The situation at Merapi is quite similar to the situation in early December at Semeru. We know that a large pelean eruption is going to occur at some point in the future but cannot determine if it will occur today, tomorrow, next week, or sometime later this year. Regardless, people within 10 kilometers downslope (and potentially up to 15 kilometers downslope) should be evacuated due to the risk of a large magnitude eruption.

@E Van I hope you get to. It's a little place but the terrain is fairly rugged so you get great value for the size and there are no huge crowds. The view is stellar and then some. You're higher than everything else on the island except for the picturesque stratovolcanoes of Mount Ngauruhoe next door (with Mount Tongariro behind it) and Mount Taranaki about 80 miles away.

How are magma and earthquake depth determined? I'd like to hear about this in detail.
@TctyaDDKhang
2 жыл бұрын
I have no training in geology, but my guess is that the depth of earthquake centers could be determined by triangulation with multiple seismometers, factoring in known transmission velocity of mechanical waves through rock. Magma is liquid, so its transmission velocity of mechanical waves is different than in solid rock, creating delays, distortions or reflections of waves as they go through. So listening to the waves then triangulating with seismometers as earthquakes happen should give the depth of magma pool.

I’ll have to read up a bit more on them, but they are a group of 94-105 million year old kimberlites. I can't recall that you did a film on Tio Popo (Popocatepetl) According to recorded history, he explodes every 2,000 years. Lat blow was about 2,000 years ago and signature sulfur was found in Michigan. Right now, he's stretching and yawning, as folks from Cholula say. Side note of unneeded trivia: Centuries ago, before colonists introduced distilleries, well-to-do elder women would have their jugs of wine and so on taken to close to the summit to freeze. Brandy, tequila, and mescal would be drained from the ice, and some left as a thankyou to Tio. You had to be of age to be a grandparent to drink anything stronger than beer.
