you buy are of a very good quality because you don't want to have to do this job twice in the next hundred thousand miles. You'll also need the correct fluid and some sealer for the rear cover. If you don't have a way to press the bearings and races on and off you may be able to hire a local shop to do that part for you where you carrying the parts or maybe a machine shop. Get some good instructions so all the settings are right as the details really matter in this case.

I tried to look this one up but it was from almost a year ago. But when we do these we replace all the bearings for the 3 year/36,000 mile parts and labor warranty plus it just makes sense due to metal partials that have already been able to float around in the grease and get run through all the other bearings plus as one has started to fail the others are probbly not far behind and have the same mileage on them. It also saves some labor while it is partially apart (still have to press bearings off the pinion, axles and their races and seals. With that said these jobs can range from $1500.00 to over $2500.00 depending on tone rings, lock up clutches parts that are found to be worn after they are disassembled, etc. Wish I had a more direct answer. You can call the dealer parts department and give them your VIN number and they can get it pretty close depending on what parts you find worn or do all the parts we mentioned while it is all apart.
