Ahhhh the 90's - early 00's, when concussion protocol was non existence and what little protocol there was it was basically the player's decision or choice, no testing as there is today, "yep give me 10 minutes doc, I'm good just got my bell rung" meanwhile the Dr be like, "I'm over here Paul, you're talking to my desk lamp" 😂😂, incidentally how many cups does Steven's have and how many does Kariya have 😉😉 God I miss that era of hockey, big hits, big fights, many different styles and players with different roles, goalies were very stylish lol, weren't all cookie cutter identical 6'4" butterfly guys like today, acrobatic butterfly at it's beginning, the exciting reaction styles goalies was so fun to watch. Greatest era of NHL in my opinion
@JarradBruessel32
Жыл бұрын
Except it was also extremely dangerous and many careers were ruined because of it. Also goalies still have their own style somewhat. It's just that the style used today is the most effective at making saves and works the best. There are some goalies who are smaller and are much faster. Saros is only 5'11" and nedeljkovic is 6'0".
@markh38
Жыл бұрын
@@JarradBruessel32 yep the speed today is a bit more dangerous than the 90's, and back then guys would atone for big hits like this so ya didn't see them a whole lot cause the Domi's and Clark's and Probert's and Macsorleys would come gunning for ya next shift, the ducks back then weren't built too tuff and when Steven's was on the ice most players kept their heads up, today if ya hit someone going 20mph+ you can hurt them pretty good and at most maybe get a penalty. The players are all brought up to be ridiculously fast these days and protective gear is like armor now a days. The goaltenders today have been analytically engineered to play the way they do today, for best stopping % etc etc, and that includes the drafting of goalies which typically means nobody under 6'2" is very high on the draft board unless they're exceptional, Johnathan Bernies biggest "flaw" during his draft I remember was that he was only 6 foot at the time, and everyone wants the big blocking goaltenders today, back in those days the GM's thought opposite about bigger goaltenders, they kinda perfered the smaller quicker guys, most of them were between 5'8" and 5'11", wasn't until what they (everyone) seen what Roy could do and how the butterfly big blocking goaltenders could do they started going after the bigger guys to the point were the NHL actually started cracking down on goalie equipment sizes cause the goals were going down, but just my opinion, I grew up with the 90's hockey so I enjoy that particular era 👍
@dvo1245
Жыл бұрын
I think this current era could be the greatest of all-time if players would nut up & start hitting... It's so infuriating watch these guys come down the ice dangling & dancing knowing that 99% of the opposition is gonna play the puck & the stick & not body up... Even players who stand in front of the net to screen the goalie get a free pass, like wtf!!! Back in the day, if u tried to screen the goalie, u had to fight to get that kind of advantage, now defensemen just let u set up shop, so goddamn hard to watch how soft the league has gotten... I love the high skill level the league is at, but it's not as impressive to watch these high skilled guys when they're playing against guys who won't touch them up...

Big difference from the modern game. Guys played through concussions, broken bones, you name it. It was a stigma. Hockey players were too tough to let an injury keep them out of the game. There are tons of examples of playing while injured and having an impact on the game. Just pure determination. It might not have been the wisest thing, but damn, it made those guys heroes in my eyes.
