I have been in the swimming pool business for almost forty years. I have a degree in architecture. This is the best documented and honesty produced production that I have ever seen regarding an owner build. These folks are dealing with local engineering and inspection professionals. The people that chime in and offer all sorts unsolicited negative feedback are simply uneducated or just enjoy creating drama (the sort of people that you DON'T want on a job). The job site is clean and well planned. I have no doubt that the finished home will be a source of pride for years. Congrats, You two ROCK!

Happy Birthday! - Love the videos, humor, lessons, music. Can't wait each day to see the next one. BTW - instead of measuring the rise every time you move the level, you can "stick" a block of wood to one end of your level (say 1" block for 1/4" per foot slope on a 4' level). every time you set the level down and it is level, you have the slope you want. Keep up the hard work... and great work. See you tomorrow.

Funny that in the US you're using glue to connect sewer pipes, but in Europe (Finland) we use silicone lube because the joints have tight o-ring seals on them. Also easier to install since you can take of the parts and re-use them if you mess something up. In commercial buildings we usually use cast iron for noise and fire safety reasons.

O-ring slip fittings suck IMHO because you can't use a drain un-clogger that uses water pressure without risking blowing a connection apart.

You're absolutely right about the trap primers, they'll make an awful smell if they dry out. I alway hated doing under slab plumbing...kind of tough to make changes or repairs in the future. Hey you guys - just wanted to say "Thanks for your channel" and how interesting it is. I'm doing an internal renovation on a cottage in England and often have brain damaging conundrums - like: "I'll just get this wall tiled, oh 2 sq ft of plaster is loose and I'm trying to add travertine tiles at 30kg/sq metre weight - oops, plaster is only rated to 20kg/m2" - a fact I did not know until 2 days ago! Hmmm do we need tile backer board screwed up or something... Or, having been through 2 building inspectors (for what I think you guys call "code", we call "Building Regs") I today find out the council combined their inspection team with several others, my inspector has left and I'm "Oh crap, what if the new guy doesn't like what I've done" and "I have to explain 8 years of work to the new guy (again)". Anyway, all of my problems pale into insignificance compared to the mammoth undertaking you guys are doing - and it's really interesting seeing LiteForm in action - never seen that in the UK. So good luck - I have not watched this video yet, but I wanted to cheat and comment somewhere you might actually spot it :) Rgds: Tim PS - interested in the ground drainage stuff as my land waterlogs and I need to be putting some perforated pipes and gravel around the place.

Building (and manufacturing) are often about hiding your sins. How you get there isn't really as important as the final quality result. Most builders (I suspect) would agree that... most... of what they're doing is okay... harder than it needs to be, but pretty good for novices. They'd save time, money, and improve the result if they hired an experienced builder to help them. They can still do most of the labour, but have an experienced person who know the project... saves a lot of headaches.

I myself would have my soil stack 4" in a normal size residential home, even if you add up the fixture units & a 3" would accommodate. In the future you may do an add on and/or a couple bathroom groups may be added and then your piping is undersized! Always think of the future so you don't have to open walls or cut into your cement floor down the road. ABS is a little noisy so Jesse I would think about insulating your soil stack & perhaps box it in, so every time time the toilet flushes upstairs, your basement office or bedroom stays quiet! Have fun with it guys!

Doing the back fill before the plumbing is okay, just a helpful idea would have been to use your plumbing layout to fill a 2ft wide area with only sand where you would have to dig out. Even the best compacted sand would have taken a quarter of the time to dig out as that stone.
@PhilipPetrunak

What I'd probably do is create some kind of filtration system to recapture the water after it's been used once by the main system, clean it, and then use it for items for a secondary system including the toilets and garden. It would require a two separate water and waste systems, but you also get twice the usage out of the water you buy.

To all the back seaters who cringe, imagine me. I build computer systems for broadcasters that record, edit, and playback video. So watching KZitem all by itself is often cringe worthy. Almost every KZitemr is learning to present video and audio OJT. Trust me when I tell you they often do it wrong, very wrong, but you folks watch it all the same. Sadly it is effecting my business. All to often people are learning bad habits and it's actually working its way into acceptable practices. It's as if people are learning to accept floors a little out of level so now the pros don't bother to level their floors either. Oh, and I built a 1500 square foot, two building house with only the the concrete laid by a sub contractor. So I empathize with these folks. I must have done somethings three times before they were correct. And I'd worked in construction before. These guys are doing OK for total novices.

Not sure if anyone has clarified this but DWV stands for Drain/Waste/Vent. Personally I would have used PVC DWV instead of ABS DWV because you cannot mix the two and it is easier to find PVC than ABS. At least it has been in my experience (39 years of Plumbing). I started out when we were still using Oakum/Lead jointed Cast Iron drain lines. Those were a real pain in the rear, especially if you didn't have a good cutter for them.

You know, the water system I understand - if something goes wrong there, you're back to IBC containers for a while, and it's not a big deal that the house doesn't have water. But moving poo? Anything goes wrong there, and it's coming back up the pipes, into your house. There's no way I screw around with DIY on that. Hire a pro to make sure it's properly vented and inclined instead. Spend some extra money to make sure we never see the "POO IS IN OUR HOUSE (Sewage fail)" video on this channel.

Watching the pipes roll I think I figured out why: ABS has a high thermal expansion in proportion to it's density, and laying in direct sun it is heating up enough to cause the top to expand while the bottom stays the same, and because there must be the slightest slope towards the door, they tip towards the door only to have the cycle repeat.

Black pipe tends to be UV resistant and used above ground for the vent stack etc.. Not sure why you used solvent weld under ground, normally brown push fit. I just dig a channel, pea gravel it, sit the pipe in and lie a 4 foot level on. Just place your fingers under one end, they're usually about an inch thick. I bought a Stabila Site Laser level where you can set the 1 in 40 gradient. Then it doesn't matter where I place the staff and receiver.

Hey guys... been keeping track of your progress and have really enjoyed watching your experience on your home stead. You are right... as a journeyman plumber, this is hard to kinda watch. If I may give you a tip... when grading piping, it is much easier to tape a 1" shim to the end of your 4' level. Then when you put it on the pipe... you make sure the level is level... and that will give you a proper 1/4" grade. You can do the same thing for a 1/8" grade... just tape a 1/2" shim to the end of your 4' level. Good luck and keep up the good work!! - cody from Canada!!
