A point to note that I've discovered after more testing is that when it's in UPS mode it does seem to run its fans on and off which seems unneccessary. I have emailed them for more information. Edit. Confirmed as expected behaviour. Something to do with the fact that it is running the AC and occasionally topping up the battery means the fans come on and off periodically. Worth noting if you want this in an office as a UPS, you will definitely hear the fans.

What is UPS?
@Nevir202
5 ай бұрын
@@leecegal Uninterruptable Power Supply. Basically a system where the battery is more or less inline with whatever is plugged into it, so that if the power goes out, the device connected to it won't even notice. Most commonly used for computers, since even a fraction of a second power outage is bad times when you're using one for something important. But if you have a big one, and occasional long power outages, having one on your fridge or other critical appliances can be nice, since you don't need to do anything for the power to kick in. You don't want to come home from a weekend out of town to a fridge full of spoiled food.

Just have to note that this is EPS not UPS. UPS have to provide power in a shorter time frame, shorter than 15ms, and intended for short power outages. To help prevent data disruptions. EPS allows for a longer power gap, up to 30ms, and is intended for longer outages. To help prevent human critical systems from going down. Like cold food storage or a medical device.
@BenVallack

I think for computers though this is fast enough to be considered a UPS with the benefit of longer run time right? EPS normally are associated with needing backup generators etc so there's an expectation of it not being fast enough for a computer, which this is.

You can get a full PEV(personal electric vehicle)(for example an EUC) with as much W-h as that battery... for the same price as that battery(assuming 999 pounds for 1300 W-h is correct). You would still get extremely high change and discharge lithium ion cells for extremely fast charging just like that battery. This feels insanely highly priced considering instead of it being a battery that is self-moving, compact, load carrying, and vehicle that can also carry you. Instead of that it has output ports and an AC converter and works as a UPS. ... I wonder how hard it would be to just add output ports and an AC converter to an EUC or other PEV. Interesting DIY question.
@BenVallack

I actually looked into making my own before going down this route. In a box, not converting a EUC. I have a reasonable experience with 12v and inverters as I used to live on a boat. I can assure you there is no way you'd do it DIY for less than this. The price is £599 with the coupons and my extra code. To do it yourself you'd need a 120A 12v LFP battery, a 1200w inverter, a solar MPPT controller, then all the various DC-DC controllers for the USB ports etc. Not to mention the charger that can charge this from AC at 1000w! Honestly £599 for this in a product that is this small and well build is insanely good value.

@@BenVallackThats almost half of the 999 I though it was. That changes alot. I do worry a bit about large efficency losses by charing using high amps and high rates. Also efficency loss means heat and heat is scary but LiPO tend to be very good against heat so hopefully its safe.
@BenVallack

Yeah for sure. Yeah from what I've read about LFP I think we're good - it has fans in as well and it adjusts the charge speed as the SOC changes too so I'm confident it's doing everything it needs to. They claim industry leading longevity on their website too. @@Dogo.R

Hey Ben, I don't know if you know of this already, but there's something that enthusiast Linux users probably know of; tiling window managers. They automatically align your windows to a grid, it's truly brilliant when you make them your own due to configurations you like. For Mac, there's Yabai, which works pretty awesome. I've been using various Linux tiling window managers for a few years now and have also used Yabai for a few months (not on macOS anymore daily, otherwise I'd still be on it), and for me it really enhances my productivity. AMA Not really related to the video but I thought I'd share :)

Hi Ben, I know this may not be the most appropriate video to comment on but I was wondering if you are still using your 18 key keyboard layout? I have tried two different splits over the past 3 months but both of them are giving me left wrist pain that I never experienced using regular row staggered boards, I feel that it is either caused by my pinkie or by reaching to the bottom right key with my index finger which I would usually press with my right index finger instead of left. I feel like your 18 key layout could be really helpful at addressing it. Thanks!

I'm back to a normal keyboard now :) The Voyager by ZSA. However I am finding pinkie use a bit annoying again. But, a two-layer keyboard is really a step too far I think. It is just two error-prone which gets frustrating. I almost wonder if using the number row would avoid pinkie issues more than using the pinkie column though. But that's learning a new layout again and I'm a bit over that!!!
