They got together when Cher was still a teenager. Sonny was several years older than she was. He was producing records and she was very introverted and afraid of performing. Sonny was her strength when they started & he gave her the courage to start singing in front of audience.

AT that time, Sonny was campaigning to become mayor of Palm Springs. Cher was promoting her album,Cher".. Moonstruck had not yet come out yet. A producer from Late Night with David Letterman" had called Sonny to ask to be a guest on the show....with Cher. Sonny jumped at the idea. For a brief moment, they would be Sonny & Cher again. Then Cher had called ,all business. He helped her calm her nerves , it was anxiety about going on, but she once called David Letterman an expletive. She was afraid he and David would gang up on her. Weeks later, the producer called again to ask if he would sing with Cher.He wasn't certain if she'd want to sing with him. THE show had puled a fast one on Cher and yet she still did it. .She seen the audience tearing up and Sonny and became the strong one out of the duo. In the late 60's a lot of parents were worried about the hippie culture influence on their kids. They saw the clothes, the hair, the protest movements, the drugs. It is impossible to explain just how conformist the pre-hippie era was in America. Then along came The Sonny & Cher show and every week they were cute, lovable and so happy. Their love for each other came right through the TV set into the American home.. The way they would banter and tease each other resonated with many couples of all ages. Everyone knew that Sonny had a great song writing ability, but Cher was the one with the winning voice. Once Cher started receiving most of the attention for her own music and her voice, it started a rift between the two. An eventual breakup was inevitable. Cherilyn Sarkisian first met Salvatore Bono in a Los Angeles coffee shop in November 1962,[6] when she was sixteen.[7] Eleven years her senior,[8] Bono was working for record producer Phil Spector at Gold Star Studios in Hollywood.[9] The two became best friends, eventual lovers, and were supposedly married in 1964, but Bono says in his autobiography that it was not an official marriage. They were legally wed after their only child, Chaz, was born. Through Bono, Cher started as a session singer, and sang backup on several of Spector's classic recordings, including "Be My Baby" by the Ronettes, "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" by The Righteous Brothers and Darlene Love's "A Fine, Fine Boy". In Darlene Love's recording, the listener can clearly hear Cher and Sonny close to the mic (along with Love, who recorded her own backing vocals).[9]

When Cher cut loose on higher notes, with that beautiful vibrato and rounded tone, I just melt. I don't think she took any voice lessons, it was just a natural talent. At this point, there was no idea of having their own variety show, most TV was in black and white, and it was a different universe. those of us who experienced the moment see it from a different perspective, we lived it, slowly, gradually, where today you are getting mere soundbites/video clips of what life was like back then. There were NO official "hippies" yet, not for about 2 years. It evolved, you cannot judge it from how you see them dressed here in 1965. Most entertainers and bands were still wearing suits, a few were breaking through with their own dress code. Exceptions were the Byrds and the Mamas and Papas- and Sonny and Cher, all from California at that time.

The story I read was that Cher was super shy and self conscious and reluctant to sing in front of strangers. Sonny said look why don't I sing with you? You'll see it'll be ok. That is how they came to start recording as a duo.

Part of growing up American in the 60's & 70's was watching the Sonny & Cher Show. They had many talented guests including Tom Jones! Cher's costumes were always talked about, we waited to see what she would wear next!

Look. I am not going to lie. Cher is a goddess and Sonny looks like he is the understudy for a character in Shakespeare here. I know he was extremely talented and had charisma out the wahzoo, but man. She must have loved that man.

Sonny woke Cher up in the middle of the night to show her THIS song he had just written, because he had a gut feeling it would be a hit. Oh, yeah, it was a hit and then some. Still going strong after 50+ years on the radio.

Her eulogy when he was killed in a skiing accident (long after they divorced) tells you all you need to know about their relationship. She admired him and loved him, even though they couldn’t handle being married to each other.

And yes, this was a BIG #1 song in 1965, and America fell in love with these two, and stayed in love for about 10 years. And despite their eventual split, Cher always gave credit and gratitude to Sonny for starting her on her path. Sonny was obviously older and a well established song writer before he decided to form them as a duo.

Sonny was the writer and producer of this song. He wrote and produced a lot of great songs for them. To me, his "I got flowers in the spring" was the most memorable line of the song.

This is going to segue into a reaction suggestion. Sonny and Cher’s tv show was great…they modeled their banter after what Louis Prima and his wife Keely Smith did in their live performances. Louis was called the “King of Swing”, and Keely’s singing voice was incredible. Louis started out in the 1930’s, and in early 1950’s you can hear how his music morphed into rock and roll. He also voiced King Louis in Disney’s “The Jungle Book”, and his band did the music for King Louis in that. Please react to Louis Prima “Jump Jive and Wail”. Then there is a cover of that song by the Brian Setzer Orchestra that was done in the 1990’s that’s also worth checking out.

I did not know that they based their banter on Louis & Keely. I adore Louis Prima & even visited his grave to sing "I Wanna Be Like You" from "The Jungle Book". Thanks for sharing this story!

Sonny Bono wrote most of the songs they performed together, as well as several of the songs Cher did on her own early on. Sonny was absolutely in love with Cher--you could see it any time they appeared together--right up to the day he died. Part of me wants to recommend another great Sonny and Cher song this time, but instead I think I'll recommend my favorite song Cher recorded since she and Sonny broke up. It's a duet with Peter Cetera called "After All." I really think you'll both like that one.

Sonny Bono was Cher's first husband (1964 to 1975). Together they had daughter Chastity who is now Chaz Bono. The boy playing guitar in the "If I Could Turn Back Time" video is Elijah Blue Allman, Cher's son with Gregg Allman who she married in 1975 and separated in 1979.

Another of their big hits from this same era was "The Beat Goes On." It's a must listen! Sonny wasn't known for his vocal quality and range, that's for sure. But I think he was the driver behind their success. And his personality was so charming and funny, that more than made up for his limited singing abilities. They had great chemistry. So much so, that they even had a TV show together AFTER they got divorced, and I believe they remained close friends until his death.

Sonny was Cher's first husband as well as singing and TV show partner and co-host. Sonny worked for Phil Spector starting out doing odd jobs and eventually becoming a producer. Sonny was supposed to produce Cher's first recordings but when she got into the studio she became very shy. Sonny went in and sang with her to get her over her shyness but after that Cher refused to sing without Sonny. They became singing partners, Sonny became their manager, and they were married soon after that. Sonny managed the duo and also Cher's early solo career. They were still together when she made songs like "Gypsies, Tramps, and Thieves." They eventually split and went their separate ways. Cher became an icon and Sonny became a U.S. Congressman.

This was early in their career, Try to find some later from 'The Sonny and Cher' television show. All of Cher's clothes were made by the famous designer Bob Mackie, who also designed for Carol Burnette Show. Their show was an hour long variety show with comedic story episodes, guest entertainers, and of course, their own duets. It was a fabulous show.

Cher was married to Sonny before Duane Allman. Sonny started as a songwriter (he wrote songs for a lot of famous singers, including Sam Cooke, who you should check out as well) & music producer. He & Cher had the "Sonny & Cher Show" that ran through most of the 70's. Sonny went on to act in several TV shows movies & then to have an impressive political career starting in the late 80's when he was elected the mayor of Palm Springs, CA & then was elected to Congress. He was killed in a skiing accident in 1998. You should also check out their song "The Beat Goes On".
